  1. I bought a 73 4 speed and correcting some wiring issues found all the automatic transmission relays still in place. I doubt the previous owner swapped in a 4 speed after looking at the wiring issues. My question is: Did Datsun produce 4 speed cars with automatic transmission relays in place. I was told by the PO that the first owner was the wife of a Datsun dealership owner. If so, why buy an automatic and convert it?
  2. there is a spring loaded adjuster that slides along side of the timing chain. If there is no more adjustment you need to replace the timing chain.

On my 73 the PO didn't connect the right side air/vent/heat cable, found it hanging in the wind. Where and how does the cable mount to the underside of dash?

I think it should take a small adjustment, try it.

I got the threaded sleeve out but can't get the actual sensor out of the sleeve. Soaked it in PBlaster. Had the nut in a vise, careful not to damage the threads, and tapped on the top of the sensor with a hammer. No go.

My water temp gauge doesn't work. Bought a new sensor and was wondering how to swap it out. Work it out with vise grips?

I have a 73 that I have been working on. The PO had a small column mounted tach which I disconnected. He had the light wired to the driver's side parking light. Removed. I updated to a Pertornix module and in the process found a green wire and a black/yellow stripe wire cut off inside the harness that carries the wires to the temp sensor and distributor. Anyone know what they are for? My step father drove the car from Memphis to Phoenix with no problems. I still need to tackle the non-working stock tach. He also had an aluminum radiator with an electric fan haywired in. I removed all that and installed a 3 core radiator. I have a picture posted of the wires in question in My Z Photos. Thanks

If you have a points style ignition the points may be bouncing. Try a new set.
  13. Thanks for the link. I'll try motorcycle shock oil.
  14. I stumbled upon a complete competition suspension a few years ago and am finally getting around to the install. I didn't realize it at the time but when I pulled the springs off the rear struts and pulled the shocks they were the original oil filled type. The oil escaped before I realized what was happening. D'oh! My dilemma: rebuild the shocks, replace with aftermarket Koni or Tokico, or sell the whole shootin match. I was going to put these on my V8 project but am now thinging about comfort. How much oil do they take and what kind?

I was at a friend's house in Chardon, Ohio around 1973. An acquitance of his pulled up in a Orange 71 240Z. I had been ogling them for awhile and he asked me if I wanted to drive it. I said sure. He wanted to show me the ropes, so to speak, and we left for a short ride. It had been raining earlier and the roads were damp. Two lane blacktop. We were tooling down the road and came upon a young kid riding a motorized scooter. The kid was in the left lane going in the same direction we were. The driver was coming up to pass and tooted the horn to warn the kid. Just as we were about to pass the kid swerved in front of us and the driver cut hard to the right to avoid hitting him. We drove into a drainage ditch, slid into a driveway embankment and roller the car over once. No injuries but the car was totaled. I bought my first Z shortly after that and have had at least one ever since.
  16. Your right. My 72 is stamped D 2 on the rear pad and the 73 shows Z 3. The plot thickens.
  17. My 72 which I know is original is stamped FF-SP. Look at yours and post the number.
  18. Trying to attach a pic
  19. It's stamped into a machined pad on the valve cover rail by the thermostat. I'd post a pic but the image is too large and my photoshop is kaput. E88 is cast on the head.
  20. I have a 73 with a head # FF 015 MCT. Any decoding available?
  21. I had my car painted last summer. The painter mixed up a sample and sprayed it out for me. I had more metallic added to it. I see no reason why you couldn't do the same.
  22. I have been sitting on a set of Shelby Vipers since I bought them new in 1975 I have new center caps (Shelby) and new tires mounted. I was going to put them on my V8 project but that's not going to happen anytime soon. You may see them on Ebay soon.
