fault still not fixed ??!!
Well .. all that re-wirering and the car left me stranded again. This problem has us all stumped. There is spark and it seems there is fuel .. but the car just dies for no reason. It died on me on the way home on the hyw. I was doing about 80 kms and it died .. then ran for about a km and then dies for good. I tries to start it ..it started and ran really poorly after about 1/2 hour and then quit. I had it towed to the mechanic .. got it off the tow truck ..then the car started and ran perfectly. ??????????? VERY ODD

Possibly fixed fault ??
Acting under instruction from the nissan master .. Doug .. I took off my air flow meter and dissconected the electrical plug connector to it. I then peeled apart the plug wires to revel about 6 wires going into the plug itself. I then cut the front two (which were green and the others were black) and connected them together. I did this because the Nissan Master Doug believes that these wires are for some sort of a safety kill device that work to stop flow from the fuel pump incase of emergency and he had a similar problem like mine years ago and this is how he fixed it. If anyone is interested .. I can keep you posted as to how this "fault finding mission" turns out. I really dont give a rats a** about the FI system anyway cause we are going to rippit all out and through it in the lake in afew weeks. I have begun the SU re-build and the gathering of parts to install the SU's in afew weeks. So I dont yet know if the re-wire fixed my fault yet .. but I guess I will find out tomorrow. I thought I would try this forum. My car seems to die when it gets hot. There is spark. I let it cool down a bit and it starts. Anyone wanna through some ideas at this. Also .. I found a toggle switch under the dash. I think it is a kill switch cause when the car it running and I flick the switch .. the car dies. It is hooked up directly to a green wire with blue tracer. Right under dash by drivers right knee .. out of the main harness. BTW this is a 77 280 Thanks ..Cheers Bruce

Also .. I have been tring to get my temp guage and oil pressure guage to work again .. they seem to be acting up now .. I have cleaned the conection to the sensors .. and when I went to start it again .. that is when it wouldnt go.

Ok ..If there is anyone around now .. here is an update on my problem and if anyone can help me that would be great. I am hoping this car will get me to work tomorrow. I have tested for spark and all is ok (on # 2 anyway) it seems that this is a fuel problem. Car runs well then either dies when driving or wont start after running for awhile. I have been playing with this thing all night. I have posted before and had a few good answers .. I am wondering if there is a fuel regulator .. or something that would cause this intermiten fault electricaly with the fuel to the FI? Thanks ..Bruce

EScanlon ya .. sorry .. I did kinda run through that quicker than I should have. The Car has run really well for me for two weeks. I have driven it every day with no problems. I finaly got all the parts I needed to do the tranny swap and took it in to an mechanic that specializes in Nissans. He did the swap over. The Car gave him problems not starting .. well actualy he adjusted the idle down abit for me and the car died and wouldnt start. We checked over a few things and found an electical connection in the front of the motor that was old and perished. He said if that was not making good conection it would make the motor run rich and die (BTW when the car wouldnt start it was getting lots of fuel and we it smelled rich) so we put on a new connector and the car strted and ran fine. We thought we solved the problem The minor electricals is netral switch, and reverse lights. Yes it was AT to 5 spd. On my ride home we were powering along in 4th gear and lost power completely and rolled to a stop. Car started afew mins later and I drove home. My thoughts now are to do the SU swap now and eliminate all this electical crap related to the FI. I have a set of SU's I could rebuild .. but in the mean time I would like to get this car running. How would you find this kind of fault ?? Thanks for your feed back .. Ü

carb change over from FI
Ok .. I have asked before .. but it is time for me to change this crappy FI system out and install my SU's. Can anyone run down the parts I will need to change my 77 280 over to SU's. I know I will need to install a fuel pump. I am going to use an electric pump. I am going to contact ZTherapy and am considering their carb exchange. Other input on this subject would be great. BTW I am doing this cause I am having electical fault with the sytem now and I dont want to put time and money into the FI system cause I think it is crap anyway. Cheers ..bruce

finding the fault .. help
I have just had a 5 spd tranny from a 280 zx installed in my 77 280. We have done very little to the car other than install new pedals under dash (close to the injector relay) and other minor wireing issues. I now have an intermiten fault. The car didnt start for some time till we replaced a wire relay . (and we though we had fixed it) So I am driving the car home and it dies on me. after 5 - 10 mins ..the car starts .. and we drive home. I know no one will tell exactly what the problem is .. but what are the first things to chack (other than spark and gas) What would cause the car to completely die when going down the road? clutch stainless line??
I have begun the auto swap to a 5 spd. I have decided to use a stainless braided line a bought from Lordco because I have not been able to find a line pre-made. This is a stainless steel brained line that I will be putting the fittings on myself. I have the line going staight from the master to the slave. I guess I will need to fasten the line to the firewall quite well to ensure it doesnt flex and twist. Does anyone have experience with installing this type of clutch line??? Can you offer me any advice. Thanks ..and Cheers ..Bruce

lighter flywheel...how much better ???
Thanks .. would standard oem slave and master work fine with higher perf clutch? What brand of clutch did you put in ? I am looking at centerforce 2 from motorsport with their light flywheel. Clutch express seems to have good stuff too.They were cheaper flywheel but more expensive clutch kit.

Right now I am trying to decide if I should spend the extra and get the lighter flywheel high perf flywheel. Can someone who has had the old heavy oem flywheel .. and then installed a light one please give me some feedback on if it was worth it etc. Also .. does it really make a difference if you install high perf braided clutch lines or just the regular oem type. Personaly I like the look of the steel braided lines .. but do they actualy perform better? Thanks ..Bruce

here's a question for all you mechanics .. I have a 77 280 that is FI . Should the rpm s drop when I remove the oil dip stick ..or the oil filler cap in the valve cover. If not .. why would it do this ? The motor almost dies when I do this. thanks .. bruce
