The drawstring is used to install the wire. It's too long of a run to just push the wire through, you need to use the string to help it around the corners and seams. The rod in the seat back is attached to the rod in the cover with hog rings. This difines the crease under the headrest. just doesn't look right without it

Gromit, Z car lug pattern is 4X114.3, AKA 4X4.5. There are "Steelies" out there that fit. Some are even inexpensive. Some the racer crowd like the stock car style steel racing wheels. Not my Cup o Tea, but to each their own. Good luck on your search.
