Timing off? New ignition..
though i never had a petronix i have heard nothing about good from them. i had a crane unit and it continually pissed me off on a daily basis. that is when i put a 280ZX distributor in my 240 that i had. it as he says is a pain to get it set just right and it would always seem to go out on me. once i had the datsunt 280ZX unit i never had a problem again. lots of people told me that i should have went with the petronix unit but the crane was in the car to begin with. i know you dont want to make your wifey unhappy but you would be bettter off taking that out and putting the datusn unit back in.

18" wheels on the s30 240z?
for what you would pay for just the wheels and tires for the car i would be able to get my current wheels and the best set of tires i could buy and still have money left over to do a few more mods it just isnt worth it for cost, time and the lot.

a little story about two hondas
ive seen them also, with nice engines and real upgrades to make the car actaully perform. but these two were just show boat cars with all show no go and loud almost motorcycle sounding exhaust. it was just funny to see tow cars that thought they were fast

a little story about two hondas
im just taking a nice little ride around town today because it was such a nice day i thought i would enjoy it. washed and waxed the car, and went down the road enjoying the sun and good weather. anyway as im ending my little trip around town what do i see but two hondas behind me talking as there going down the street no big deal to me. after about two lightst the two of them come around me and line up at the following red light. one is about a 92 + civic the others is a crx model. both have the fart cans poping out of the back and sound like a swarm of angry bees revving at the light. i sit and think to myself this ought to be fun to watch. well at this time before the light turns green a ford explorer pulls up behind the two in the lane next to me. bam!!, the light turns green and they two of them are off! seeing htem fly as they would think they are done the road racing each other making a little chirp between gears like they own the world. me, i just move along and watch them go. well heres the funniest part of the whole race, as the two are blazing down the road,(hehe), i dont think that they noticed the ford explorer behind them trying to pass, not even trying to go fast. . it was the funniest thing as the ford was seeming to wait for them to get done so he could get down the road. its funny to watch little civics and crx's race down the road and others are trying to go around there (street racers) oh well had to share. one a good note i saw a 75-78 280Z today in my town of uniontown, pa!! he must have been a lover of Z's as he waved an beeped the horn coming toward me.

Smoking!!!!!!!!!
i would have to say that its seals, especially with the smoke if it is blue coming out of the exhaust.

zx limted slip?
www.hybridZ.org what you need if your in the US hehe, is 87-89 tubo 300ZX differential, if you had an R200 originally then you woldnt need the mustache bar and the like with that swap, 280ZXT CV shafts are best and will work with the 240Z as well. you do want to keep the finned pan though some take it off but i wouldnt want to lose the extra fluid that comes with the LSD from the turbo cars. nissan made it that way for a reason. you can buy a bar that will allow the finned cover to be used and it looks great. search and ye shall find.

need 0 to 30 better
from what ive read and learned it is a really strange subject. some say that with the n/a cars that you do need backpressure and some say not. some say you will burn out your valves without any back pressure. well that i do know is a myth. ive never run a chambered (like the turbo style muffler) exhaust. never had any problems with valves and the like on an n/a engine. i will say this though going with an open exhaust does cost you a little in the bottom end but lets you go faster in the top end. its a give and take with whatever you decide to use. turbos though do use the exhaust escape and you want that out of the car asap. its always fun and talking and discussing things like this. ive heard a lot about the n/a applications and from a lot of people. what i have never seen from anyone is any difference via dyno sheets that state and or prove that an open exhaust or a chambered exhaust is any better or worse then the other. its what you like and decide and feel best with that matters in the end most of all.

new exhaust system
i once was going to do a stainless steel mandrel bent exhaust for my 240Z i had. i priced all parts from Jc Whitney. the cost was a measily if i recall right somewhere between 140 and 170. not to bad huh. if you go to www.jcwhitney.com you can find mandrel bends that you could use for your intake. you might also want to make your own exhaust as well just have it put together at a muffler shop. good luck with whatever you decide

N36 intake manifold
but it will not give you any noticeable appreciation in power unless your more the basically modified. it isnt a bolt and gain power if you get my drift.

need 0 to 30 better
you dont want to go above 3.70 unless you have taller gears in the transmission. what happens is you will get a better take off, but what you lose is the power that the turbo will produce by not being able to say in gear long enough to use that boost therefore losing power. nissan was very right in there thinking and keeping the ratio at 3.54

1971 Datsun 240Z Series One 4 speed pictures
umm since its for sale whats the asking price?

need 0 to 30 better
with just a 3 inch exhuast ill post when i get it from my friend jeffp, what the dyno says on a stock turbo with a 3 inch exhuast. the gained power was 20 hp and 18ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels. that shows you how restrictive the stock system is. he has dyno sheets that i can post to prove it. jeff mentioned some turbos need the restriction, sorry jeff but that is totally wrong. the less restrictive the exhaust is on a turbo motor the better for power. you want as little restriction as possible.

springs?
and doing it so often to other cars i find that when i do work on a z that i own its childs play compared to most of the newer cars and dont take it or take it for granted that to some it may be more of a chore:ermm: :cross-eye

the search is over
the reason that the red car is the donor car is because that will be the one with the good body and no rot. the other car has some rot, and its not feasible(sp?) to fix when i can have this one for much less. the red car will be getting a 3.1 stroker from the 73 that im buying in st louis. two cars = one nice looking and mean little machine. the 73 also has the manual and this 71 has an automatic:(

springs?
the job is extremely easy and straight forward. you would want to put a bit of oil down the cylinder of the strut to make it easier for the next time you need to change them. the only hard part might be getting the large gland nut off of the strut tube.:tapemouth
