distributor 240z
To all concerned I got the 240z running again. I spring had came off inside the distributor. The spring is connected to the weights. That is why I had play in the cam that opens and closes the mechanical points. Cam was in 180 degrees out that why I couldn't start and was backfiring. I re-gapped the points and set timming.

distributor 240z
I'm running a 72 240z L24 engine stock distributor with single mechanical points. 17 BTDC is manual setting for no smog stuff. 10 deg. BTDC @650 RPM is with emissions control. I guess I will take out the points and the cover over the weights looks like there is only 2 ways to put the dist. cam back in. I must be 180 deg out. Thanks for your reply maybe I'll get a chance to work on it tomorrow. I'll let you know how i'd made out . Oh by the way I forgot to pull off the vacuum advance and plug it when i set the timing so I'll reset it when I get the car running again. Just goes to show ya If it ain't broke don't fix it.

distributor 240z
Oh No !! I adjusted valves then set timing . I noticed to get 17deg. BTDC my distributor was turned almost all the way to the desination R . I assumed the adjustment from timming marks on crank shaft would have put me some where in the middle of distributor adjustment. I noticed I had play on my distubutor cam and it would rotate with out alot of force applied to it. I wondered if the play affected my mechanical points opening and closing. Well I loosened the srcew to the cam in the distributor and shaft pulled up but now I don't think its back in the right position. I'm back firing and not able to start car How do i get the distributor cam back in the right position.

stuttering......
How do your plugs look . I also start stutering at 4k but just got my stock engine with headers running after setting 18 yrs. My carbs were cleaned and are set at about under 1 turn. I do have some valve tap so going to readjust the valves. Then see if I can run the carbs a little richer. some of my plugs are clean #1 and #2 look good #3 has more carbon #4 is clean but wet. #5 and #6 are fine. Maybe try to run yours a little leaner.

It's Alive!!!
I can relate I just got my 72 240z running and drinking gas from it's own tank. Tommorrow I free up the right rear brake and go for a spin. THis 240z went into the garage in 1983 it was last registered then. 1985 was the last time it ran. cranked it over by hand last summer to free it up and tryed starting it. I had to pull off the su carbs and go over them to get it running
