  1. I have installed three of these in various Z cars. Two of them came with "microscopic" pin hole leaks in the weld. I used a rat tail file to make a groove over the pinholes and put a dab of JB Weld half the size of a pea. All of them are working great. I suggest doing a pressure test BEFORE installing it. Unless you want to do it the hard way later. On the third rad, I used the rubber caps that came with the radiator, clamped on. Then I stuck a ball inflation needle through the rubber cap, and pumped it to about 15psi. I used a bike pump with a gauge and let it sit for a day to observe the pressure. Of course the only one I tested, the third one, didn't leak.
  2. Trust me. I am sure Jay knows all about Z cars. If he doesn't have one yet, he is probably just shopping for the right one.
  3. Awesome Steve! I'll pick it up from there. I also needed the two-wire door jamb switch. Perfect.
  4. I wouldn't mind having the original fusible link to replace the decimated one in my 72, if anyone has a source?
  5. This alternator was "rebuilt" by "who knows shop" in the city. I put in my spare alternator, checked the systems, built a 40Amp fuse link to replace the blown factory link, and she fired right up. All systems go! Now THAT'S why you should never eliminate, or skip fuses, when you work on, or modify your car. The old alternator is in my growing scrap pile, and I will probably open it up this week to report. I think Hagerty Insurance will cover my flatbed fee.
  6. Pulled the +12 from the alternator and the dead short went away. The alternator is shorted internally. I have another one. I need to replace the fuse link and make sure that nothing else got fried in the process.
  7. 1972 240Z pretty much stock other than Webers, and a bigger fuel pump. So my son and I were driving home tonight from a car show. The car was missing a tad, then my headlights went dim, then they came back, then dim. My fog lights, on their own circuit with relays, remained bright, thankfully. Then BAM total darkness, no ignition, instant rolling chassis in the dark. I managed to feel my way off the main road with momentum, and turn right about 20 feet into a dark side road. The smell of burnt electrical. With my phone's light, I found that the main fusible link from the starter lug to the main harness was melted. With the ignition off, lights off, all things off in the car, I tried to touch the burnt ends of the f-link together, and got a huge spark. Enough was enough, I had a flatbed take us home. Tomorrow I will diagnose. Any guesses? The car has a 2 year old re-fresh, and all the harnesses were out inspected and cleaned. It has been trouble free. My first guess is that the alternator shorted internally or the starter/solenoid shorted. I will use my meter to look for continuity to ground tomorrow. Any suggestions or thoughts that could help me pinpoint the short?
  8. Welcome to the layed-off engineer's club! Sorry to hear you have become a member :-( Age is definitely a barrier.
  9. I cheap-ed out and just painted my stock horns red. Why?? Because it was the nearest rattle can, since I just sprayed the swaybars. ;-) With the front plate, you can hardly even see the horns anymore anyhow. Leave them red. http://dcer.smugmug.com/Other/Future-Z/IMG3119/876558995_Mwo8d-XL.jpg
  10. I would have Z source send you a new trans real quick, while you pull this one out. Send it right back, don't open it.
  11. Great Z car you picked up. My favorite color. My 72 is also an ex-auto car. I had no idea it had been converted until I found some extra wires that seemed to lead from the firewall, down into the trans tunnel. After much head scratching, I remembered that the PO had mentioned that it was originally auto. I can't wait to see what you do with it, but it's already beautiful. Best of luck with it.
  12. Unfortunately, the Z has to stay home. The family is coming with me to visit an old school friend, and then off to the beaches for a few. I thought it was "Boo-Wee"
  13. Watch it now! I'm a New Yorka', and I am coming down to MD in a few days. Bowie to be exact.
  14. Hey, first day with the new camera. I was flying. Barf bag in the seat pocket.
  15. Thanks all. The yellow lights are fairly common in europe. You also see it on many endurance GT cars. I wanted a more vintage euro look, and a unique Z look. I hadn't seen any Z's with yellow lights. They are just yellow tinted stone-guard adhesives.
  16. Original Video FIXED! Youtube generic music included. Be sure to watch in 1080p resolution if you can handle it.
  17. It's just a walk around video. L-Music is another video. Yes, the Gopro audio is pretty crappy. An external microphone is mandatory for automotive duty for sure. If you want to hear it run, here is the video.
  18. My wife gave me the Hero2 HD camera for our anniversary. I went out to do a walk around of the 240Z, and produced this little video. Great camera. I can't wait to make some driving videos!
  19. Very clean shop builds a very clean car! Awesome.
