Pictures of Center Consoles?
Well if that is the case then my brand new 78 ( back in Dec 77) had a console from an earlier model..who knows..the one on the right is like what I have so that would be out of a 77 or 78 unless Datsun pulled a fast one , who knows.

This is why I speed!
Exactly why I got my first Z . It was a gift Christmas and college graduation, my parents, my dad ask one last time about a Corvette , put him in both on a winding road, that ended all discussions about why I wanted the Z vs the Vette. Had that one from Dec 77 to July of 93 , sold it like a idiot, waited till I could find one in good enough condition to make me happy , did so in 2000 and have that one now, the first one was a 78 this one is a 77. You dont own a Z for straight line driving for sure.

Tire and Wheel Combo
Run a 205 / 50 / 15 on my Z without any probs at all, stock springs. May however go to a 16 in rim and change the springs to eliminate the large gap between the top of the qtrs / fdrs and the top of the tire. Depends on what my son does to his 99 Mits Eclipse , he may give me his 16 in , OZ Formula 1 wheels.

question regarding backfiring
Ah man thats one of the reasons for driving a sports car, enjoy the sound as well as the looks you get from others wondering whats under the hood. Nothing beats the down shifting sound that a Z can produce when you have a set up to enhance it.

oil change
Like I said , Im going back to the dealer filter, they also recommend 10W30 non synthetic oil in a 77 with the stock engine. This car has never been run with synthetic oil in it , it does not burn nor use any oil so Im not going to change anything right now , I also cked on the valve cover gasket from the dealer , thought I might change that due to the mileage 82,000 ( original miles) even though there isnt a prob with the one currently on it I just am thinking why not , its pretty simple to do so might as well put a new one on before the original one begins to leak, on the other hand , no leak why mess with it at this time, but the filter will be the OEM one for sure.

oil change
Called the dealer today , they hve the OEM , $ 7.00. Think Im gonna go with that from now on, makes more sence to me to use the OEM the more that I have thought about this. Funny as important as the oil is , I had really given more thought to it due to the frequency of changing the oil than to the filter, I grew up with Fram and had pretty much used it most of the time over the years, except when allowing one of the Oil change places to change the oil ( very infrequently) on my other cars. But the more I am thinking of this , Im gonna go back to the OEM filter.

Nice Orange Z - engine bay
This is one of the best looking engine bays I have seen ever, including ones on the showroom floor...fantastic looking engine as well as valve cover etc...great job on the restoration as well as additions.

Your opinion on this front air dam (sweet)
That one is way too small for the look I am wanting , to me it looks like at least 1/2 the air dam has been chopped off..what I orgininally had on my first Z was more of a Lemans look, the dam was approx 2 inches off of the roadway.. Thanks for the reply however 77 Z

Your opinion on this front air dam (sweet)
Guess I am in the minority on this one...it hides the front of the tires well which is a great way not to have to flare the fender. Personally on this particular Z with the paint job on the car I like it...but I wonder what it would also look like with side skirts added as well as the rear bumper off and the rear rolled..the tires are 225-50-15...and hidden very well from the front...I am really considering this particular air dam for my 77 as well.. 77 Z

Outside air temp affecting running, what gives
Dont know what happened to the text...anyway...the higher the outside temp becomes the smoother my engine runs, the better the car runs. Awhile back I was looking at as well as touching the inside of the air flow meter, could I have possibly by touching the arrow like piece , reset the flow rate or done something that would have an effect on the engine so that what is going on now could have been the result of slightly moving the arrow... As the temp goes up throughout the day the car just gets stronger and stronger, smoother and smoother..while the engine temp remains constant...

Outside air temp affecting running, what gives
The hotter the day gets the better my 77 Z runs, the engine temp does not rise according to the temp gauge, but when the outside temp is in the upper 80's to the mid to upper 90's the car just gets better and better , the engine smoother and smoother..can someone tell me why this is happening.. Again the overall engine temp is great , could it be a air fuel mix that as the air becomes hotter it allows for the engine to run smoother or what... Could I have possible when looking at the inside of the air flow meter ( a lttle more than looking) accidently without knowing it made a change that would make for someting like this to happen) ... 77 Z

Octane question
Thanks to all that have responded to my question...and it has nothing to do with not trusting you guys especially considering some who have given an answer to my question...I BELIEVE YOU ALL.......seriously at one point I was running 87 and for some reason maybe reading something in the manual I switched to the higher octane..it all makes perfectly good sense to me as you guys have explained it...and again I believe you as too many of you really know what you are doing with these cars as far as the engines...Im good on about everything else but that area and am trying to become at least better than avg with fuel injection....thanks for all the scientific explanations as well. Thanks again to all and believe me I do believe you guys... 77 Z

Octane question
The only other question I have is that in the owners manual it states.......... Your Datsun (non California model) is designed to operate on either unleaded or low - lead gasoline with a research octane rating of at least 91. Incorrect fuel whose octane rating is too low will result in knocking , after run or overheating. So ....now what ..most of you are telling me that you run 87 and the manual says 91...not that I think you guys dont know what you are talking about but whats the deal.... As I said the compression ratio is 8.3 to 1 which is now probably lower due to the mileage on the original engine..which is 83,000 miles... OK ...what gives... Thanks for the patients guys 77 Z

Octane question
In the original owners manual for the Datsun 280Z 1977 Owners manual model S30 it indicates the following Compression ratio: 8.3 Engine model and design: L28, 6cyl inline OHC Eletronic Fuel Injection Displacement: 168.0

Octane question
One more thing..is the compression ratio listed in the owners manual. If not then how will I determine what it is. 77 Z

Octane question
Around here (Columbia SC ) the difference is 2.00 per tank full give or take a few cents in using 87 vs 93 octane. This car seems to do fine on 89 and as mentioned when the car was new 87 was not around or if so it was not all that prevelent, so I would imagine that what was regular fuel at that time was something in order of what is now 89 octane. But now you are looking at a difference of 1.00 give or take per tank full...think I will just stay with the 93 and not worry about a 100-150.00 per year difference...cheaper than a new engine.... Thanks for the information 77 Z
