  1. Hey Vicky, from what I've read in HOT ROD and the other mags of the same type, 427 is attainable from a 400 small block chevy with the right bore and stroke and an aftermarket crank. Same old small block Chevy but pumped up to crazy power levels. I can't think of the brand names but I've seen some ads for "new" Chevy small blocks in a wide variety of sizes. 383/406/410/427...it boggles the mind that the aftermarket supports all the different varieties of Chevy stuff. Chris P.S. I actually read an article in I think CarCraft a few years ago where they built a 427 small block and called it the "Mighty Mouse". (Because big block Chevy's are called Rats)

The flat side of the seal should face out towards the drive shaft. Chris
  3. Just got my August edition of Hot Rod. It did a story on the "Pump Gas Drags" They invited 50 of the fastest street cars running pump gas. 41 showed up. Mark Eggers of Clearwater Florida wound up 31st. Here's the story verbatim. "Coulda, shoulda, woulda: Mark Eggers' combo of a 2,840 pound Nissan Z-car stuffed with 427 cubic inches of Motown small-block had the potential to take it all. Just two weeks before HOT ROD's Pump Gas Drags, it had run 9.35-second average e.t.'s to capture the True Street win at a Pro Edelbrock race-that's a quicker average than this year's Pump Gas Drags winner. Unfortunately, on the Memphis starting line the car bit more than it could chew: a two-bounce wheelie on the first pass did in the oil pan, and the resulting leakage prevented a third pass." The poor guy ran a 14.62 at 65.84 then ran a 9.25 at 146.38 before the oil pan stopped him. The winner was a 67 Chevelle that ran an average of 9.40 at 141. Would have been nice for the Z to beat up on all those others. Oh well, even though I dont like V8 conversions it was nice to see a 240Z in HOT ROD. The picture shows him doing " The Most Violent Wheelstand" He's quoted as running a best of 9.10 at 149. That's fast. Chris Attached picture better than one of holeshot

This past winter my buddy got his Civic SI stuck in an 8 inch snowfall....I drove TO him and pushed him out then DROVE home....in the Z!! I love to drive by folks in there FWD and 4WD cars and trucks while they're digging themselves out of a snow pile. My .02 Chris

Hey HKSZ, why is the DMV so picky about what engine when you register the car? I have a L28 in my 240 and the DMV could care less, they just want to know how many cylinders and what fuel it burns. Curious, Chris
  11. Thanks for the great reading Ben and Chris!! That LY powered car sounds like a gem. $60,000 US for the motor? 25 years ago even. Wonder what that is in todays money? SHEEEESHH!! Chris

  13. Stopped to get gas yesterday on my way to a club show. Guy walks over and starts to talk about how he misses his 77 280Z. Says he packed all his belongings in it and moved here from Cali. Then later I'm about 4 miles from the dealership where the show was and another guy pulls up and asks "what year" and I tell him to come to the show. He shows up and lo and behold, he's got THREE 240's at home in various states of repair. I think he's gonna get a lot of help getting them going now!!!:classic: Yes, it is truly amazing the number of people out there with such fond memories of their former cars and those I continue to find that have treasure at home hidden away. Chris

Car show Sunday 6-27-04 at Woodhouse Nissan in Bellevue. Starts at 2:00 PM. All you hidden Z owners out there in Nebraska and Iowa and Northern Kansas and Missouri come on up. Chris
  17. Mike's picture is exactly what was on my 73. The round knob controls the thermostat with the long stiff capillary tube that goes over to the evaporator. The switch is on/off for the compressor clutch. My compressor said "ThermoKing" on it and there was installation paperwork in the glovebox when I bought the car. Thanks for the memories Mike. Chris

Hey Allan, I got a set of zt carbs back when Scott Bruning was running the show. They're really good stuff. The shafts are machined where the butterflies attach for a little more flow. The have the roller bearings on the shaft ends. From a "seat of the pants" opinion I really like the way the zt carbs seem to "come on" around 3000 rpm versus stock. I dont know if this is due to the aftermarket engine cam plus the zt carbs, but the stock carbs didnt have that "surge". My 73 uses the stock intakes but I too have some N36's I am getting ready to install if I ever get the time. I'm going to port match them and do a little parting line sanding. I drilled and tapped the smog ports and vacumm hose fittings and am plugging them off. I wish I knew a shop that did extrude honing and didnt charge an arm and left nut because I here that's a good way to better the flow. The balance tube from the 240Z is supposed to work on the N36 setup but I havent checked that out yet. Anyway, the carbs are superb!! Much luck, Chris
