Any 5-speeds in the NW?
Hey guys, I heard that pull and save has a 240Z down there right now for like 1200 bucks. Not sure how good it is, but might be worth a look!

Whats your fuel economy?
Stephen, Are there two separate switches for Top and OD on the tranny? My memory says I have one type of sensor connector on the right side of the tranny in my 79 ZX. Did you just disconnect them and leave em hanging? Did you notice any improved driveability or difference in the way it ran? I recall taking the vacuum delay valve off of the timing advance when I installed the Big Throat Throttle body years ago, and thought I could tell a difference then.

Who Still Makes 215/60/R14 tires?
I am running the Avid Yokos on my 280 ZX I think they're a good quality, while all season radial. I found some H speed rated 215-60-14's at Les Schwab here in Washington. I have them on the 240_Z. They are OK, although made in Taiwan.Don't know if that makes a big difference. In retrospect I think would be as happy with the Radial T/A's. They seem more period correct, although you can only get em in S speed rated now. I had some T/A's on the 240-Z when I bought it. The also were H speed rated. They were called the "Euro" edition. Great tire but NLA.

temp sensor
My car started reading hotter on the guage after I replaced a bad stat with an aftermarket. Earlier this summer I got a Nissan OEM 170 degree stat, it helped some but still reads hotter than it used to on hot days. There seems to be a trend in people replacing their thermostats then seeing higher than normal readings, even if the new stat is OEM.

spings and struts are on! Big problem!
It looks like there will be a happy ending to this story. After documenting the issue with photos and receipts from my mechaninc, JW Automotive, the California manufacturer of ST springs, has sent me a release form to sign before they send me a check to have my mechanic switch out the springs front to back. Hopefully that will be the end of it. I have been driving the Z in its boat-like configuration all summer. The rear is pretty bouncy, because of the softer spring rates in the back, plus the obvious ride height issue. I think they finally moved to help me out after I contaced their parent company in Germany, and i got a resposne back from that office saying they wanted to make sure I was satisfied with my purcahse from them. I had also contacted our State Consumer protection folks, who this week finally sent me a letter stating they would be pursuing the case. I will let you know how the switch works out.

Nissan says: what's a 280z?
I know the official name changeover took place with the 1984 models, but I swear I have seen a 1984 300Zx that actually said Datsun somewhere on the body. The early 79 model 280zx's made in late 78 have a rear badge that says Datsun 280 ZX, the "by Nissan " bit was added to those made in 79. My Nissan parts counters in Spokane both have 240Z guys that work there. one has been there since 1974 and owns a low VIN 240-Z. When we were kids we used to phone parts stores and ask for parts like Muffler Bearings, I hadn't thought about that for awhile. The other joke I remember was asking for an upper radiator hose for a Chevy Corvair.

Shifter problem
How difficult is it to replace those bushings? I was going to ask the same question . My 79 shifter has felt a bit sloppy a of late.

Watch my Z video!!!
Great job! It must have taken some work to edit all that, there were some nice angles.

The Long Road Home
You must have the later five speed. My 79 280ZX with the 3.9 rear is at 3000 RPM at about 65MPH.

'71 that was on Craigs list now on Ebay
Steve, you did an amazing job on the orange car! I'll bet part of you is sorry to see her go.

I really like the look of the "British" spoiler on the front of a 240-Z. I don't know if any of our members have one. You see them on cars in England and Europe. They are very small, much smaller the the spook, like maybe three or four inches deep. They don't interfere with the original lines of the car much.

Peter brock Daytona cobra/datsun 210
If this helps ID the car, here is the engine. It is the Roush engine that bobc mentioned. In the scrapbook the guy had there were shots of about eight of the cars together at some event in California. Again, I think he said there 12 made? BTW, I mentioned the 240 Z connection of Pete Brock, and the guy pointed to a 63 Corvette coupe down the line and said Brock had designed the split window in Bill Mitchells studio.

Peter brock Daytona cobra/datsun 210
I was under the impression this car was made by Carrol Shelby. There was some Peter Brock link to the vehicle

Peter brock Daytona cobra/datsun 210
Our area car club held a car show this weekend in little ole' Nine Mile falls, Wa. There was a modern Carrol shelby/ Peter Brock Daytona Cobra on display. The owner said there were only like 12 or so made. I'm sure someone else on the forum knows more about this. The guy had a scrapbook with photos of Pete Brock with this car., and he had signed the cowling. Also talked to a guy with a 65 Vette roadster that said he once owned a 75 280 Z that was the"most fun car I ever owned", even compared to the Vette! And then there was this magnificent B-210, totally "tricked " out, including the fake NOX bottles in the hatch , made from chlorox bottles.

spings and struts are on! Big problem!
Well I was looking for a firm ride, as this is not a commuter car and will be driven mostly on the twisty two lanes. What I now need is for the front springs to be installed on the front and the rears in the rear. But thanks to the manufacturer mislabeling the springs, my car sits high in the front like a boat, with the softer springs on the rear. It sucks.

Cars crushed in street racing crackdown
Did all the confiscasted cars have stiolen parts? If they didnt', to me it smacks of a fascist state when cars are taken from their owners to be scrapped. Maybe we didnt get the whole story in the news report. Was the "due process of law" undertaken before all the vehicles were scrapped? The street racing issue aside,I find the attitude of getting down on kids for simply hopping up cars, whatever type of car, to be something you would expect from an old granny.

spings and struts are on! Big problem!
Just a note to say I am still hanging out waiting for some sort of decision from KW Automotive, tha manufacturer of ST springs. I have sent them documentation of the mislabeled springs with photos of caliper measuremnts of the springs, the before and after shots of the car, receipts from Shox,.com for the purchase, and a receipt from my mechanic for the 356 dollars to install them. I was told by a KW rep that he was putting together a case for me to take to his superiors, again in an effort to get some sort of compensation for the springs being mislabeled. Someone called my home on Monday and said a person working on my case would get back to me yesterday. But nothing has happened yet. Whatever the result, you will hear what happens. It could be good news for me or bad, but other club members will get a good idea of how this company operates. BTW, i finally got the shox. com foks to get involved. They called me back after I sent them an email, and they agreed to send a message to the KW folks asking for them to help figure out the issue to my satisfaction. I tried to impress upon both parties that our club would be looking to see how they fixed the situation.

Daily Driver
Well good luck Andy! I just stumbled on this post. I would have weighed in very favorably for the 280ZX. I have used mine as a commuter for 17 years now. Until last year that was every single workday. I have never owned a more relaibale car. And when i got it it had 95 thousand miles on her. Now at 173 thousand with original drivetrain and tranny. Hopeful your z31 will be as good!

Look at this picture..Is this too high
Hmm, well if I got that right the guage reads at three quarters when it was 110 degrees outside? That doesnt seem to be overheating in my book, Again, I wonder how accurate the guage is. There was that link in this thread to calibrating your temp sensor by the resistance reading. You could try using one of those laser thermometers and pointing it at the top of the ermostat housing when it is wamred up and seeing what your reading is. To me overheating is when the guage reads REAL hot. But I dont think it sounds like overheating with the reading your getting and it's 110 degrees outside.

spings and struts are on! Big problem!
OK, well we've had a chance to look at the springs, and it appears the culprit is indeed mislabled srpings from ST! The springs labled as "front" were 8 turns, but .498 inch in diameter. The rears (which had no label!) were .4515 inch in diameter, and had nine turns. Ok well before you say the rears had more tunrs, that must be right, recall that a represenative from ST manufacturer, KW automitive told me via phone"the fronts should have nine turns and be thinner." I just sent an email to the ST people with the results, and well see what they say. I plan to send them digital photos of the spring measurments as well as an estimate of what it will cost me for a redo. My mechainic and I feel it would be easiest to just re-do the fronts, since the rear sits pretty good. If they dont help me I may resort to replacing the front springs with the old Yellow "interparts" or old ST's I took off. We''ll see what the resulting ride height will be.
