  1. To be honest, I am new to the Z car world and figuring it out as I go. I see new issues every day. I would like to stay stock where reasonable, but I also want to get this car on the road and enjoy it. Right now, I know I have to get the gas tank taken care of, the suspension completely updated, and figure out some basic tuning of the carbs.
  2. I bought a fuel pressure regulator with a 1-6 lb range, but have not yet put it on.
  3. I've checked the sight glasses. For one of them (the rear) the fuel level is pretty much always sitting in the middle of the sight window. The front one, OTOH, is like 20% up the window. I figure at a minimum I need to figure out how to adjust the float on the front one. I also need to validate that my choke is closing when i think it's closing. Those are the two things I plan to do first, besides repair/restore my fuel tank. Looks like people get good results with the standard POR15 repair kit?
  4. Ok. While I'm here, and speaking of fuel, my 240z has no mechanical fuel pump under the hood. Just an added electric fuel pump back by the tank. The previous owner has a fuel filter just prior to the electric fuel pump, and again under the hood. What am I missing with not having that mechanical fuel pump? When it's cold, I have to turn the key until the electric fuel pump kicks in, and count to 12, then it will usually crank. Once it's warm, it cranks right up, although I know the carbs need some love.

  6. @lonetreesteve - those look sweet. The 1973 240z I just bought came with some 280z rims. I asked the original owner if he still had the original rims and hubcaps. He found the rims but only 3 hubcaps. See pic. I don't have them in hand yet, but they look all black? Hoping I can pick up a 4th hubcap off eBay.

  10. Hi, all. I'm new to the Z community, but apparently jumped in with both feet... My first Z car is in that narrow range of '73 240z that has the original flat top carbs. Bought this from the original owner a couple of weeks ago. My dilemma: As a newbie, do I try to sort out the flat top tuning and ongoing babysitting (as I've been told to expect), or do I opt for: Option 2: ZTherapy carbs conversion to their $1300 "bulletproof" modified round tops. Pricey but probably the best long term option to keep close to original. Option 3: Weber DGVs in the $800+ range. Heard very mixed things. As for me, I'm pretty handy, but never had to tune a carb before. I've watched a YouTube on the flat tops. I'm game if I can get and stay on top of them, but if I truly have to continually tune them long-term then no thanks.
  11. Thanks. You run the flat top carbs, right? I'm about to try to tackle troubleshooting and adjusting them.
  12. My first Z car, and I've got a list of items to check. This car has been driven very infrequently in the last 17 years, at least. I've run it a few 20-40 minute drives after changing oil and air filter and flushing gas tank. It has the flat top carbs. If for sure needs the gas tank dropped and restored. It also, on the last go round, after only about 20 minutes, and a gas station stop, idled rough and some brief dieseling. I'm sure the carbs need adjusting, but also want to replace the spark plugs. I've heard to get the "colder" running plugs. Any recommendations on the best set?
  13. Thanks, everyone. I guess it's nice to know I've got a working tach running under the stock configuration, even if that configuration is a head scratcher. Glad to check it off my list because I've got a lot of other things to get to. I'll hopefully see y'all in other topic threads soon. @7tooZ has pointed me to the Pertronix ignition to consider switching to. I figured most upgrades there would require switching to a signal-based 280z tach; nice to know there are options that will let me keep this stock tach.
  14. With 7tooZ's help I corrected some wiring at the ignition coil and resistor, and now the tach works! Much appreciated! Even my spare tach works. I did notice when the car was running and I swapped one tach for the other that the car died as soon as I unplugged the tach's wiring harness. Is that to be expected? Here is a pic of the current wiring under the hood that got it working.

  16. 79K miles. And less than 6K in the last 17 years so it's sat a lot. It's a pearl white which I don't think is the original Kilimanjaro white. This picture shows the original interior/exterior color scheme that I'd like to eventually get it back to. Thanks for the tip. I guess I'll try to measure the current on the white loop line on the wiring harness to see if the tach is being fed a current?
  17. Hi, all. I just bought a 1973 240z from original owner, and he rarely drove it. That's good and bad. I'm sorting through the bad.... I have lots of questions that I'll post under separate topics. I have a simple question to start... The tachometer isn't working. It's the old current measuring kind. He gave me a used one he bought, but it doesn't work either. He did get the ignition on the column changed at some point in the past. I'm trying to diagnose. Should the car still start if I unplug the tach from the the wiring harness? Thanks!
