come on you guys ... nothing... no one has any ideas? Where's all the L engine super nerds? OOOOOOOOOPS! PLease disregard this post ... I didn't see the posts. Im a dork. Rock on Z people Matt- P.S. I was just planning on running the stock boost ... which is like 8Lbs or something right?

Hey Z people, Has anyone or does anyone know weather or not I can turbo an F-54 block with flat head pistons. I figured out the compression ration would be 8.07:1 the stock turbo L28 was 7.45:1 (I think) Is the extra compression gonna be a problem? Rock on Z people
  4. The wire harnes Im not sure about but I think you can keep the same one. You just tie into the existing harnes with the fule injection and computer. all you have to do is pull the stuff from the car you get the engine out of. Yes the l-24 is exact same block as the L28 block ... because the block has just been bored and stroked. there is some slight internal differances between the blocks but the block is the same size. That's one of the reasons that its such a great swap. Tripple webbers are kinda expensive about 700 bucks I think and there kinda tricky to tune. If I could do it again I would build a turbo... come to think of it ... I can do it again :devious: Good luck man, let us know what you go with. Rock on Z people, Matt-
  5. Hey Gavin Good tips on the engine build up. Do us Yanks a favor and try to find out what engine that distributor is from and what kind of mods are nessary to make it work. Now about those pretty balance tubes, we have them too, we just have to make them ourselfs . That L-28D crank is hard to find here in the states too, but motor sports sells a 3.1 kit with the crank rods pisons and rings for $1200 U.S. they could ship it to you for a few hundred bucks. Here is the link if your interested. http://www.zcarparts.com/body.htm I'll just leave you with this little bit of info. A working L-28 turbo engine from my local junk yard is $450 U.S. Rock on Zed People (i'll never get that Zed thing...It's a ZZZZZZZ ) Matt-
  6. You asked for it so here it is... L-28 (F-54 block from 1981 280ZX) the block has 20 thousands over bore new rings and pisons 20 thou over rotating mass balanced (crank, pistons, rings, rods, flywheel, pully, clutch pressure plate) new bearings (main and rod) N-42 head with 3 angle valve job Schnider cam with 460 lift and 273 Duration Schnider performance springs to prevent "valve float" New nissan rocker arms HKS 2mm Steal Head gasket (for lower compression 9.2 instead of 10.1) E-88 intake manifold SU Carbs with SM needles MSA header 6-2-1 2.5 inch exause pipes back to Flowmaster muffler 81 280ZX electronic distributor and coil 1980 280ZX 5 speed trans New 3 row radiator K&N air filter for breathing Well I think that's everything but I might be leaving something out. With this build up I get some pretty bad arse torque, it pulls hard from 2000 -6000 RPM. I would guess that I have somewhere from 150-160 rear wheel Horse power. that may not sound like much but the stock L-28 gets about 109 RWHP. I'm getting those numbers from the break horse power rate of 145 minus 25% for drive train loss (if im wrong on that I'm sure someone will correct me). This build up is very streetable. My next engine will be a turbo for sure not to mention a bitch'n 3.90 rear end. I hope this helps you decide (go with the turbo). Rock on Z (and Zed) people. Matt- P.S. I always feel bad about talking about the L28 turbo because of you aussi fellas but then I remember that you have RB engines and we dont
  7. That's the beauty of the turbo swap there is no mod's needed the turbo block is vertually the same block at the L-24 you have in your car now. The turbo motor just drops right in like it was ment to be there. You will use the same engine mounts for the turbo as you did for the L-24. The most important mod to do with the trubo swap is a better radiator, if you drop in a 4 row you will be able to keep that big HP motor cool as a cucumber. Matt-
  8. All of these threads and not one mention of a turbo L-28. I have a N/A L-28 build up, and its a great every day driver. I used to have the L-24 but I swaped it out and what a differance. The added torque is great. I'm probable putting about 150 or 160 to the rear wheels (Just a guess, I haven't dynoed yet) and I can blow people off the line all the time. Now my next engine swap will be to a 82 ZX turbo. If you pull one straight from the junk yard with the Borg warner tranny It might cost you about $700. and a stock turbo L-28 will give you over 200 to the rear wheels with no mods at all. If you raise the boost and get a better computer, bigger TB, bigger injectors, Horse power can get really impressive. There is a guy on this site that was putting 360 RWHP and about 380 lbs ft. of torque from an L-28 turbo. If you want big HP I would go turbo not a 3.0 or 3.1 they're super expensive and they dont have the HP and torque potential that the turbo has at half the price. Also with the turbo the compression ratio is really low 8.2:1 I think so 91 octain will work great. Think trubo!!!!! Rock on Z people Matt-
  9. I agree with Carl. I doubt it would be the engine balance. balancing the engine should be the last thing you do. check all the stuff that carl mentioned first and try everything eles that you can think of before you break down that engine. Good luck, Matt

Hey vicky, thanks for the post. My idea for a 6 speed is that with the curent 280z 5 speed when you put a "faster" rear end on your cursing RPMs go up about 500, so with a 6 speed you could maybe run a 4.11 rear end and keep the low RPMs of the "slower" rear end. Not to mention how fast you could got with a 6 speed. lets see 90mph at 4000 in 5th gear so maybe 3000 in 6th? By the way I really dont know $hit about trans ratios and stuff like that so maybe it would be a waste of money and energy to put in a 6 speed. Any one eles have some ideas or comments? Matt- P.S. think how cool it would be to have a close ratio short through shifting.

Hey Z people, Does anyone know the proper torque for the front wheel hub bolt? Its the bolt that holds the roter and hub on and keeps the bearings in place. Or do you just turn it till its tight? :stupid: Matt-
  12. The Ztherapy DVD Is awsome! The Just SU's video will totaly teach you EVERYTHING about rebuilding your carbs Rock on Z people! Matt-

No one!?!!???? I'm the only one that has ever though of this? Does anyone have any thoughts at all? Matt-
  14. Hey tom, Im sure you know this but when you ballance your engine you need to ballance the whole thing as follows... crank, pully, pistons, rods, rings, flywheel, clutch pressure plate (and all the bolt that hold that stuff on). I had my engine ballanced and It revs up to 6500 smooth as slik. Good luck! Rock on Z people! Matt-
  15. maybe check your motor mounts? Are all of your pistons firing? Thats all I can think of. Matt-

It wont keep running indefinatly but for about 5 seconds or so. Ill try the coil trick, carfully! Im already using 91 octain which is the highest we have here in Southern California. Matt-

OOOOPs! I forgot to mention that my L28 is an SU powered hot rod. No fule injection for me (untill I drop a turbo in). My SU's also have SM needels. Your probably right MikeW It could be and electrical problem, on the other hand it could be that the compression champer glows red hot and with the higher compression that could be enough to ignite the air/fule mixture. By the way It only does it when the engine warms up. Matt-

Hey Z people... Why oh why, is my car running on!!!!! My valves are perfect(10 I 12 E) my timing is about 10 degrees advanced. I use 91 octain (I dont think that makes a differance). My compression ratio sis 9.2 :1. I have a performance cam 460 lift 270 duration with beef'd up springs. So if my valves are set right and my timing is good what elese could be causeing the runon?! Could it be something in the dizzy? could it be an exaust manifold leak? Or maybe a hidden vacum leak? Any Ideas would be great, I'm pretty tired of using second gear to stop my car. Rock on Z people Matt-

Hey Z people, Has anyone ever heard of someone converting a new nissan 6 speed trans mission so that it would fit on a Z. Is it even posible? Is it just a matter of changing the input shaft and the bell housing? I don't really know anything about how tranny's work, but I was just courious. Matt-

good point Carl, I'll give it a try! Matt-

Yep its deiseling... I just checked the timing today. I have it as advanced as it will go with out "pinging" under heavy load. That's what the guys at MSA recomended Matt-

The engine runs really cool. I'd guess about 160 F on a hot day, I put in a new radiator with the engine build. As far as the carb floats I check thoes before I put them on the car so they should be fine. I just double checked the timing today and its fine (about 13 degrees btc). Any other reasons that is might do that? thanks for the help Jeff Matt-
  24. zeiss150 replied to zeiss150's post in a topic in Help Me !!
Sorry, I left that little part out... L-28 F54 block with flat top pistons .020 over bore, N42 head with a performance came ( 460 lift 273 duration), performance springs new rocker arms, steel valve seats three angle valve job, HKS 2mm head gasket, MSA header, 2.5 inch exaust dumping into a dyno max muffler, round top SU rebuilt carbs with SM needles, electronic distributer, Stock air cleaner box with K&N air cleaner. I think that is every thing. Just incase you were wondering I have about a 9.2:1 compression ratio. that is what the HKS 2mm head gasket is for it lowers the CR so I can use regular pump gas. Matt-

I don't know why my engine keep's running after I shut it off. I've check the timing, fuel mixture, exaust (for leaks), and vacume leaks, and I can't find any thing wrong. But it still runs after I turn the key off. It also runs backwards!!!! What the hell is going on? Rock on Z people Matt-
