The best Z carrier
This has been my search as well. I wanted a vintage Nissan truck to haul my roadster. Unfortunately, it's my conclusion that the early Nissan trucks didn't have the mass or power to be an adequate car carrier. At least the U.S. Market Imports. The most likely candidate would be the medium industrial truck Nissan Caball. But that truck never made it here. BRE had the solution. They received a Hino Truck from Nissan for the team. They yanked out the 4 banger diesel and installed a 500 cu in Cadillac motor!

Happiness is an Exhaust Tone
The muffer shop fabricated the whole set-up. Driving the 5 miles to his shop with an open header was fun! I just did this. Unfortunatly, I have no way to transfer the file from my lap-top to my desk top until I get to work tomorrow and return my lap-top to it's docking station. Until then, perhaps Mike can tell me where to upload it. You bet Keith! Maybe someday I'll post something to the correct discussion group?

Happiness is an Exhaust Tone
Another of my check Items has just been completed. One of my beefs against my car was that it was way too quiet. Another, was the ugly, rusted stock exhaust manifold, contrasting all the lovely replated carburator parts, polished intake and cross-over tube. One Jet-Hot coated MSA Header and a 2 - 1/2 exhuast system ending with a "Super Turbo" (?) muffler and a chrome straight tip has cured these issues. I asked the guys at Morse Muffler of Burbank if they could steal the exhaust note off of a Ferrari and put it on my car. Well, They did one hell of a job! Driving back on the 5 freeway was a gas! It really sounds nice pulling away from a stoplight. I'm soo happy! I have a sports car that sounds like one! Wanna lose 30 pounds of ugly fat? Throw away that pig-iron manifold!

LHD 240Z in 1969 TOKYO auto show
Wow! Those cars look much better with the smaller chrome bumpers compared to the giant rubberbabybuggiebumpers their U.S. counterparts were equipped with. I never thought the 120Y could look so good. The 610 is downright sexy with the Euro bumper. The Cedric taxi is very cool. It's also regrettable that the US didn't get the 67 - ? 100a. That car was a jewel of simplicity. I think it's neat to see someone at a car show proudly displaying his F-10 cherry!

What Now?!!
There's a short. I know, not very helpful. The dash lights not coming on until the brake lights are applied? Usually, that would indicate the dash is grounding through the brake lights hot side. get on your back with a flash light and check the wires from the brake switch. pay close attention to where they pass around the pedal box. No guaranties - just a WAG. Where Enrique when you need him? I've been following his elec. troubleshoots with attention.

To Do List 2003
1. Headers and an exaust system that has a touch more volume. 2. More engine compartment detailing including heater hoses, all new gromets (especially the nasty wiper gromet!), even more replated hardware. 3. Replace the poorly installed 1/2 dashcap with a full cap or go all out and take my spare dash to JustDashes for the real thing. 4. Euro front and rear bumpers

Wheels and Tires
Bill, How much do you drive? Daily? Weekend mountain road monster? AutoX? I've run Kuhmo Victoracer's. Lasted a year some AutoX, mostly Angeles Crest and Mt. Palomar fun runs, few commutes. They were great. I'm now running Sumitomo HTR Z. They're not bad at all. With a 160 treadwear rating, they're harder than the Kuhmo's but still too soft for a commuter. This doesn't bother me much as I live 4 miles from work.

What's all this buisness about ice? You guys are crazy! I was born in Florida (Miami) and now live in Los Angeles. I know all there is to know about ice: You need lots of it to make Margaritas and Daquires. If you have an old frige, you've got to defrost it. It's good for ice tea. My best Girlfreind used it in interesting ways.:classic: Before a party, you should buy extra bags of it. I don't have any idea way you guys should be driving on it. sounds strange and kinda dangerous to me!

Z production dates
I'm glad you posted this info, Alan. When I was disassembling my 72, I found 2 paper slips, 1 small one, sandwiched under the pedal box and a much larger one, nestled above the right rear fender well. They are both tables, printed with Japanese characters with the round blue date stamps that you describe. I guessed that they were assembly instructions for a HLS30 U.S. market car. I've been intending to scan them to share them with you all.

The heck is this?
Why don't you unplug it and see what stops working? Then you'll be able to be the club's highest expert on "Red Button Fuctions"! I've got my money on the "Fuel Pump Reset Theory", myself.

New to this
Your dedication makes me feel ashamed for scrapping out my last Z because it was a little rusty! Oh yea, and dented. Your car looks great though. Never feel guilty to get a good deal on those Webers. Believe me, The money you save, will be spent 10X over if your Z lust takes complete root. Take it from me. I can't tell you how much I spent in the last three months. Mainly, because I wont admit it to myself! But, It's worth the cost for the smile on my face every time I walk up to my Z! If your looking for help, support, acknowledgement, sympathy, you've found it here. Where others might tell you you're crazy or sick, We'll just say- Go, Baby, Go!

LHD 240Z in 1969 TOKYO auto show
Most of what I had planned to write was covered by Nate, but I'll add a few points. It's hard to "Nail Down" the general American opinion on the Datsun brand. There are many who reflect Nate's encounter with the "Didn't Nissan buy Datsun?" camp. These are going to be people with no general automotive knowledge. There's a large population will be those who remember the cheap, high quality, small car, that was a blast to drive and they still wish they owned it. Most of these folks are the 40 to 50 age group who received a PL510, KLB110, 240, 260, 280, truck to the B210 Fastback (120Y) as their 1st car. Heck, My own Brother-in-law waxes nostalgically over his former F-10 (Cherry)! Then there are the Auto Snobs, who only know it's not a high priced European luxury ride and therefore no better than scrap. < I work next to one of these guys. He keeps telling me to junk my Datsuns and buy a "Real" car. The enthusiasts are a very small population, both the former enthusiast, who street raced 510's as a kid, and the current enthuiast (who...me?). I'll group them together and we'll still to to small a group to count. Even smaller is the Road race fan who remembers the mighty Datsun dominance of the late 60's and 70's. Even the English car fans remember this, albeit rather sourely!

Fairlady Z??? what the?
The Story I heard was, It was Mr. K who was responsible for the sports cars not being sold as Fairladies in the states. He fought with the home office over the Bluebird emblems in the with the 59 models. Replacing them, fresh off the boat with "Datsun" emblems from another car. When the SP212 Fairladies came over, they were so few of them he didn't bother. In late 62, when the SP310 (1500) fairladies came over, he made sure that the emblems never made it to the dealer's floor, replacing them on the while the cars were still at the docks. By mid 63, He finally was able to convice Japan to ship without the "cutesey" names. So now, Fairlady, Bluebird and Cherry are not names most Americans associate with with Sports cars, Small sedans and sub-compact cars. It's my opinion that it's our loss.

Chrome Drip Rails - Where?
Mike, They are Stainless, not chrome. That's good news, If you can find an un-dented set, you can polish them up good as new.

Need some quick help tuning SU's
lower your floats but make sure they are the same height for both carbs. Start your idle mix at 2 1/2 turns. Balance your air flow, the set the mixture for the highest idle. re-balance the carbs. No garantees at all that this will help. The only real way to set up SU's is to set your points, timing, plugs and valve clearences before you start. And have the correct tools to set them with. If your keeping your Z, Buy a Unisyn, timing light and feeler guages at the very least.

keep/sell my z? value?
Yes they do! We've got a good cross section of Z loonies on the site (thank goodness!). You've been blessed. It's rare that a new member starts such an active thread. I don't think you need to give much credence to Sean's warning (after all, he is French ). I'm pretty sure of you safety in this crowd. Although, you seem to be able to handle yourself well. I don't know what area of California you're in, But if your in the L.A. area, let me endorse Mike at Sunset Z. you can find his link in our links section. He's a dedicated Z mechanic, who I believe will fix your ride without giving the ride. When I visit his shop, there's usually a ZX there receiving therapy.

Advice on painting a 240?
Denny, If your'e going to want to drive a complete Z to a reputable body shop to respray factory orange, They're going to want 5 ~ 7 grand. You can better this condition by stripping her down your self before dropping her off - bumpers emblems, trim, antenna, lights, headlight buckets, rear panel, grill and glass. The body shop's price is not unfounded. Good paint, and the rest of the materials to do all the steps for a proper paint job will cost the shop close to $1,000 to start with. Skilled bodymen and sprayers cost $40 ~ $50 an hour depending on their wages and Bennys. Rent on the shop property, liences and , in California, Enviromental permits eat away at the profit margin. There's little left for the shop owner after all of that. Lower your costs by doing the labor. The very best deal is finding a pro sprayer that works on the side and have him/her tell you how to prep the car and what materials to buy. But, he's going to spray it (Don't tell the Air Board) in his back yard and may get some dust in the job.

Better Late than never?
Mike was good enough to hold a gallery folder open for me to place the shots I took from the 2001 Classic Datsun Show, at the Deer Creek Winery. It took me a while to find the CD that had the photos on it. After finally cleaning my home office, it turned up. I hope you all enjoy them, that is, if you can make it through all of the 113 photos! If you have any info on the cars pictured, please leave a comment. If the photo is of your car, feel free to copy it for your use, in any way you please. Here's the link to start you down memory lane. click here
