Trans #s on bellhousing
I am not settled yet. But there is a more noticeable "gap" between 1st and 2nd than between 2nd and 3rd. I learned never to short shift first. Also, the increase and decrease in revs at a given speed when shifting from 4th to 5th and back is about 25%. Both of these factors are consistent with a 2-3 close ratio 5 speed with a .750 overdrive. I am going to go check the code on the block to see if it is consistent with an 81-83 trans. Can I see if the trans has one ear or two without putting the car one lift?

Trans #s on bellhousing
Thanks for the link, it should help. I agree that it is unlikely that it is a T5. But the mechanic (since retired) who did the swap, was very knowledgable about Z's and had a complete machine shop in his garage. The swap was not a simple pull and replace. I saw the entire engine and trans completely apart and being blueprinted and balanced. I know that he overbored, honed and decked the block in his shop. So a more complex swap was within his ability. (he did a complete resoration of a MG Midget for my father which started with the car in bags and ended with it looking like it just came off of the assembly line - except that it was dead bang reliable). From looking at the link with the corresponding rear end and 5th gear ratios, my guess is that I have a 5 speed out of an 81-83 non-turbo. The car takes a while to get there, but has serious top speed with the 3.36. I am learning more about how much I forgot about my car every day. Also I take it that the serial number on the belhousing means nothing?

Trans #s on bellhousing
Posting from work today, sorry for the new post. I am sure that I still have the original rear end - 3.36, because the car was bone stock when I bought it in 1981. I am trying to figure out what trans I have. I think that it might be out of a Turbo ZX because the wheels I have are the 15" Turbo ZX wheels (look kinda like a swastika) and I beleive that the wheels came off of the same car that donated the trans, and maybe the block, though the heads are definitely N42.

Trans #s on bellhousing
I have been trying to identify the 5spd transmission in my 73 240Z (originally a 4 spd). It was installed 16years ago and I cannot remember what car it came from. I have read about the trans types, all of which have codes beginning with F. I have also read many threads, including one which said that there are no stampings which mean anything. However, my 5spd has this number stamped on the top of the bellhousing -T7Y09774. What, if anything does it mean? In tryng to ID the tranny, this may help. Since I never changed the speedo gear, every since the swap, my speedo reads more than 10mph off, too low, in top, now 5th, gear. Thanks.

New to Z-cars, what's the potential?
Here is my personal expereince from 25 years ago re the 240z v its competition. In the late 70s, I owned an MG and was totally into British sports cars. I was looking to move up to a Healy 3000 or a TR6. I tested quite few in 1980. Then I happened to test drive what became my 240z, I forgot all about British sports cars. Re the comparison with the RX7, In the 80s, I had a friend who had an RX7, the last year with the original body style, but the bigger engine and a manual transmission. It was bone stock and like new. We raced against each other on rural roads and swapped cars on ocassions. No matter who was driving my modified 240z, it was always the winner by a large margin.

Need Gas cap OEM or Locking
Thanks for the suggestion. I had seen the gas caps on e bay and they were a little too pricey. I contacted Chloe at Midwestz and purchased a gas cap for much less than the e bay price. As for the exhaust, I was considering the turbo system from MSA. I contacted MSA about their twice pipes system and the rep said that it was too loud and suggested the turbo system. However, I had seen a post on this or another forum in which there were a couple of complaints that the guage on the MSA system pipes was a little too thin. I also have always had straight through mufflers (even my wife's wagon has stainless steel Ultraflows). So I am not sure about the chambered turbo and super turbo mufflers on the MSA system. I wish there was someone with the turbo system nearby so that I could hear it before I bought it. I may see if MSA will sell me just the pipes and use a small Ultraflow.

Need Gas cap OEM or Locking
Hello everyone I have been eavesdropping for a while and thought it was about time to post. I have had my 240Z since early 1981. I got it from El Paso, Texas (high and dry), in mint condition with 40,000 miles. In 1983, I converted to 2 Weber progressive down drafts, a 6 into 1 header and a Monza exhaust. In 1987, I did the modifications in my signature. With the arrival of wife, house and kids, the 240Z has ended up sitting covered in my garage unused since 1991 with only 68,000 miles. I have resisted the urge by my wife to sell it, including one time when she listed it for sale on the internet without telling me. I almost sold it to finance modifications to my Impalas SS, but just could not part with it. After my wife told me that I was too old for the Z, I have decided to never sell it and am now in the process of getting it back in shape. It starts right up, and still looks, runs and drives great. However, I need two things to get it to pass emissions so I can get it relicensed. 1. A new gas cap. My locking cap broke when it was dropped. I have checked around and it does not seem that the locking ones are still in production. I cannot pass emissions with out a good gas cap. Does anyone know where I can get a locking gas cap or an OEM cap? 2. A new exhaust system. My old system from 1987 rusted out over the years of storage from periodically starting the engine. I have done a search and it seems that there are many different opinions on this issue. I actually like how my car sounds now with what is basically a striaght pipe, but that won't cut it with the State of Illinois. Does anyone sell a mandrel bent system? What is the best 2.5 inch system? Thanks.
