E: Jeering and making fun of "things" is OK so long as it's not your "thing" that is being jeered at. Then it gets personal. (I'm not talking about you specificly, rather about anyone's "thing") Yes, I do say Z Police as a NEGATIVE. That's how their actions come across to some people. As for this "making fun of" being "part of membership", I could see that if it was between friends within the club, but this guy isn't (as far as we know) a partisipant here. Yes some people here know the history, etc of these cars but in past threads bashing specific cars many of the members partisipating and criticizing a car are members who consistantly prove (via their posts) that they DONT know much of the history (nor are they very knowledgable about) these cars. they are simply expressing opinions, and in many cases uninformed opinions, and bashing a car because it doesn't live up to their wet-dream ideal of a car. the case with burt is a classic example (PLEASE LETS NOT START IT ALL OVER AGAIN) He appeared and he responded to people who were already trashing his car (who didn't know $hit about it) but he did so by "giving" what he felt he was "getting" from this club. By doing it that way he made sure that no one would like him. That was his big mistake, but the actions of the members posting the comments about his car started it all and left him two options: 1. let people who don't know his car (or why he did what he did to it) trash his car at a time when he was trying to sell it, OR 2. defend himself/his car. It's too bad he was put in that position, but unfortunately he was, and he chose #2 and then (unwisely IMO) decided to give back what was given to him, which only inflamed the POLICE further (no surprise there). If the POLICING was just pointing out "this is missing" or "that is damaged", or "this is the wrong part for that year car" it would be one thng; but when it gets to comments like or or Sometimes the POLICE come across as enjoying trashing a car and/or it's owner just for the fun of it. According to the auction of the car this thread was meant to discuss the owner is an older person, maybe it's as simple as he lost interest after the body work was done. Nothing mechanical seems to have been done to the car. The look of the engne bay appears to be the result of being covered in Ziebart. If any of you have ever tried to remove all of that you'd understand how difficult it is. As for the dust and dirt on the 30+ year old engine and it sporting flat top carbs, it's nothing that a good washing wouldn't cure, and having flat-tops is certainly not a sign of the car being neglected in any meaningful way. Remember, it's a no reserve auction, it's not like the owner is saying the car is perfect and is worth $20K, or whatever. (who cares what the guy listing the car thinks, he isn't the owner, he's just the guy who copied & pasted a bunch of statistics from a book into the auction page and submitted it for his friend) I don't care for the wheels, but they would be easy enough to sell and replace. As for the small grille opening possibly causing overheating problems, an aluminum radiator and twin electric cooling fans would solve any such issues.

new shoes--new problems!?
I think that is all your problem was. The RWC needs to be centered so the F & R shoes contact the drum simultaniously. Easy for that to be out of whack when assembling the system by hand, but once hydraulic pressure is applied via the RWC, that sorts itself out. Operating the E brake handle (after everything is reinstalled on the car) will "self adjust" the shoes to the proper contact with the drum

Zactly. which is how the membership of this site has the reputation for being the Z police. one guy posts about the wheels, next thing ya know people are picking the car to pieces..............

Steering rack bushing problem?!
back when 240z's were new there was a common problem with the original rack bushings getting sloppy. some mechanics shimmed the original bushings, but a better (and more logical fix, IMO) was to install Nissan "competition" rack bushings. what dogma says is correct. if the brackets tighten down without resistance and obvious compression of the bushings............

OEM color of grill on hood?
"Ed" is a member. His name on the site is.........."Ed" Send him a PM? However, he's a 240Z guy, not sure if he'll know about a 280Z. The person who sugested you ask Ed was talking about the color of the tail light finisher.

new shoes--new problems!?
Sounds like the wheel cylinder might not be centered in the slot of the backing plate. If the shoes bind on the drum now, and if the adjuster is already screwed in all the way, adjusting the e-brake (which at this point could only "screw out" the adjuster) isn't going to help, it will make things worse. Proportion valve won't have anything to do with it. I'm not sure what you mean by "rear wheel adjusting". Are you sure that you have the shoes on right?

I think i bent something...
I bought one 2 years ago. Why not check around. MSA, Courtesy, Peak, VB, as a last resort even your local nissan parts clown who probably doesn't even know what a Z is.

Steering rack bushing problem?!
If the rack is moving around, it's not installed properly, or the rack housing itself is broken.

Speaking in general...... Is it OK to talk about situations where months and months are spent to find a rust-free z, a premium is paid for said car, and then the owner cheaps out and uses Fram oil filters on it? Opinions are one thing, but really who cares about your opinion of this car? You don't own it, from your attitude I'm guessing that you'll never own it. Why criticize what the current owner did (or didn't do) to it? It's not your cup o' tea, that's swell, but the owner didn't ask for your opinion, no potential bidder asked either so who cares what your opinion is?

Steering rack bushing problem?!
are you SURE the rack itself is moving, or could it be that there is play inside the rack. Like Inner Tie-Rod ends that are shot. If you have the "rack bushings" installed correctly and the bolts are tight, there is NO WAY the rack (itself) could move around like you describe. BTW, those shims are there because someone, (somewhere) in your cars past had time enough to replace the bushings but was too CHEAP to spend $20 buying the parts to do the job right.

IMO this isn't a part you want to buy in used condition. How much is your engine worth to you? Buy a NEW one unless you don't give $hit about your engine.

This is why I speed!
Ah, so that is where the smoke is coming from..........

I may be dumb but I'm slow
It doesn't have to start to use the markers! :stupid: Have your "assistant" crank the engine while you hold the timing light and look at the markers.
-
I may be dumb but I'm slow
are you using the timing markers at the crankshaft pulley to locate the proper timing location as you mess with the dist??????????

Waste of Plastic and Pot-Metal
Just got back from costco and saw a bunch of 1:6 Radio-controlled 350Z's for sale (Xmas toys).    wow, and I thought the 350Z was butt-ugly as a real car.....its even uglier in 1:6

Evel Knievel's 1971 240Z
no matter what it is, its been up for auction several times before and bids didn't even come close to the starting bid asked this time around. IMO there's a VERY limited marketplace for this sort of car. (even without the rust, mileage issues, etc.) Good Luck to 'em anyway.

Sure the engine is dusty, but it could be that the engine bay was treated with Ziebart or something like it. Z Police LAY OFF!!!! You give this site a bad name!

Evel Knievel's 1971 240Z
tail light finisher doesn't look like a 240Z unit, (not that the rest of the car looks like a 240Z anyway), but it looks more like dirivative of a later Z panel. With a starting bid price of $50K, I doubt it will draw any bids. Anyone want to place a bet?

Feeling horny? None for me thanks.
They are "stock ones". BTW, the winning bidder is a member of this website.

Can you tell me about a 1980 280ZX?
For a "novice" driver, I'd want something more modern, with modern safety features,(crumple zones, etc), and more reliable than a 25 yr old car. The last thing a novice driver needs is a sporty car. Better to learn how to drive safely in a modern car, then graduate to a sporty car when skill have been honed. This has been discussed in detail previously...........
