a friend and i looked at the wiring today and it looked like the previous owner had wired the stereo up really crappy...there were some open solder joints that could have easily have touched the metal of the car or the dash frame or even each other so that may have caused the shorts. how would i check to see if the voltage regulator is working properly or not?

well this happened 2 times to my car. once i was driving and when while i was parking smoke and flames were coming out of the steering column...some of the wires that connect to the light switch and signal light switch were melted and the switch got fried in the process. now my headlights, tailights, and side marker lights do not work but when i signal the right signal works front and back and the left rear signal works but not the front. i continued to drive the car for a couple weeks after this happened without fixing it yet.bad idea i know. after this i noticed everytime i stepped on the gas while the vent fan was blowing the fan would speed up as well. and when i let off the gas the vent fan would slow down to the normal speed. i was driving on the highway and all of a sudden the vent fan went crazy. it started blowing 10 times the speed as usual. it was pretty scary i thought it was going to blow up. i would say it was around 70psi blowing through the air vents. and then smoke started coming out from my cd deck and then i heard a little pop and the car died and would not start. after i had my car towed about 4 hours later i tried starting my car and it started. i'm just wondering what i should check. i have the center console off so i can get to the wires and the steering column cover off as well right now. a friend is helping with the electrical stuff but i wanted to know if anyone had similar problems or anything.

beandip did you disconnect the mechanical fuel pump and only use the rx-7 one or did you use both?

oh yeah and if i could add the electric fuel pump would i need some sort of fuel pressure regulator as well? last time i brought my car to the mechanic he said i needed a new fuel pump and added an electric fuel pump and disconnected the mechanical fuel pump. the electric fuel pump he added was not made for my z but was some pump he bought from the parts store. he had tried it and it did not work out as it flooded the carbs. what is the normal pressure for the mechanical fuel pump? if i remember correctly the mechanic told me my mechanical pump was only producing around 4psi.

i was going to replace the mechanical fuel pump on my 71 240z and wanted to know if i could use an electric fuel pump from a later 240z. i saw an electric fuel pump and mechanical fuel pump for sale on ebay from a 73 240z. do the later 240z's use both an electric and mechanical fuel pump? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33555&item=2427305531

so i looked at my bmc. i have the larger reservoir closer to the firewall on my 71 z. so this would be the later one right? so originally my car came with the bmc with the larger reservoir farthest from the firewall? what would happen if the previous owner had installed this bmc on my car and they didn't reverse the lines and just installed it backwards?

Forgive my newbie question but what are the advantages of an e31 head over the e88 if any? i have an l26 block/e88 head that is stock except for headers. i do plan on doing some mods to the engine but nothing huge. there is a e31 head that is for sale and i just heard that they are really rare so i was wondering if i should pick this up.

how do you tell if it's reversed? if i take a picture of my bmc and post it up will you be able to tell? if so i'll do that.

what is the size of the stock brake master cylinder on a 1971 240z? I am looking to buy a new bmc and have seen 15/16" and 7/8" bmc for 240Z's. does it matter which one i purchase? is one better than the other?

i'm not sure if this applies to what you are saying but if the wheels turn a little more after the car is in gear while jacked up maybe it's your uni joints. that's what happened with mine and i changed them and then the problem was solved and the clunking gone.
  15. thanks bambikiller
  16. I'm looking into buying the weatherstrip kit from MSA for my 240Z but also want to purchase the door weatherstrips that fit on the body from Nissan as I've heard endless stories about the new weatherstripping from MSA and other aftermarket companies that won't allow the door to close properly even after door and latch adjustments and after waiting long periods of time for the rubber to squish down. Anyone know of where I can get the OEM door weatherstrips or what the part number is so I can go to a Nissan dealership and get them. And just to make sure, is it the weatherstrip that actually goes on the doors or the weatherstrip that goes on the body around the doors that is giving everyone problems?
  17. got the rear brakes adjusted as well. it made an improvement in the braking but not the pedal height. but the brakes are still not that good as they should be.
  18. had the brake booster changed already so i know it's not that.

i step on the accelerator sometimes and then my car barely moves and the exhaust makes a really bad sputtering sound. then all of a sudden it sometimes just kicks in and goes. i recently just had my carbs adjusted and balanced so i'm wondering if it's rust or stuff from my fuel tank that's plugging my carbs up. this problem comes and goes often enough to annoy me. anyone know what i'm talking about?
  20. someone i know has a 70 240Z and he bought a whole weatherstrip kit and he was not able to use the ones for the doors as they wouldn't allow the door to close because they were too big....i don't know what kit he bought but he checked and it was a kit for a 240Z. i want to buy a new weatherstrip kit but now i'm worried about what kit i should buy as i need new door weatherstrip? anyone have these problems? i own a 71 240Z
  21. just had my brakes bled and i do know that there is no brake fluid leaking and the brake pedal goes pretty low to the ground before it starts to work.... a mechanic told me it could be that someone changed the brake pads with out machining the rotors and that that may cause spongy feel in the pedal..... what else could it be? do i need a new brake master cylinder?

i am going to be getting my exhaust system done very soon and i wanted to know what pipe diameter would be better. i have a l26 engine with the 71 SU's in my 71 240Z. it has headers on it and i plan to get the exhaust system done from the headers back. i've heard from many people to go 2.5" but the collector at my headers doesn't even seem that big. it seems 2.25" and the mechanic that is going to do the exhaust system for me says that it's not that good to go 2.5" as i will lose the low end torque. i already know that but don't you gain more in HP with 2.5" over 2.25"? the mechanic also told me it's not good to go bigger than the collector pipe. any suggestions?
  23. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i brought my car to a shop to have my carbs balanced and adjusted properly on my 71 240Z. he said he could also modify the carbs to give a little more power. he couldn't really explain to me that well he said. his english isn't that good but he said something about a 90 degree bend somewhere in the carbs that he would grind to make the flow more smooth and not so harsh a turn. anyone know what he could be talking about? oh and he mentioned something like "venturi"? any help would be appreciated. thanks.
