Datsun vs Datsun?
Truth is that zed's are seen as chicks cars by blokey aussie males that wouldn't be caught dead in anyting other than a V8 ute or a 4 door sedan. (interestingly enough the first ute was conceived by a woman and built for her by ford, so i guess utes are chick cars too). If you've seen the movie Chopper (i only saw it on foxtell a couple of weeks ago), the part when he says he gets photos from all sorts of people outside bojangles niteclub, he says "photos from homosexual types" and the scene is of a guy with bleached short hair infront of a 260z 2+2. hmmm. Maybe they drive sedans to try and be blokey. Who cares. I dont. I bought a datsun 240z originally (in high school) because it was cheap and had all the features of more expensive sports cars like IRS, and they look so cool. I just bought another one because they look so cool! and i wanted a project car to have some fun with. The fact that they are only going to appriciate in value is good too. Dont get me wrong, I didnt buy it as an investment, anyone that thinks cars are an investment needs their head examined. they cant appriciate in value quick enough to offset the cost of ownership unless you stick it in a shed and never ever drive it anywhere. With cars, it's personal I like: 1600's, 1200 coupes, 240z's, (hate 2+2's), VH-VK Commodores, hk monaro's,xy falcon sedans, xb falcon coupes (xb sedans are ugly, and so is every other falcon except the newest one- wow ford finally got it right again), didn't like 240k's ny they've grown on me, i could go on and on, but i wont. No flames please.:classic: And now for something completely different. I've seen 4 350z on the road all of them were concept colours 2 lemans sunset and 2 platinum silver. What? people dont want a red, black, blue or white one?

Is This TOO Much?
4 barrels for 6 cyls, the maths dont add up. Kidding aside, the is 650 probably too much carb for a 2.4 liter engine, unless it has a wild cam in it, even then it probably still is, but i'm no expert, i've just read a lot of car mags. L24 engines did come with downdraft carbies. The skyline/240K for example.

mine's R34 skyline video!
goto www.divx.com com and...ah forget it, just click here and save to your computer. the latest div x. 5.0.3 (3mb) if that dont work, try older versions of divx (4 and 3).

VIN/Engine number discrepancies
So the only place you saw a year for the car was on the rego papers? Whats the compliance plate say? I expect its just a stuff up in licencing department records by some data entry person. Notice how the '3' and the '6' are right next to each other on the number pad. The only way to get an approximate year of manufacture for an Aussie Z is to check the date on the compliance plate, which will tell you (month/year) when the car arrived in australia. Then you have to guess how long it took to get here on a boat, and how long it sat around in Japan before being loaded onto the boat. (yeah i'm guessing this. I asked this in another post about when compliance plates are fitted and what the date meant (build or compliance date) but havent had any replies, so untill anyone knows different i expect it happens like that). Hey Gee How do your's and your friends chassis numbers compare. Is yours lower than his? 2/72 HS30 10527 MPH

Guess the engine
The answer is Toyota 2JZ Well thats what it looks like. Its had the twin turbos replaced by a single turbo by the look of it, anf the intake side looks modified also. It was in the members gallery somewhere.

Fairlady Roadster sighting in WA. OZ.
I was on the red cat bus today near the waca stopped on wellington street, and saw a red fairlady roadster drive through the lights down plain street. 1AXA something was the licence no. Now that is something you dont see everyday in perth. (I can just imagine the replys from the americans reading this post...whats a waca? cat bus? )

Air Dams, Spoilers and Exhaust Fumes
Spoilers wont reduce any fumes getting into the car. tho only way to do it is fix the seals. My had a problem its fumes. I knew it when i bought it because i could smell it when i test drove it. I bought it anywan because i wasn't going to drive if before stripping and rebuilding the car. The cause was loose tail lights, and a missing tail light seal on the light above the exhaust pipe. You could try gaffa taping up the rear hatch, tail light pannels and tail lights untill its air tight. very ugly but it would work. Just keep a knife and a roll of gaffa tape in the car incase you have to open the rear hatch while you are out...... ...Well thats what you tell the police it's for when they stop you. You end up with a low pressure area behind the car where the exhaust is so it gets sucked along with you. and if you have your windows open it also creates a low pressure in the car which sucks the exhaust into the car. Which is in part why people get sucked out of aeroplanes if a window breaks.

Screen Names - Where Do They Come From?
From a comedy skit/sketch show. There was a reoccuring skit with a guy in camouflage gear that was called Mr Camouflage. When i stated uni about 5 years ago I got a emaill account and had to think of a name for it, because i didnt want to be craig smith onebillion-fivethousand-eighthundered-and-seventy two. And Mr Camouflage sprang to mind.

Ignition Assembly
Yep but not what your thinking. some lowlife stole my old car (not a 240z), and when i found it i had to hotwire it to get it started to get it back home. And i've pulled my 240z apart and had a good look at the locks and switches.

ABOUT TO BUY THIS 240Z.. What u Reckon?
Just Buy it. For $4200 its a pretty good buy if it's not too rusty to start with. If it looks like a metal patchwork quilt on the otherhand....maybe give it a miss. Mine cost $4200. not much rust, repainted 5 years ago, rust cut out (tiny bit where frame rails end, some in sills), Engine needs new rings (rebuild) Paint job is crap and need strip and repaint to find and remove all the bog and surface rust. (photos in my gallery) so yours sound like a better buy for the same price. My interior wasn't too bad though. Drive down with a friend and drive it back. Or get someone to transport it that doesnt have issues with it being lowered. A mate had a REALLY LOW supra shipped by train from adelaide to perth with no dramas, so i dont see that it should be a problem

should i do this engine swap?
If all thats wrong with it in a noisy valve train then dont rebuild it. If it's not burning oil and making lots of smoke then the engine really shouldnt need a rebuild. Unless your big end is knocking which means worn bearings. The valve clearances are adjustable. All you have to do is take off the valve cover (the alloy thing thats says "NISSAN OHC") to get to addustments. Not a lot experiance needed. Even if you got a garage to do it, it would be a lot cheaper than rebuilding an engine. I have to rebuild my engine because its smokin' like a steam train.

Interior switches/ 71 240z HSL30
Hey, thats my car. Its a 72. It has the imprints in the plastic for switches and lights, but none are fitted.

Rs30/rls30
Never got the 280z in australia either. We got the 260z right up untill '77 untill the 280ZX came out in in '78 or '79.

hehe all original 71 240Z
Hey my car has no vents on the hatch. Everything about it is series 2, badges, tool box compartments, steering wheel, center console. But I onlu have a vent hole in the left rear pannel. The right pannel has the badge, but no hole behind it, and no its not bondo's up, i can see the back of the pannel,as i've pulled the interior out. Personally I think the whole pannel might have been replaced to fix some accident damage, as its a bit banged up in there. I suspect the its the same story with the other car you mention. Wont know for sure till i strip the sheel back to metal. Australian cars have to have the chassis number stamped into the chassis (Duh!) as well as it being on the nissan ID tag, and on the Compliance plate (the goverment makes the car maker fit these to show it complys with australian design rules). Dont US cars have the chassis number on the chassis also? The Haynes manual shows a picture of the chassis number on the dash, visible through the windscreen. I still recon the ad is misleading by stating its a 1 owner car when clearly it must be a 2 owner car.

Etch Primer or Greyl Primer?
I Think on any car over 20 years old it is essential. especially if its been repainted , or had some smash repairs. I have stripped original paint off pannels that looked fine to find rust under the primer. Sure its only little specks, but leave it a while and it will eat a hole throught the pannel. Anyway my car had been repainted and i want to strip it to remove all the filler thats under the paint, and remove all the rust that's hiding under the 5 year old paint job the previous owner did. So whats involved in etching with Phosphoric acid? and what is the advantage in etching the metal? What about epoxy etch primer? Are there restrictions as to the type of top coat you use over epoxy primer? The last car I painted, I just stripped, primed, hight filled and sanded then painted in Acrylic. But i had some kind of reaction with some anti rust killer stuff that i think was phosper based. So i had to use a barrier coat over the treated areas. I wanna do it Right as I plan on owning this 240z for a very long time.

hehe all original 71 240Z
The bumpers looks normal to me. Funny how people think that all the cars came out of the factory one after another in order of their chassis numbers. I'm sure that most of the time they did, but every now and then some hiccups had to occur. And there wasnt a sharp cut off when they said right all series 1 style cars are finished, now we are going to build series 2 cars. So you will find cars that were produced in the grey areas inbetween. Ok having played devils advocate, i aggree that this car isn't a little old man's car that i found in a shed type car that its represented to be. He's had this some time and its the produce of his restoration attempts. Badges? he might have put them on because the others were missing. $3K respray? there is overspray all over the strut tops, and over the door catch. The rear pannels have been painted matt black. How can he say its a 1 owner when he is the second owner? wouldnt that make it a 2 owner.
