Great idea! Many thanks. (And thanks for the caution about acids.)

I'm in the process of welding in new front and rear fender panels on my '72 240Z. There are also a number of very small rust spots around the rear wheel arches, and along the front of the hood. They range in size from about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in diameter. Is it possible to simply clean them as best I can, perhaps apply phosphoric acid (like Ortho) and spot weld some new metal on top, and have a repair that won't bubble through in a few years? The alternative is to cut each or them out and weld in a small patch. Anyone have any experience along these lines? Many thanks. Bob

KMack, Many thanks for the advice. I think, since I have at least four patches to make, that I might use this as an opportunity to try several methods to see which one works best for me.

I'm about to replace cockers and parts of front and rear fenders. Before I cut out the old metal, I'd appreciate some advice. 1) Should I just cut out the bad sections and attempt to cut the edges of the replacement panels to perfectly match the sut on the car (which seems hard to get right), or, 2) Should I try to clamp the replacement panel to the car and cut through it and the car at the same time. This seems like it would result in a perfect match. Is there a coimmonly accepted "best"way? Many thanks!
