What are all those hoses?
Abas, good point about the VIN number. I beleive Carl B has stated the series ones were supposed to be phased out after serial number HLS30 21000. My car is HLS30 20390.

How to test a flasher?
Has anyone had trouble finding the standard 240 Z flasher? I had to order one from the local Shucks. They say it should be a Beck Arnley part, but the warehouse sent em something else, that did not fit ( prong holes were at right angles, not paralell) There is no listing for one in the MSA catalog.

Ever weigh your car?
Ok first off I did a search and found one thread about different Gross Vehicle weights on the door jamb plaque. BUT have you ever actually weighed your car? Today I did so at the local dump. My 1/71 build date car weighed 2420 with me in it. I weigh 185 so thats 2235. I then went and filled the tank and it took 13 gallons, so the weighing was done with about 3 gallons on board. I didnt know if it would be that light with the period slotted mags and larger tires The first Road and Track article on the Z gave an unladen weight of 2238.

What year is this Engine?
Carl, regarding the 3.9 diff. I am the second owner, having bought the car 15 years ago. I suppose its possible the previous owner, a woman, could have done a switch, but my research indiactes the change to the 3.9 began around july of 79. My car was made in June and Ive always suspected the change in the assembly line in my car didn't include the correct speedo gear. It reads way high, especially when i swiched over to 60 series rubber years ago.

BCDD
Its called the Boost controlled deceleration device. Its an emmissions deal that keeps the revs up a bit when you let off the gas, so hydrocarbonms are burned more completely. I took mine off when i put on a larger throttle body.

What year is this Engine?
I think you'd be safe getting manuals for either a 79 or 80. My 6/79 engine had the BCCD on the intake. It did not have some of the pipework your micrfishe picture shows. BUT, my car also had some anomalies that were on the 80 models, like a 3.9 rear end. Oddly enough, the speedometer gear is not the one for a 3.9, so it has read high from day one! Datsun seemed to modify cars on the assembly line regardless of medel year, much like Porsche.

10% ethanol in a 77 280?
I have experience with this blend. Spokane has required use of the 10 % blend for years to meet emmissions standards in the winter only. I can attest to the fact this blend will reduce your mileage, sometimes dramaticaly. I keep accurate records of all my vehicle's mileage. With four, six and eight cylinder engines the blend results in 15-20 percent less mileage consistently. I suppose if you get a price break on this stuff that would be an ok deal. But it seems to defeat the purpose if the idea is to reduce emmissions, if you are actually using more fuel!

Any ZCCA Judges in the house?
Alan wrote (((Or even a non-USA market RHD 'Datsun 240Z' ( for example UK / Australian / NZ market model ) - or, possibly the thing most likely to cause maximum confusion, a non-USA / Canada market LHD 'Datsun 240Z' ( complete with Factory 5-speed, rear anti-roll bar, stiffer springs, dampers, front ARB and lots of other market-specific Factory items ))) Just curious, I didnt know canadian S-30's were more like the european counterparts, is that correct? Any canadian members here to confirm that?

Honk if you drive a Z, or Where's the love?
Hey I just stumbled on this thread today. Sorry if its an old topic. I have always tried to acknoweledge other Z drivers. Both when I'm driving my 71 Z or 79ZX. There can be a difference in the other drivers reaction. Some first gen folks wont check you out if you're in the ZX. Most first gens will notice the 71 and wave. Or both can be ignored by some Z owners. It funny if you get ignored by a guy in another 240 Z when youre in the ZXx and then see the same guy later and he waves at you when youre driving the 71! Today I was going through a green light at an intersection where I had to go around a guy in a big truck waiting to turn left. I proceeded slowly cause I could not really see if anybody else was waiting to turn in front of me. When I cleaered the truck I saw it was a guy in a real nice silver 240Z. He saw me in the Zx and we did a big wave. I thought later if each of hadn't slowed down there would have been a big wreck with two classic Z cars.

New turn signal now no horn
Still no progress made on my horn issue, but here's another question. while I now have functioning turn signals, it seems the speed is pretty slow. I notice if I put the emergency flashers on they seem to be at a normal speed. Do you think the actual flasher unit for the turn signals may be bad too?

Hit and run...advice
A question for Bryan about the fender. Are you saying the Nissan dealer would still have an S 30 fender in stock? Are the fenders MSA carries aftermarket? If so, what is the problem with them?

Hit and run...advice
Enrique has some great points, and it sounds like he is quite familiar with the system. But here is my limited experience. I have had two separate hit and runs on my ZX. I carry a fifty dollar deductable COLLISION insurance. In both cases the damage seemed small (to me) but they cost something like 600 each to fix. My rates did not go up after those inci dents (bad pun). Enrique is definitely right about more extensive damage being considered grounds for declaring the car totaled though. But I used my insurance because that's what I pay the extorshinist bastards for.

New turn signal now no horn
I did check the connectors, and even sprayed some contact cleaner into them after the horn failed to work. Hmmmm...

New turn signal now no horn
I finally put in a NOS turn signal switch in the 71, Nice to have front signals for a change! It now appears I lost the horn. But it's been a little while since I used the horn so, I dont really know. The little contact strip for the horn on the new switch assembly IS making contact with the horn ring on the wheel. Fuse is OK. Wonder whats up?
