I road race against a Miata in ITS. The Miata handles a little better but the Z is faster/quicker. The top-3 finishers a couple weeks ago were: 1. 240Z 2. 300ZX 3. Miata Chuck -

Thanks! It's an Auto-Twirler rotisserie with mounts for a Mopar. I drilled an extra hole in the front mount and made an adapter for the rear and bolted it up! I've done a few 240Z floors and they're pretty easy compared to this. The 280Z floors don't have all the bends of the originals so there's more manipulation. It was a lot of work to get those in. Anyway, I think they turned out pretty nice for a race car. Chuck

Yeah, that section of welding the new frame to the old frame under the car is tricky. You can make it a little less upsidedown by jacking up just one side of the car. The 240Z floors go in MUCH easier than 280Z floors. I installed 280Z floors/frames in my race car over the winter and it was tough even with a helper and having the car on a rotisserie! Chuck

I agree with all of that but to clarify the floors supplied by ZF are actually longer than the original floors. You can use the extra metal to replace any rusty metal at the bottom of the firewall. You don't have to weld on your back. After the floors are tacked in place you can hold the frame rails in place with a floor jack. Get under the car and drill a small hole at the corner of each end of the frame rail. Use a Sharpie to draw a straight lines connecting the holes to mark off the edges of the new frame rail. Remove the new frame rail. Drill 3/8" holes inside those lines so you can plug weld down onto the new rails. Don't remove the seat rails unless you have to. They will help to prevent any twisting or distortion. Chuck

Check everywhere for a vacuum leak and make sure that all of your ground connections are good. You can connect a timing light and make sure that it's still firing at the higher RPMs just to rule that out. Chuck

I'm pretty sure the 240Z has two - 1 at the coil and 1 at the distributor. My 75 280Z has just the one at the coil. It wouldn't hurt to replace them with new ones. Chuck

I used to be a reseller of the Zedd Findings floors and frames. They're very close replicas of the originals. The first item in the link below is for the floors and supports (aka frame rails) for $299. http://datsunzparts.com/floorandrails.htm DO NOT USE SHOWCAR BODYPARTS!!! 99% of the stories I've heard about them have been bad. They're known for taking months or years to deliver parts and sometimes never deliver at all. Chuck

I've installed a few Zedd Findings floors and frames. I think from start to finish it takes about 40 hours. That includes removing the interior and finishing with seam sealer and paint. I just did this on my race car and it's really not a bad job. You should consider doing it yourself. Keep in mind that these projects take a lot more time than you think. Chuck

It shouldn't be dented. You can use a big adjustable wrench to bend it straight. It might be easier to fix it with it bolted in the car. You might want to finish it off with a hammer and dolly. Chuck

Try some new plugs, 8mm wires, performance coil (remove the ballast resistor), run premium fuel, adjust the timing and adjust the valves. After that you can try a K&N type air filter, header and 2.5" exhaust. And remember that reducing weight is like adding horsepower. The '78 Z has some pretty big bumpers... Chuck

I'd cut out the rust on the existing fender, make a little patch or two and butt weld it/them. Keep as much of the original fender as possible. Like ZCurves said, make sure you protect the back side well! Chuck

I just spoke to Ed who runs the show. He said that hotels in Carlisle are starting to sell out already. If you can't get a place in Carlisle then I'd try somewhere 15-20 minutes East of Carlisle since you're coming from that direction. Please buy lots of parts. I have too much! Chuck
