  1. I don't need the engine , but the 280 does intrest me. I have a 1977 coup and might need some odds and ends. Is the interior o.k? I only live in Seymour and work in fairfield. If possible I could stop by on the way home depending on your schedule. E-mail would not deliver . My e-mail is jemurphy12@snet.net. Thanks.

If the weather will allow I'll paint next weekend. I do have surface rust due to the amount of time it took to strip to bare metal. Can I just sand then prep or will this rust return to haunt me?
  5. Paint it whatever color you like. I'm about to hit 45 and they keep saying that i'm in a mid life crisis for buying the Z. I remind them spending all the time welding, sanding ,and staring at the floor in dispair for hours at a time is not a midlife crisis .And how the hell do they know if i'm half done with my life anyway! Besides a color change will allow you to find anything that needs to be fixed. Just look at my gallery to see my suprises. looking to paint a color close to that of Blitzkraig Z car.

I need to remove the exterior door handles from my 1977Z and do not see where they disconnect. The bolts are off along with the inside panel ,but where the rod comes down to the latch mechanism is where I am stuck. I don't want to break any small parts. Thanks.

I noticed this ad this morning in our newspaper. It reads 1972 240Z attention all Z lovers. running condition , brown for sale whole or parts, needsnew owner and tlc. garaged $900 or best offer. Even though I have a 77 280 I'll have to admit I'm tempted! The phone # is (203)382-0305. This is in Connecticut and the first I have seen in the paper for a long time. If anyone is serious in the car and not just curious I will try and help if I can.
  12. Here goes , My name is Jim I am 44 yrs old and an MRI technologist for a radiology group . I am married with 2 stepchildren and we have an 8 year old girl together and a labrador ( if he only had thumbs). back in the mid 1980's I drove a 1979zx and 1982 zx along with several motorcycles. Had to sell the 82 when I got married and finally decided it was long enough without one. It will take alot of work which I am new to but the advice I have gotten off this website from you guys has has made this progect go a bit easier. And Escalon the longer the post the better espically when it comes to bodywork. Thanks

When replacing the dog leg I found out the half the fender well was fabircated out of filler along with a large plug of it in the rocker panel. Not happy but o.k. i'll deal with it.Then went on to stripping the paint from the lock side of the door only to discover a hole (once the filler was removed). This one is going to take some thought to fix. Put that one aside and unpacked rear quarter patch panel to find it does not fit this car! Thought it best not to lift up carpets tonight. Called it a night and decided to check out some of the finished Z cars on the site. Thanks , just thought I'd share.

Thanks for the info. You guys always have the answers to the problems the books don't mention. When I got the dogleg off the rust haden't made it to the inner steel yet. I did have to remove the entire dog leg to do it right . Not fun at all getting to those spot welds. Flat chisel and box of bandaids. Only the bottom around the wheel area needs attention. Should be able to weld up the rocker and dogleg next weekend. Thanks again

I am going to try a plastic primer by rustolium then cover it with a satin or flat finish . Hopfully this keeps the paint from cracking. It may not be the best fix but if it's the worst let me know.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the back of the rocker panel out of the dog leg? Or plan B , cut it off even and weld? Thanks

It's the piece just above the rear bumper and below the tail lights on the 77 z . The manual called it a " sight shield " probably because it covers the gap between the bumper and the rear of the car? I just don't want to damage this taking it off .This is my first time doing a restore so half the battle is just explaining the question. Thanks

More bondo over rust!!! Now I have to remove the rear sight shield which is over the rear bumper . It looks to be spot welded but with the angle it is at I am not sure how to go about removing it? Also what type of paint can be used on the rear trim panel around the tail lights? Learning the hard way but still having fun. Thanks Jim M

I gave up trying to salvage the paint because of too many small bubbles in paint ect. ect. While stripping the roof I noticed the crack in the paint at the seam. They filled it with bondo along with 2 coats primer followed by more primer and paint. I figured too much to paint over anyway. But how should I fill the seam ( which looks to be deeper and wider than it should) so the new paint does not crack? Thanks for all of your help during this project. Jim M.

Thanks for the info . Plasma cutter is out of budget , using drmel and bad words for the time being. I will have to remember to clean the back first ,forgot about that . welder shopping this week. Thanks

I'm getting ready to cut out the rust and weld in new metal. This is my first restoration project and I am going to DIY no matter what. I could use some advice on a welder purchase keeping in mind I only have 100 amp service. The frame rails are in great shape so I only have to weld body panels and rockers. Thanks Jim M.

O.K. the Z (1977) finally arrived last night. This morning I took off the fenders to clean out behind them and the cowl. Very happy with how the drainage worked and only slight surface rust. I think the rockers are shot , in the front where they curve up they are rusted through and along the bottom there is rust. I can' t tell where the front seam is between the rocker and the door rail (A pillar?) is at the front? Does anyone think it is best to replace or cut and patch, and if so where is that seam?? Now the doors, bubbling at the bottom corners with rust on the inside bottom. I'm thinking cut and patch instead of skins ( the doors come off tomorrow). There are some other minor spots but for now one thing at a time for me. I appreciate any and all opinions Thanks Jim M.
