Not be able to engage any gear after power drive
Hi, folks, I got big trouble again. When I drove my 72 240z first gear as fast as 45miles per mile(probable over 6000rpm with my 72 240z with '83zx 5 speed trans and r-200, 3.5 or 3.7 differential from 80s zx). I heard fairly loud bang sound from the engine or trans area. I don't know exact where, but I saw small amount of smoke coming from somewhere throught the vents from hood or side/front of the hood. I also smelled burning rubber like odor too. I thought engine belt burned out or someting. The engine runs and I hope it is OK, but I am not be able to engage any gear. Only stuck in the one gear, but I can drive and drove home by using 4th gear without changing any gear. I can change a gear if I turn ignition off. Do you folks think any thougt? The trans is rebuilt on 20.000 miles and the clutch is from either 1988 300zx 2x2 or center force cluth. I replaced clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder recently .jaynez31:cry:

MSD 6A Installation with 280zx distributor and 240Z tach
From your drawing, red and white wire from MSD ignition meet black outlined box between the MSD ignition box and tach adaptor. Is B and C stand for distributor? Please see my question: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13347 thanks,

After market Tach into 78 ignition and MSD setting
I just bought a after market tach(autometer # 2301) and can't figure that out the violet colored wire and white colored wire. Privious owner installed tach adapter twice and failed it. Now I bought after market tach and would like to install it my 72 240 with 78z ignition and distributor with the MSD 6AL. My current system is verry much like this: http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/pdf26.pdf and the autometer's instruction, page one, figure B: http://hp.autometer.com/instruction_download/instructions/468h.pdf 1. What's shall I do the "Violet" wire. When I looked two of the wires(Green and Violet) from MSD ignition box which connect to the 78 z distributor. By the drawing from the Autometer's webpage 1, figure B, only the green wire from MSD ignition box to the Autometer's tach. What's happed the Violet wire? Do I connect the violet wire to the distributor? or Will I not use it? 2. How to deal with the "white" wire from MSD ignition box. From classic z car site indicates the white wire from MSD connected to the Tach adapter, then connect to the B/W or red wire from MSD ignition box. I went down and check my car, the white wire is cut off and does not connect any wire what so ever. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13085 3. Do I connect any wire from MSD to the distributor? Violet wire?, red wire, or none? I think I explain my problem clear hopefully. jaynez31 just like my 240z, I am from Japan too, what's heck.

How about Kameari. Well, the name "Kameari" made me laugh. Kame means "turtle" and Ari means someting like "posses", "have", "advantage" or "presence". It is also sound "Mameari" in Japanese funny too. http://www.logic.ne.jp/asi.htm jaynez31 72 240z with l28 mild cam and bunch of modsROFL

what is safty water temp for cylinder/engine?
I just went to buy the candy thermometer or cooking thermometer from Pay less drug store. It was 4.99 dollars. I just put it in the radiator which showed 190 degree even the gage in the z car indicats 225-230 degree(well over the middle line). When the thermostat open/moving the water, then the candy themometer showed little over 190 degree. I think this overheat issue is over.

what is safty water temp for cylinder/engine?
Oh well, Since I changed water pump, thermostat, and 3 core radiator, my 240z (with L28, triple weber, header, comp cam) dropped water temp from the 240 degree range to 210-225(just past middle line, I would say 60%-70% of the gage. I still have not check the water temp by the cooking thermometer or cheep water temp gage. Is current temp(205-225 degree) safe for my engine? jaynez31

Ignition timing for 240z with L28, MSD, triple weber, 78 ingiton and distributor
Oh, well, thank you for the advice. I still have a couple questions. Since my z has 78 ignition and distributor with triple weber, I do not see vacume advance line from weber to distributor vacume advance port/inlet. Should I find a vacume outlet/port from triple weber cab? Shall I leave it alone or plug it. I checked timing yesteraday, I noticed that privious timing setting was way retearded/too advanced. I did not remember, but I shold say the distributor adjusting bolt was far end of the engine side of the adjusting worm shaped groove/hole. I shold say 30-40 ATDC or BTDC? I am not cofortable enough playing around the idle adjusting screws to do above procedure discribed by victor. I probably get help from a shop people or special shops. Or after I purshase the books of Weber Cab and Datsun manual to know more basics. Until the day, Hopely I can drive my car which this eveing I set ingition timing by 14 degree on the timing light with white mark on the crankshaft pully which aligned with the triangle shaped sign from the engine block. Compare with privious timing setting(the distributor adjusting bolt was far end of the engine side of the adjusting worm shaped goove/hole side of the distributor) whcih compared with 14 degree BTDC setting was the distributor adjusting bolt was settled middle of the the adjusting worm shaped goove/hole side of to the distributor cap. This setting is better idling and running than before. Notably the water temp dropped about 10-20 degree, but it is still high between 200-230 degree range. I am going to get new/used radiator this weekend, then I might be able to do the full timing set up which victor explained me. thank you jaynez31 Just like my 240z, I am from Japan too, what's heck. Ignition timing for 240z with L28, MSD, triple weber, 78 ingiton and distributor
Hi, I am again, I have to live with Classic Z car, huh. Anyway, I am dificult finding corrent timing setting for my 240z has various mods: 1. the engine is L28 from 280zx with P-79 which proted and performance cam. 2. MSD ingition box with blaster coil with 8mm taylor wires. 3. '77 ignition and distributor(from privious owner's recipt) and 4. Motor sport header and 45 triple weber with cannon. The L28's timing is 8B-10B. How do such mods affect timing? It may be bit advance or retard? It might help my over heating issue too. ____________________________________ 240z rocks

Ohh, folks, thank you for important feed backs. I feel way better the 240z. Yes, the radiator looks old and some fins(I don't know what's call the small vents fins are damaged which air may be hard to go through. OK I will buy the 3/4 core radiator probably this week end. I will let people know what would be happen. __________________________________________ just like 240z, I am from japan too, what's heck.

 Ok, After I installed the thermostate, I just took a test drive about an hour. During free way, the needle in the gage points 75% or 3/4 of the water temp gage between 120-250 marks. So, I caluculate 220 degree. Tonight, Solano county's current tempuraure is 83 degree. while city and idling, the needle points 85-90 % of between 120-250 the water temp gage marks, I would say235-240 degree, but it did not reach the 250 degree(redline) which yesteraday did over 250 degree. During the idling, engine did not stall. It is better than not install new thermostat (170 degree open). I hope someone has an advice to reduce the water temp, I would say, will 180 degree. thanks, jaynez31

over heating
Ok, folks, I picked up the thermostate from the local nissan dealer this morning, and I just installedf the thermostate this evening. I will take a test drive tonight or tommorow evening due to my job. Anyway, couple weeks ago I (muffler shop) installed 2feet long resonetor just below the down pipe or 3 inch from the end of the header. It might constrict air flow, but should not be over heat right? Another thing I need to add: 1. motor was remanufactured by Nissan only 25.00-30.000 miles on by Japan car club in Dublin. Head is P 79 and performance cam installed by Japan car club. when I looked the thermostate housing was pretty rusty. The radiator is looks old. I replaced water pump 3 weeks ago. the fan is plastic and works OK. Anyway, hopely, the thermostate may fix the overheat problem. ---------------------------------------- just like 240z, I am from Japan too, what's heck

hi all, after I installed clutch slave and master cylinder, my 72z runs again. However, I encountered another problem, Over Heating. After I drove my 72z (with L28 and 5 speed), I realized that water temp gage's needle showing above 3/4 which over 200 degree while driving highway about an hour with 90 degree Solano county, California. Then I drove through the city traffic(stop and go), the needle in the water temp gage showing almost 250 degree. When I came home, water temp indicated about 250 degree. So, I parked the car left the idel running the car to see any leak from cooling system, I did not see any steam coming from anywhere but the water temp went over 250 degree, then engine gredually stalled. Since my Z does not have Fan Shroud and radiator overflow bottle might caused over heat? or radiator or thermostate need to replace? Fan shroud not being installed? Air/fueld mixture? Timing advance(my z does not have advance vacume)? What would you recommend? Shall I go for Electric Fan? or getting shrud? My next question is: What's year's radiator shall I order? my 72 model year or my engine year 79-83 zx radiator? jaynez31

how to adjust the slave cylinder and master cylinder
I just installed second slave cylinder(Nobco) and clutch hose to my 72Z after I installed first (it is turned out defective; broken bleeding pin) slave cylinder a week ago from another part shop(NAPA), and I am waiting to install 1972 240z master cylinder from the other parts shop. When I bought and installed second slave cylinder(1972 240z) is exact idenical slave cylinder from my 72z which I removed an old one, so I assume that current hydroric system may be stock(1972 240z). I thought my 240z has equipped with different hydroric system because privious ownder told me that he installed the Center Force II or '86 300 z clutch assembly. This is my questions: 1. How do I idintify if my '72 has equipped with '86'turbo clutch assembly with 2x2 fly wheel or the center force II clutch, or the stock clutch assembly(83zx or 240 z)? 2. how to adjust the salve cylinder? My slave has adjusting nuts. Does clutch fork needs free play or no movement between push rod between clutch fork? 3. Do I have to replace hydroric system along with L-28 hydroric system or 86 300zx turbo hydroric system along with clutch assembly? thank you jaynez31 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am from janan and live in California, just like my z car. what years' clutch master & slave cylinder for my 240z(L28 with late 5 speed trans)?
Yes, my 72 has bigger clutch (according the recipt which privious owner kept a recipt said, clutch assembly installed from '86 300zx turbo and 2x2 flywheel). So, I was speculating the clutch hydroric system also converted to 1980's 280zx along with L28 and 80's 280zx conversion with '86 300zx turbo with 2x2 flywheel. However, yesteraday I downloaded from the "Kragen Auto's" '72 240z's master cylinder and slave cylinder's pages pictures indicate that my '72 z has identical to the pictures from Kragen Auto's. http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDetails.asp?SourceArea=SHOP&SourcePage=SEARCHRESULTS&MfrCode=TRQ&MfrPartNumber=CM39102&PartType=234&PTSet=A http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDetails.asp?SourceArea=&SourcePage=SEARCHRESULTS&MfrCode=BAR&MfrPartNumber=0721258&PartType=236&PTSet=A So, I belive current clutch hydroric system in my 72 z is an original hydrolic system or stock 1972 (?????) with '86 turbo clutch assembly with 2x2 flywheel which connected with 1980 280zx 5 speed trans?????? Is it possable? This trans and enine swap was performed by the Japanese car club(formaly Z clinic) in Dublin, California about 4 years ago by privious owner. So, I called the Japanese car club, but that number reached a guy in a private residence.

what years' clutch master & slave cylinder for my 240z(L28 with late 5 speed trans)?
Hi people, I have question about my 72 240z. Yesterady, I realized that my clutch did not engage and found the clutch slave cylinder was leaking. Today, I bought and replaced for the 280zx(79-83) slave cylinder from the NAPA(parts store), and the 280 zx(79-83) master cylinder rebult kit into my old master cylinder. After I installed master and salve cylinder, leaking fluid from bleeding bolt and the master cylinder(or probably reservoir which I did not close the lid of the reservor while pumping the clutch. When I compared old slave cylinder which slight different from 1983zx which I bought from the NAPA's slave cylinder I installed today, well almost same except the push lod does not have adjustment nuts and angle of the bleeding bolt and fluid inlet is less shaper. Anyway I am going to buy a slave cylinder and master cylinder. I need to know what's year's master cylinder and slave cylinder I need to buy my 240z (L28 with late 5 speed '79-'83 transmission with 1986 300zx turbo clutch assembly and 2x2 flywheel which privious owner installed). Despite those set-up, I see the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder seem like original 240z equippment. Well, I have slave cylinder here in my room. I read "11/16 NABCO Japan" and back of the slave cylinder "MH". I need advice sooo bad. jaynez31
