L28 (F54) Block Problems
Thanks guys, and thanks Deaus !! I was the one having the issue, and yep, that is the "pipe" which I broke. I was really starting to worry, as although I couldnt see any obvious purpose for em, I had just cleaned and painted and replaced the welsh plugs on the block and didnt want to have to start again. Thanks guys!! Ray

Have I killed my block(F54)?
On the exhaust/intake side, I think about the second plug from the front

Have I killed my block(F54)?
I was removing my welsh plugs (maybe they are called freeze plugs in the US?) and I think I hit one a bit too hard when I was taking it out. There is a little pipe that comes out from where the cylinder walls meet, it comes out and then goes up to the top of the block....anyway, I actually think I broke it at the top. Is my block screwed? What was that pipe for ? I dont think all of the cylinder walls had the pipe coming out from between them, just a couple. Cheers Ray

Compression with premium unleaded
Just wondering, a lot of the books I have talk about max compression you can run on the street with pump petrol. The thing is that the pump petrol they were talking about was relatively low (91 octane). These days in my area (australia) we can get 98 octane fuel....so when they say dont run anything above 10:1....would I be safe running maybe something like 10.6:1 ??

260Z 2 + 2 Australia 4 Sale
Looks like a nice car, good luck with the sale Just wanted to note something for Australian Z'ers. Most of the information about Z cars on the net is from the US. In Australia the 260z 2 + 2 was not a rare model...simply because it was sold from 74-78...not like in the US where is was only sold for a year and a half.

which one...SU vs FI ?
Are you speaking from experience about the 280zx FI system in particular? Because everyone I hae spoken to has said the opposite. For starters the injectors are tiny. I dont know if the fuel system will be able to keep up with a high compression, mild cam and headers/exhaust. What Im worried about though is weather it can actually provide enough fuel at higher RPMS.

Which head to use?
The N47 does NOT flow as well as the E31. I have seen flow ratings for both heads(although the E31 did have oversized valves) and the N47 is definately lacking.

Maxima L24E head (E88)
opps...my mistake. I assumed that because it was the same engine produced in the same year, it was the same head. Oh Well.

Maxima L24E head (E88)
I asked the guys in the aussie forum these questions relating to this engine (L24E skyline). Just thought some of the yanks might be able to shed some light on the issue (as I only just found out this engine was availible in the states in the maxima). Just wondering if anyone can confirm how many CCs this head is. I've heard around the 40-42cc mark, although I havent measured it myself (dont have access to a burrette). The reason its so critical is that I am about to use this head on an L28 block with flattop pistons, and too small a chamber will blow my compression ratio out, and I dont wanna have to rebuild it again with dished pistons (which I also have). Can anyone who has used this head with flattop pistons or who has CC'ed the combustion chamber confirm the size/compression ratio expected ?

which one...SU vs FI ?
Just wondering what I should put on my L28 which is going in a 260z. I have the injection manifold and all the wiring etc, the only thing I have to do is fab up a surge tank and all the hoses etc. If I went to carbies I would have to buy a set as I dont have any at the moment. The L28 will be slightly warmed over (increased comp, mild cam, headers, exhaust) and Im not sure if the hassle of putting the FI on is worth it. My main concerns about the FI is that it will not be able to provide enough fuel (and at the moment Im not prepared to add extra injectors etc) and that it will be too much work to set it all up, but my main concern with the SU's is that it will chew way too much fuel. What do you guys recommend ? Cheers

Electronic FI relay...which L28 ?
Great, I'll look for one on a old Skyline (L24E) as they are much more abundant.

AFM from different Nissans
Yeah you are probably right. Although I cringe everytime I look at one of those VAF style AFMs.....
-
AFM from different Nissans
earlier nissans used an AFM with a door flap (vane air flow..or something?). a MAF sensor is a hotwire setup used on RB, VG, SR etc There are actually places which sell a unit which will conver the signal from a hot-wire MAF sensor to an older door flapper AFM, unfortunately these units are exxy. I wouldn't mind knowing how to make one, because without one Im stuck with using an old crappy door flap style AFM.

Electronic FI relay...which L28 ?
Just wondering if all L28's came with the electronic fuel injection relay...or if it was only on some? As I got an engine with wiring etc, but can't seem to find an Electronic fuel injection relay.... The engine is from a late 280zx. Cheers

AFM from different Nissans
Is the AFM from a L24E or from a S12 Turbo any different from the unit from an L28E? Any other cars I could grab them from ? I would rather use a MAF sensor, but money and time dictates an AFM at the moment, and seeing as I dont have one yet I'm just looking for a cheap unit from the wreckers. Cheers

E88 on L28
I was actually looking at the N42 vs E88 at full lift, and the E88 valves dont seem to protude into the bore anymore than the N42, so Im assuming I wont have a valve clearance issue with slightly increased lift (i.e 0.440) as I havent heard of such problems with the N42...although I would be best checking before firing her up. Although I am still confused as to why there is valve reliefs on the L24 piston tops (JMT240KGTR has a goof pic of the piston in his gallery).

E88 on L28
Yep, Im in Brissy. Think I might with flattops in the motor...10.5:1 compression should be sweet

Freshening up an L28 on a tight budget
I pulled my head off and found out it was all corroded. So I had to buy another head. There could be other things you find which are wrong with the engine once you crack the head as well....so be prepared.
