My Datsun 240Z
Bart - Just checking in on your progress today. For what it's worth, the car always ran rich when I had it as well. I would say I changed plugs every 1000 miles or so (that was like once a year) because I could never seem to set the carbs lean enough. Also had trouble with the choke not fully closing ... but I'm sure you remedied that already with the carb rebuild. Regarding the vibration over 70, I don't think it's the tires as I recall a minor shake as wel,l and that was on the prior set of tires. Good luck. Alan

My Datsun 240Z
Hi Bart. Thanks for all the updates and pictures of the 240. I'm glad to hear you'll soon be enjoying her on the road. It looks good with European plates!! I'll check again to see if I can turn up anything on Steve Campbell. Was there anything on the paperwork that indicated his middle name or initial?

My Datsun 240Z
Robert, obviously we have exchanged messages previously since you had additional pictures of the Z. Hopefully you found a great car since we last talked. Sadly, there is no Z car in my garage right now, but you never know what the future holds - I dare say, it might be a 350Z roadster ... Anyway, I bought Bart's 240 from Steve Campbell in about 2003. Steve lived down the street from me when I lived in Kansas. He had owned her for something like 17 years prior, but it had been sitting in his garage idle for a long time before I bought it and toke it home ... 3 blocks away. I'm betting Steve would like to hear from Bart and find out his Z is in good hands in the Netherlands! I've lost track of Steve but I doubt he would be hard to find. On the other hand, I never had and contact with the original owner and I'm not sure if there was anyone else before Campbell. It will be interesting to hear what develops! I'd be willing to help if needed as well. Alan V.

My Datsun 240Z
Hi Bart - Alan VanGundy here - previous owner of your '71 before it crossed the pond! It's great to have found you and hear these updates on "my" 240! As a couple other members noted, I had the car for sale locally but ended up selling it to Stolze on Ebay. When the car left on an auto transport to the Netherlands, I figured it was the last time I would see it or hear of it. Small world indeed! I had found pictures of it on Stolze's website but I'm glad to learn it has found a permenant home. I was on these forums regularly when I owned the Z but haven't been around much since selling it. Imagine my surprise today when I found your comment on the Youtube video and finding this thread on Classic Z. I imagine it might have equaled your surprise when you found YOUR 240 on Youtube! Anyway, I have owned several "classic" cars and always appreciated knowing their history so I'm glad you received the paperwork I sent along with the car. I'll be happy to chat with you more and share comments on the car. Alan V.

240 dies instantly - progressive issue getting worse
Not long ago, I was driving my 240 daily. Occasionally, while driving, the tach would drop to zero and instantly revieve - like the car was going to die but didn't. I thought this happened most often over a large bump. After a displaying the above symptom for a couple months, the car would begin to die while idling -- no sputtering just instantly off. At first, it would always restart. Now, I've had to pull it home twice and it basically will not stay running longer than five minutes and is hard to restart. It will start for a split second (sounding really strong) but again die out instantly. It must be an electrical issue but I'm not sure where to start and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'd like to repair it myself but I don't like replacing parts on a trial and error basis! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Alan

What do you think of this Z?
Not sure where you are at but, this car is located about 30 minutes from me. I would be interested myself if I had the space. Send me a message if you are serious about this car. I would love an excuse to go check it out.

weatherstrip
Having just put V.B. aftermarket seals on my '71 and experienced the same problem of not being able to close the doors, I definetly recommend OEM. I finally got the passenger door to close completely but the drivers door will still only latch to the first click - and the seals have been on about two weeks!

Paint code Decal question
Speaking of paint, a while back someone posted a link to site where you could search all the new and old paint chip catalogs for automotive paint chips. I believe it was associated with one of the big paint manufactures. Anyway, I can't seem to locate the link again. Does anybody have it? Thanks!

My '71 on day of purchase - Feb 2004
From the album: 1971 240Z
I noticed this 240 sitting with 4 flat tires and covered with dust in a guys garage about 3 blocks from my house. He had owned it for 17 years but was ready to reclaim some garage space. I drove it the three blocks home. -

What do you all think about this 240z
Amen Brother! Here in the Rust Belt you California guys make us sick! When we evaluate rust, we are really looking for holes left behind after the rust!! Qwik240's Z looks like a pretty good car to start with to me. Don't give it away Qwik! Around here, (mid-west) you'll do a lot of searching to find a solid 240. 26th Z has a car I can relate too!

First drive in the Z, Backfiring and sputtering.
First, I don't claim to be an expert here by any means. But, I did have the exact same problem when I bought my 71 which had been sitting at least five years. It ran great on new plugs but would foul them in about 5 to 10 miles start backfiring and lose power. I bought the carb tape from Z therapy and, even though I had no idea what I was doing, managed to clean the carbs out, set the floats and needles correctly and get the chokes working properly. About four hours later, the difference was amazing. The guys at Z therapy sent me a couple float bowl gaskets with the tape and were great help. My advice is to buy the videos and go through the carbs.

Color Choice
I'll have to leave that part to someone else :stupid:

Color Choice
Heres the quick easy process I've used in Photoshop to play with color: 1st, say your Z is blue, select all of the blue areas (I use the magic wand tool which selects areas of color similar to the color where you click....you can keep adding more areas by repeated clicking while holding down the shift key until you have your entire cars painted surfaces selected). You can play with the "tolarance" setting to determine much color deviation is selected with each click. Your precision here is limited only by your patience. In the attached example, I spent about 1 minute selecting my color area....I'm not very patient :nervous: ! This explains why my attached example is not real exact around some of the edges. 2nd, go to the "image menu", select "adjust" and then "variations". From this dialog box, its pretty self explainatory. Just click on the displayed choices. It does require repeated clicks in any one color direction to attain a major color change. While you have your selected area set up, you can also play with the other adjustments under the "image" "adjust" menu to change things like brightness and contrast. In any case you can do something like what I have attached here in about 15 minutes. Probably more if its your first time or you are a perfectionist!

Color Choice
Nate, If your going to keep it forever, paint it red - the color you really want! If your going to sell it soon, keep it the original color. Then again, "re-sale red" might be a good choice there too! Bottem line, if you like one color best - thats what you should paint it.

Please send $$ my new Z is broken!
I am having the work done. My mechanical skills end with more minor repairs. I do however have some shop manuels for the car - I would prefer not to open them with my own greasey fingers though! Just want to make sure everything gets done the should while the car is opened up.
