  1. The original Japanese (Nissan part) rear spoiler had flat surfaces on the rear of the spoiler to which the relocated deck emblems were attached. Aftermarket BRE typ spoilers have no such flat surfaces. I simply took the pins off and 3m taped them to the rear deck just above the spoiler near the original location. Wouldn't know the difference if I didn't tell you!
  2. 1. Remove old insulator material, if it is still there. 2. Paint with POR15. 3. Cut new bicycle inner tube to fit strap as insulator. 4. Glue in place with 3M spray. Done. PS- Be CAREFUL removing the J bolts, near impossible to find anymore!

I would bet ANYTHING that this is not the original HLS30-00094 shell. I would guess that the VIN was swapped to the rust free '71 shell he mentioned. The door data plate has snapped rivet holes on the top (see pic). Also, his answers to the questions posed were vague at best. No pics of the firewall VIN, rear deck, engine number, etc. The air cleaner also shows the later stickers, I believe the '69s and very early '70s had NO stickers. Very nice restoration however, it's a beautiful car. Just not convinced it is the real #94.... FWIW

I stand corrected Chris, you are right. My car is a HLS30U, no evap plumbing. The gas tank also does not have the extra fittings for the evap hoses....
  6. You might want to consider a different battery as well. I changed mine out so that the positive terminal is on the ENGINE side of the bay. Got a slightly shorter battery with the negative terminal on the outboard side, positive inboard. One of the few design problems with the S30. If the battery breaks loose, there is not much room for error. the positive terminal will make contact with the chassis (under the fender) and cause a major short.
  7. Got to be the fusible link on the starter......

You can remove the evap tank. The only vapor hose from the tank that you will need is the hose that goes from the pipe on the rear center of the gas tank tank. Run it up through the deck and attach to the tap on the side of the fuel filler hose. In fact this is how very early 240Zs not sent to North America were built. The two other vapor hose taps on the gas tank (driver side middle and front top above the sending unit) will have to be either welded shut or capped off to avoid gas fumes escaping from the tank. With this you can also eliminate the hard vapor line that runs from the evap tank to the front driver side of the car near the crank breather tube. Much simpler. And it works fine.
  9. The drums on my car are from Rock Auto and work perfectly. And they are aluminum.....

  12. The Z Car Club of Rochester (ZCCR) presents the Third Annual Jonathan Krenzer Memorial All Japanese Car Show on Saturday, July 10, 2010. In addition to the hundreds of great cars of all Japanese marques, we are thrilled to announce that the show will feature a very special display of several historic Datsun/Nissan vehicles: * 1969 Datsun 240Z HLS30-00006, the oldest HLS30 in existence. The first car to leave the factory in October 1969 for North American car show presentation. This is the originally green car that a model infamously sat on and dented, resulting in it being removed from the car show circuit. It was then given to Bob Sharp for racing development. The car was successfully campaigned as BSR #33 with Sharp driving and later as BSR #38 with Jim Fitzgerald at the wheel. It is now owned by Dr. Allan Robbins whose Sharpsite Motorsports has restored the car to its original racing trim. * 1969 Datsun 240Z HLS30-00008. Also in the group of the first Z cars sent to America in October 1969. This car was the first to be used for automotive press reviews and is believed to be the cover car of the January 1970 issue of Road & Track magazine. Later converted into a SCCA race car, the first Z to complete the 24 hours of Daytona. Today it is owned by Dr. Tom Bork and is still raced in vintage events. * 1969 Datsun 240Z HLS30-00013, the first North American Z made available to the public for sale. Long considered the "missing link" to Z car history, the car was recently discovered in Connecticut after being in storage for over 30 years. The car had been lovingly preserved by its owner Rick Morgan since 1976. The recent cover story of Nissan Sport magazine. * 1976 Datsun 620 Salt Flats truck. The new Land Speed Record holder at the East Coast Timing Association Nationals. Set a new record in the F Class of 123.35 mph, shattering the old record of 119 mph. The Datsun will attempt this September to also set new world records in the E and G classes, thus becoming the first truck to hold records in three different classes. The truck was built/driven by Barry Brown and Jeff Benson of Riter Restorations in East Rochester NY. Engine built by Vinny Bedini of Bedini Motorsports. Both Brown and Bedini had formerly built some of the Bob Sharp Racing cars. * Custom 1970 Datsun 510 powered by the original Dodge Challenger drivetrain from Brock Yates' infamous first Cannonball Run car. A custom show car winner many times over. We are proud to have this bit of Nissan/Datsun history on display together for possibly the only time ever. Contact Brian Rolfe at www.seatzmfg.com I installed his complete carpet kit on my '70 240Z and it is fantastic. It replaces all of the original quilted vinyl on the interior including the transmission tunnel and shock towers. Molded to fit in two sections. Was easy to install! Available in either cut pile or original loop. Interior is quieter too!

    Nice in black!
  17. 20W50 is waaaaaay to heavy. 10W30 should be your all around oil.
  18. Thanks for the info guys. I suspected that because my '70 doesn't have the pockets in the floor for the retractor, that a surface mount would interfere with the seat. I've been searching on the aftermarket, and there appears to be a couple of good options that have a much smaller retractor that I think would fit on the floor without any interference problems. I believe this is the way that the MSA kit fits, but is necessary to drill a second mounting hole (which I do not want to do!). The search continues.... for now.
  19. I've got a NOS still-in-the box set. Just wondering if it able to be done.
  20. How difficult is it to put a set of retractable seatbelts from a 1977 280Z into a series one 240Z? Are the mount points the same? I realize that the retractors will take up space, but I do not want to drill any new holes for mounting. Have any of you done this before? Thanks in advance.
  21. Got to cut it out and weld in the replacement panel. If done correctly, no one will be able to tell. Better check the rest of the car (doglegs, rockers, doors, floors) AGAIN.
  22. zcar70 replied to TorqueAutoMotiv's post in a topic in Help Me !!
It appears to be a 1977 or 78 280z. The gas tank should have a drain plug on the bottom center. The engines are pretty much bulletproof as long as they stay properly oiled. Check the fluids, clean the fuel system (check the injectors). Make sure all electrical connections are clean and tight, especially to the ECU in the driver's side kick panel. Also check the brake and clutch masters, they have a tendency to gum up in storage. Good luck!
  23. Pesonally, I thought they were butt-ugly. Didn't REALLY offer any additional protection to the car and took away some of the streamline look. And I NEVER liked the way the front one attached THROUGH the rubber on the bumperettes! AND if you have nice 240 bumpers now, you would be crazy to drill into them! My 2 cents.....

Not over kill at all. When I restored my 240 I did the entire inside tub with POR, then put sound insulation over the top. I also did the entire underside from the firewall back. Got into every nook and cranny. The POR dried fast and hard, doesn't leave brush marks, looks great. I don't think I will have to worry about the metal for the rest of my lifetime!
  25. Still trying to pass some time this winter, here is a interesting topic of discussion for you all: If you had an unlimited budget, and limiting this strictly to Z-Cars (1970-2010), what models would you have in YOUR Dream Garage? Me: 1. 1970 (1969 build sub-500 VIN) series one 240Z 2. 1978 280Z Black Pearl Edition 5 speed 3. 1980 280ZX 10th Anniversary Edition in Black/Red 4. 1988 300ZX Turbo Shiro Edition 5. 1995 300ZX TT Stillen Edition 6. 2005 350Z Nismo 7. 2010 370Z Roadster in Black Cherry How about you?
