Nope, gotta go dish on the wheels. Nice interior though, anyone know what kind of seats they are, they look great. Yeah, that engine bay..........it's terrible, looks like it has been completely neglected.....and those carbs.....

Luke, while I cannot check my block number at this point in time, sounds like that would be the setup in the car. Looking at Datsun Z Garage and some other sites, that would give a comp ratio of about 10:1 right? Did the P79 head ever make it to Aus? Thanks for the info guys

My Dad just rang me to tell me the Head No. The number he quoted me is N-42. Now, after having done some reading, was there a N42 head and an N42 block? My block is an L28. I was under the assumption it was from a 83 280ZX (F54 Block, P79 Head). Obviously this is partly or wholly untrue. Dad said that the number was at the front of the engine between the first and second spark plugs. If this N42 is the head no, then how do I find out what block I have? If the N42 is the block no, then how do I find out what head I have? My engine No is L28 275258. i that helps.

Just a quick question. My car is at my Dads place and I need to know where the head No. is so I can tell where to look. Any help? Cheers

As soon as uni finishes I am going to convert my 240 (L28) from that terrible, terrible EFi system to a set of round top SU's. First objective is to get the engine turning over (it has not done in over a year), then hopefully I can get it into drivable condition again before christmas...........then drive drive drive. My god I miss driving that thing, my girlfriends corolla just does not cut it around the corners. By the way, does anybody have the Z therapy video?????

Do all 240's have the linkage on the pedal for the hand throttle cable?

It all sounds a bit up in the air to me, my car has caught fire once before, I am prepared to do anything I can to stop it happening again. I think I will get a stock air box, it sounds like Datsun had the design pretty well sorted anyway (plus I get free airhorns!) Having somewhere to vent the valve cover would be an added plus also, anymore fumes from my car and I would pass out one the way to work!! (Joking, its...not......that...........baaaddd..................zzzz) Thanks for the help guys.

I too frown on speeding, about five years ago I was driving too fast around a cornern when suddenly I was sideways and then flipping, I rolled four times with four of my best friends in the car, stopping less than a metre from a large tree. We all escaped without any lasting injuries, however there were broken bones and a compressed spine in my case. The injuries however were nothing compared to the massive sense of responsibility I felt when I realised I had come so close to ending any one of my friends lives, let alone my own, no one has a right to put others peoples lives at risk. I do not speed at all these days and I consider myself extremely lucky to still be able to enjoy driving my z (when it is running). Besides, the Zed provides by far the biggest adrenaline rush and appreciation when it is in the curvy stuff. Drive safe people.

If what I thought were the fuel overflows are vents, where are the fuel overflows? Do I have any? I cannot find any labels for them in my workshop manual. Other than that everything is cool, thanks very much for your help guys, I am getting a good picture of where everything goes. Couple more questions: The vent hose from the valve cover, where can I run that (with the ram-flos), do I have to put a breather on it? Can you purchase balance tube gaskets, or will I have to cut my own (I don't mind doing this if it costs less..) Cheers guys :bandit: Kendall (viparz)

After looking at other threads I now know number 1 is the fuel overflow (the fuel inlets are at the very edges of the photo. As I do not have the stock aircleaner should I plug these or run them into the ram flo aircleaners or would this be advised against? number 2 (PCV Valve) this is what I thought it might be, does this connect to the crankcase? Also, is there anything missing, some of the photos on the site show a whole lot more hoses and things (Emission maybe?) Thanks

Hey guys, I am new to the carb game and was wondering if you could help me identify what these components for and what their purpose is. 1. What are these hoses, where should they go? It looks like they go into the stock aircleaner box (if you have one), can I drill a hole in the back plate of my ram-flo's and run it into them? 2. I understand this connects to the crankcase vent (my car is 350km's away so it is hard to see a logical solution), is this correct? What type of hose should I use. 3. Does this go to the brake booster, in other photos I have seen it heads off that way yet I cannot see where it ends up. 4. This is not labelled, but there is a hose that runs off the front carburettor, I have no idea what it is. Also, what is the best way to clean the foam from my ram-flo's, or should I just replace it. If anybody could impart their knowledge onto me that would be great. Cheers Kendall (viparz)
  13. There was also a article in Street Machine in about 1999-2000. The guy had done exactly the same thing, he put a VL (non turbo) into a 240Z. Not only that, he put in the VL's drivetrain (diff, suspension and brakes). get in touch with the magazine they may be able to get you a back order. It's a hell of a lot of work, I would recommend starting with something simpler to build your knowledge. If you are fixed on the idea, the VL did have an RB series engine, so yeah, check out that section on the site.
  14. Thanks guys, your information has been really helpful. I now have a much clearer idea of what I have to do. I am sure I will be asking many more questions once I get underway.
  15. I have a 1972 240 with a L28 from a 1983 280ZX. The guy who owned the car before me made the swap and it has given me nothing but trouble, it all ended with an engine bay fire. This car is not to be a daily driver so efficiency is not a concern. I am no mechanical genius and even less so an electrical genius. Am I right in believing that swapping to SU's would make everything much simpler? As I am teaching myself as I go an advantage of this would be being able to use stock wiring diagrams. Has anyone had any major issues that I need to look out for. What effect will this have on the compression ratio? A list of things I will have to change, if there is anything I should add please tel me. 1. Intake manifold 2. Carbs 3. Low Pressure Fuel Pump 4. Throttle cables, linkages, choke (I am not clear on these, any clarification would be appreciated) What can I get rid of from the EFI (Carbon canister?, Air Flow Meter etc)
  16. I am about to do the same changeover. The guy who owned the car before me made the swap and it has given me nothing but trouble. This car is not to be a daily driver so efficiency is not a concern I am no mechanical genius and even less so an electrical genius. Am I right in believing that swapping to SU's would make everything much simpler? As I am teaching myself as I go an advantage of this would be being able to use stock wiring diagrams. Other than the manifold and carbs, what else would I need to change to make this conversion? Any help would be great

You have probably heard of this problem a million times before but I need help. My battery is draining while driving. At first I thought it was the stereo but I disconnected it all and still have a problem. I know it is not the alternator, as that was my original suspicion and I have already forked out for a new one. The charge is reading at about 12.5 volts over the battery when the car is running. My starter motor is on the way out (could this be draining power) I say this because on long country drives I don't have a problem, but after a few continuous short city trips, my car will not start. Headlights, indicators etc all work, just will not start. Also my headlight fuse gets very hot, could this be the problem. Any ideas for finding the problem, I have spent too much time and $$$ trying to fix this. HELP!
