  1. I don't think they ever made a Hitachi TM-1081 with a left-hand side volume knob? At least I've never seen one. And interesting theory about reproduction vs. original. It's definitely a strong one. One person I talked to reminded me that they threw parts at the early cars and couldn't keep up early on — often outsourcing production to multiple suppliers (not sure if that is 100% accurate or not) — so it could just be that one factory made it one way, and another made it another.
  2. Hi all! I'm spending most of March in Japan, and as I'm slowly restoring my 240z, figured there may well be some treasure troves of parts hidden away somewhere I can get to. Either that or a friendly enthusiast who might be good to meet! If you know of anywhere or anyone, I'd love recommendations or introductions.
  3. No sooner had I sent the above, did I notice this product from the same seller. Look like the vent duct (exterior) and the plenum (interior).
  4. Oh! Super interesting... my guess is that the product you linked would be instead of the vent duct (last link I posted from Zeddsaver)? Or in addition to?
  5. Hi everyone. I had some expected issues with the rear hatch vents coming loose on my 10/70 240z, so I was looking into replacing them. I've been researching which components would be stock, and could use some pointers as I can't find much in FSM and other documentation. Am I correct in that I will need all of the below? As far as I can tell, there are four pieces (a few associated questions below): The deck lid grille (hatch vents) themselves. I have these. Question: These are now plastic, but were these ever metal on the original cars? The cylindrical receiving clips for the deck lid grille. I have these. These are pretty standard. They come included with many sales online (specifically with TheZStore, where I got mine) The rectangular retainer clips into which the barrel clips are inserted. I have the originals but I want to replace them with new ones. The photo in this link shows them clipped onto the vent duct (see #4 below), but the vent duct is not included in this price. A vent duct (or plastic receiving cowl) that somehow seems to fit in the vent space. Question: Is this stock? Do I need this? I want to be as original as possible. I don't see it listed on any site other than Zeddsaver, and this wasn't present in my car when I removed my deck lid grilles. The ones here are 3D printed and $239.99— a hefty price. Thanks so much for any help or knowledge you might have! Trying to wrap my head around this.
  6. I'll do you one better: I have some spray adhesive I can use on the paper and stick it to the foam.
  7. Ah this is exactly what I needed. Thanks so much @jfa.series1 and @SteveJ for the assist. If you have a folder of these scans/plans, I'd happily send some $$$ for access!
  8. Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out a good method or replacement part for the rubber seal inside of the license plate assembly on my early 240z. I recently opened the assembly to replace a bulb and noticed that the rubber seal/gasket (seemingly for waterproofing) was deteriorating and falling apart. I'm wondering what you'd recommend to replace the rubber gasket and if there are any aftermarket parts available. I'm assuming Nissan doesn't have this available anymore. Any tips or information would be much appreciated! Thanks so much.
  9. Cheers for the quick reply. I'd spent a while searching, but could only find expensive repackaging of the FSM PDFs. For some reason, emanualonline doesn't seem to show me the Haynes book... just alternative service manuals. I'm thinking that perhaps I need to pay to scan them both myself. A little surprised that no digital versions exist! Thanks so much for the pointers.
  10. Hi all, I own both the classic Haynes manual and Wick Humble's How To Restore Your Z-Car in print form, but I'm trying to find PDFs for purchase or download (if your copyright views of already-owned material swing that way). Does anyone know where I could find them? I'd love them in digital form to aid in access when in and around the shop or away from home. Plus them being easily searchable on my computer/iPad would be a productivity boon for me. Any leads are welcome! Please note I do already own both of these in various versions, so I'm not looking to do anything illegal here. Cheers, N.
  11. Resurrecting this just to say I have HLS30 12365, built 10/70, also in 920 Safari Gold. Very close to this car. It has L24-016455 under the hood.
  12. Hi all, Does anyone have any insight on the different fonts used on the Series 1 AM radio faceplate for the numbers? I can see two styles: A more rounded sans serif font, as seen here, here and here (on the $310k BaT sale) A stenciled, almost "military" style block font, as seen here and here I'm unsure if it's factory differences, a different model (I've seen references of a Hitachi TM-1081 with different Z and B codes), or simply restoration work. Any information would be appreciated as I'm trying to acquire an original, correct radio for my 10/71 Series 1. Attaching images here also incase the links go dead in the future.
  13. Hi there, Looking to add a trustworthy and expert detailer to the rolodex. I don't have much experience here, and worried about going to a normal detailer with a vintage car. Any pointers are welcome! Thanks, all.

Dropping in to add another data point for the Series 1 (10/70 build date, HLS3012365) I purchased in October 2023. This seems to be the second style of hood mentioned in this thread (from what I can tell) and it looks as if it is period-correct and original with the build date mentioned. 17. Thanks for the tips... much appreciated. I'm going to dive in and give it some love. There's a shop in Pasadena (Miller's Sports and Imports) owned by a guy called Skip that works only on Datsuns. Planning to swing by there next week.
  18. Thanks all so much. Is a lead supplement recommended for fuel? Or is that dependent on engine work/rebuilds over the years?
  19. Hi all... looking for a few basic tips and watch outs for general maintenance and products to use on my '71 240Z. Namely: Oil (Original engine, I've seen mention of a few different options) Cleaning products/wax/microfibers etc (old paint) General liquids (radiator etc, anything to watch out for?) Anything else you may think of This is my first Z and I know a lot of the information has been amassed over the last 20-30 years on forums and websites, so just want to make sure I'm as up-to-date as I can be.
  20. Hi all, I flirted with it for a long time... and finally pulled the trigger from a recent BaT auction: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-datsun-240z-274/ I'm still a newbie, but excited to dive in and meet some of you in the future. And more than happy to be more than a lurker! It'll be taken on limited drives, but do want to get it out and enjoy it in Southern California. That being said, I am excited to work on restoring and updating as much as possible and keep it stock. Some information pasted from the listing: Early series 1 car in Safari Gold. California blue license plates. Matching engine numbers. Matching numbers on shock tower plate, door plate, dash vin, and firewall vin. Original “D” hubcaps. Correct early seats with tilt knobs. Correct early steering wheel w/o spoke holes. Correct speedometer starting at 20 MPH. Correct oil pressure gauge to 140 PSI. Tool bins behind the seat, not in rear hatch floor. Correct metal cooling fan. 2400 script valve cover. Correct E31 head. Early 4 screw SU carbs. Early air cleaner w/o winter – summer flap. Engine splash pan guard present. With that being said, I have a grasp on some basic things to immediately work on (based both on the photos but also the seller's comments), but would welcome any of your expertise and tips on things to focus on, take care of, look to fix etc. Especially things on early Zs that should be looked at. Would also love any thoughts on any glaring pieces that don't look stock that I can get changed out. Work done by previous owner (copy/pasted): re-trimming the interior fuel system service replacing the dashboard cap replacing the carpets machining the cylinder head rebuilding the brake booster replacing the head gasket replacing the ignition wires replacing the spark plugs replacing the thermostat replacing the intake manifold gaskets replacing the tie rod ends replacing the tires replacing the brake components replacing the steering rack boots replacing the brake master cylinder replacing the front brake calipers and pads replacing the rear wheel cylinders and shoes What I have right now. Obviously, some of these are just cosmetic, but listing what comes to mind: Battery tray rust remediation General rust remediation Are there any standouts? Rubber seals (misc.) Strut bushing replacements Assess jack point damages Check the glasspack-style muffler that was installed under prior ownership Splash pan with holes (from later model year) Likely not a good idea to go back to one with no holes? Engine hoses (replace with original styles?) I read that Philips-head clamps are newer adds OEM (or similar) radio to make drives a little more enjoyable This also depends if the car came without an AM radio originally. If so, I may keep it without Check if the powered antenna works Check if the clock works Not sure it does based on the auction driving video and photos Check gauges Not sure they do based on the listing Check map light Wheel and hub cap restoration? Hub caps look dark... not sure if the chrome has worn or there was a style like this? Oil/restore (steering wheel) wood Gear shift knob replace to stock Shift boot replace (check if original style) Thanks to @SacCyclone for selling and thanks in advance to all of you for the forum knowledge I'll be searching through and your expertise! Excited to get going.
  21. Just to confirm the logic (sorry for basic questions): This originally had an L24 engine, but was swapped to an L28 later in life. I'm best served checking the engine block number (which will be behind the A/C drier as this car has it fitted) and make sure that it is, indeed, an L28 as the 42xxx engine block number will align? One thing I'm confused about... as far as I can tell if the engine was swapped to an L28, wouldn't the engine number be much different to what the sheet (linked above) shows, as the L28 wasn't offered at the time the L24s were manufactured? The 42xxx would likely be the number on the original L24, but it wouldn't be the same on the L28?
  22. Thanks for the tips, folks! Much appreciated. I feel very much like a newbie going into the viewing, but will take it slow and have a look around. - Rust spots (battery tray, hatch lip, behind front fender, etc) - Original engine (present or not— I don't think it is) - Ask about damage (both sides front floor, left side fender discoloration and impact) I am getting a large feeling that if this isn't with the original engine, $25k feels quite high given a few of the other considerations. I know we're in a wild market, but would that be a fair assumption? Thanks to all again.
  23. Would love some folks thoughts on this.. I don't know much about the "1.5", but it's local to me, California-kept and I've been wanting a '71 for a while. It's been a while since I looked seriously, so my Z knowledge is fading a bit... but any obvious red flags would be appreciated! https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/d/la-crescenta-1971-datsun-240z-series-15/7506539433.html
  24. Thanks for that backstory... I actually didn't know. I'm early in my journey of first recreational car purchase! I suspect this guy doesn't know much about the car or came into it in a way he isn't disclosing.
  25. I saw September '71 on the door jam plate. Does the year of manufacture run a year in advance of the model year?
