Auto to Manual Conversion Guide
PIC 6 - Clutches old and new. This is the new clutch (for 280ZX) and the old clutch. They look like they are exactly the same, though the height of the old one was slightly less. I figured it would compress through use? PIC 7 - Degreasing bolts etc. Had these soaking for a while to get rid of the muck. The gearknob didn't want to come off, but it eventually did (someone glued it on). Thread still looks ok, so should be good! Yes, I have another knob for it. PIC 8 - Exhaust. I managed to get this off today too. It was not that hard. The car is very loud now!!! PIC 9 - Flywheel + Clutch master and slave cylinders. The flywheel has been machined and I bought a new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. PIC 10 - Other bits. These are all the rubbers and seals that I bought. I have still not found a gearstick inner rubber (I've been to wreckers and emailed a few places) but Scott's Old Rubber says that they have something similar... they are getting back to me. I also took out the centre console. Might have to do something (secret project) while its out

Auto to Manual Conversion Guide
Update time! Most everything is ready to go now. I've got some pictures to share. PIC 1 - Gearbox. I think I already uploaded a picture of the box but here it is again. I do believe it's a 240K box even if we have a 280ZX clutch... PIC 2 - Bracket. This neat litte bracket will allow for adjustment of the clutch. I have also drilled the holes where needed so it's all ready to install. I'll take another picture once it's in there. PIC 3 - Brake Pedal. These pedals were actually not from the parts car, but another 240K I found a year or so ago at a wreckers yard. I picked them off in case I needed them later. The ones in the parts car were OK but had more rust, so we used these ones. Steve and I sanded them back to metal and then I painted them today. Primer then satin black. PIC 4 - Clutch Pedal. Same again. PIC 5 - Dust Cover. We also grinded back the dust cover to bare metal last night, and today I sprayed it with some silver hi-temp paint. Not really necessary at all but I wanted to buy some hi-temp paint anyway to paint my calipers later on.

Well, I have bought one now anyway! So we can have a go anyway.... I measured the 280ZX clutch again and it seems to be the same. Should be the go! I'm now painting the pedals etc. One question - would it hurt to paint the trans dust cover? I have some hi-temp paint. Pictures of my awesome bracket coming shortly!!

Interesting. I will ask Repco if they have one today when I pick up the 280ZX clutch...

ha, they look like the same front tyres as mine. At a guess I would say 7.5 and 8.5

AWw I feel for you. How long till you get better?? Maybe you could take this opportunity to do some maintenance work you have been putting off for a while, if you have any?

An urgent game ... what clutch is that?

Righto I have the 'Seal-Oil-Rear Extension (Transmission output shaft) 32136-U0100' now but Nissan can't get Crankshaft-Oil Seal for rear of block 12279-A4600'. Maybe I could use the one on my auto box if that is the same.

An urgent game ... what clutch is that?
Cool, thanks Victor and Michael. Can anyone shed light on the small part I circled and what its purpose is? And why the new one doesn't have it? Also, since this car WAS running and changed gears fine, can I assume the flywheel and t/o bearings have already been changed to suit the clutch?

Ooh, a 20th Anniversary special and a GTX-E with a 3.1

An urgent game ... what clutch is that?
Let's play... What clutch is that! This is the clutch that came out of my parts car. It is a larger overall diameter and thicker than the standard 240K clutch... so my question is, what is it!? At Repco they now have 2 clutches we think could be right. They're so damn similar though... a S14 200SX Silvia clutch and a 280ZX clutch. Surely it's got to the the 280ZX clutch? However, it's a little bit different to this one. The biggest difference is the side - it's missing the bit I have circled in red. The 200SX clutch has this bit though... I just don't know. I would hate to get a clutch to find it not the right one at all and just waste $200 odd. I am leaning towards the 280ZX purely because it would make more sense. I have also included a picture of the number on the gearbox if that helps - dont think so.

Awesome, maybe I should just leave my parts 240K on the front lawn....

Evel Knievel's 1971 240Z
This car has evidentally had a makeover after the initial "customisation" was done to it. Either that, or Evil had a few Z's done up... Here is a link to an article from a book my brother found at an old booksale and I scanned today because I thought some would be interested. It shows the process the modifiers took in detail and has a lot of progress pictures. Good to know he didn't ruin a mint 240 - it probably would be in a wrecker's yard somewhere if he didn't choose it... and for this reason, I like the car.

Thanks for the part number Michael (gunna have to get one of those books some day). It might help when I'm trying to find one... Miles (and Peter), is the gearbox rear seal the same as the engine rear crankshaft seal? What is that...? Flywheel has been machined, I will pick it up tomorrow. I bought oil, fluid, and some black paint for the pedals. Ordering in new clutch master and slave cylinders so they should arrive tomorrow. All bolts are now soaking in degreaser too. Tomorrow I will begin restoring the pedals, pick up all the parts I ordered and have another go with Repco about this clutch. I do not think it is right but you never know... And if I find out what this seal is I'll try to pick one of those up too Also, what should I use to block the bottom two outlets for the auto trans cooling?

My misfortune...
I'm no panel beater, but that sounds like a very good quote. Is that to beat it all back or to weld in a 'new' piece?

Son of DAT
Very interesting indeed!! Any other cars worth mentioning? If you ever make it over to the UK I highly recommend checking out the Beaulieu Car Museum. Easily the best one I've ever been to. Though, I haven't been to any in Japan yet :devious:

70's pinstripes and other cool details...
I'm not sure if anyone has posted pics of this yet, but take a close look at the details of this Black Pearl 280Z. It's overdone IMHO but might spawn some unique ideas for you

70's pinstripes and other cool details...
Hey Gav, my brother went to a huge old booksale on the weekend and picked up some old car stuff for me while he was there. Amongst it was a book from the 70's published in America called "Creative Customizing", which mainly features Z-cars and Corvettes! It also features the complete build up of Evil Knievel's 240Z. I will scan that article later, but for now, check out these pics! This is 100% authentic 70's "style"! ...I had to put the 120Y in too

Auto to Manual Conversion Guide
Thanks Peter, I went back to Repco today to try to sort this out. He rang up the PBR peolpe and they gave him some advice... apparently it is the same as an S14 Silvia cluch.......... it is coming in this afternoon but I won't be able to check it until tomorrow morning. I am not hopeful... Steve is going to come over this Thursday (Australia Day) so we can get started on the dissasembly of my auto trans. If you could still make it on Saturday that would be excellent P.S. I went to Nissan to see if they had the rubber boot that goes around the metal in the centre where the gearstick comes up. They can't get one. I don't know what to do about that :/

Interesting thought - we assumed you'd need one otherwise the spring would just pull it up further? I'll have to have a closer look

16" Watanabes on Ebay Australia
Hi Craig, thanks for the info regarding offset for Z's. I can't say I have ever looked into what to get for the Z car so I don't know what will fit and what won't - I do know what "looks wrong" though. Considering they have OK tyres as well I would say that's a good price. My Watanabes are F: 14x7.5 Type A and R: 14x9.0 Type R. I tried to work out the offset but I must be measuring from the wrong parts or something because I get -4.75 and -15.7 F and R respectively.

Auto to Manual Conversion Guide
Thanks Tom! I had a great time. Hope it can be of some use... however I will just point out that we are working on two 240K's - not Z cars - so it won't be exactly the same. I will edit the original post to make that point clearer
