Todd, Wrt differences between early 240Z and '73 rear bumpers, I was going on the info on the Black Dragon ad above (only applies to 70-72 240Z) and from info on MotorsportsAuto related to their Carbon Fiber Rear Bumper, 70-72 240Z (Motorsport! Carbon Fiber Rear Bumper, 70-72 240Z - The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts) "Note: These bumpers can be used on 73 to early 74 Z's, however you must modify a bracket to fit. You can have your own brackets made from scratch, or possibly the easiest method is to purchase early 240Z bumper brackets, and modify them to fit (significant modification necessary)." So there appears to be a difference. Anyone installed an early 240Z rear bumper on a '73?

I've already installed an early 240Z front bumper on my '73. With the offering from Black Dragon above, I was wondering if anyone has installed early 240Z rear bumpers on a '73? If yes, is there fabrication required or do I just pick-up a set of early 240Z rear bumper mounting brackets and bolt it up?

Mike - We all appreciate your efforts keeping this site up and running. Thank you!

Casey - I actually was back in Ontario last year and dropped by to see Laverne (22yrs after I bought my 240Z from him!). He has quite the collection of Z's!

That's my green '73 240Z in pic #141. Hope to really meet you guys this year. -
I've owned my 240Z for 23yrs (it was my first car). Here's the Auto Trader ad from 1991 that led me to my 240Z: Here's my 240Z as it looked before it was lowered, side molding removed, front airdam added, new hood, early 240Z front bumper swapped, painted and new 16" wheels added:

Very nice! I have the 16x7 Rewinds (graphite with polished rim) with 205/50-16s Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec on my lowered 240. Also got them from Discount Tire. Going from 14" wheels with crappy tires, this was by far the best performance upgrade I've made to my car.

Goob - There's a few of us ClassicZ guys who live inside the beltway (I'm in McLean). There's also the Northern Virginia Z Car Club (check the Facebook site) that you might want to consider joining for club discounts and events (Eiji the owner of Datsun Spirit is an active club member). Also, if you haven't been out to Katie's Cars & Coffee in Great Falls, VA on a Saturday morning, you really should check it out. I'm there pretty much every Saturday from 0630-0900 with my Z, when the weather's good. Drop me a PM and I can provide more details.

I just installed a system in my Z. This was the first install I've done, but I am very happy with the results. To give you a hand, we're going to need some more info: - what speakers do you have installed? - do you have an amp installed?

Charles - Rather than overall height, your seated height (i.e. When seated on a flat surface, the distance from your butt to the top of your head) will give a better indication of headroom. I'm 6'1" but have a long torso, so my seated height is approx 38". As mentioned above, I could wear a helmet in my car with the S2000 seats installed with minor adjustment to seat position. To see how you'd compare, take your seated height measurement and if it's close to or less than 38", you should fit with helmet also. Todd - I've driven with the seats for about seven months and love them and would never go back to stock. The seats are comfortable and so much more supportive than the old seats. When I drive, I now feel connected to the car. Love them! Carl - You're welcome.
-
I recently repainted all my emblems for a third time (~ten years and ~30,000 miles between repaints), using Tetsor's enamel model paint. Works well and much cheaper than replacing emblems.
-
In response to a query from Carl, 18 3/4" is the seat track width (i.e. distance between outer edges of the inner and outer seat tracks) for the S2000 seats.

Carl - 18 3/4" is the seat track width (i.e. distance between outer edges of the inner and outer seat tracks). I will update my S2000 seat swap post with this info.

56-1410 - K&N Custom Assemblies, Custom Racing Assembly direct from K&N Approximately 20yrs ago, I purchased K&N chrome air filter assemblies through MSA for my 240Z. Motorsport! K&N Air Cleaner, 70-72 240Z S.U. Carburetors - The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts I recently removed the filters to clean them and noted that the points where the screw rods that connect the front and rear plates of the chrome housings are attached to the rear plate, have cracked. Consequently the screw rods are loose, making installation very difficult (i.e. screw rods are out of position and move around) and also allowing air to enter the carbs through the cracks and around the ends of the screw rods vice through the air filters (siliconed as a temp fix). A secondary issue is that the chrome plating on the rear plates of both housings has corroded and looks really bad. So I checked the K&N website to see if I could purchase new chrome housings as the filters are still good. Through the K&N website you can buy the filters or the complete assemblies (i.e. filters and chrome housings) but not just the chrome housings. So I sent an email to the K&N tech line asking if I could purchase two new chrome assemblies. After exchanging a few emails with one of their Product Specialists, K&N is shipping me two new chrome housings for my K&N filters, free of charge!!! I was so impressed with K&N's customer service that I had to post my experience on this forum.

Fred and Bill joined me at KC&C this morning. A red E-Type Jag parked next to my Z. In my opinion two of the best looking cars from the late 60's early 70's.

George - Thanks! Alex - Thanks for the offer to take pics of your tweeter install; however, I wan to keep the sound stage up front so I'll be keeping the tweeters in the upper dash area. I like the idea of flush mounting the tweeters in the metal panel at the base of the windshield but I'm hesitant to cut the panel. Anyone installed tweeters in this location? Anyone have a spare panel lying around?
-
I don't know if the panel is different or not. I have a 73 240z and I just had my driver side rear panel out last night (fiddling with antenna). To reinstall I removed the interior tail light panel, unbolted the hatch piston (hold open hatch with piece of wood) and loosened the quarter window panel (removed upper seat belt bolt and the first few trim rivets). Pull the carpet and underlay back, put the panel in with the bottom edge in first, watch to make sure the corner clears the strut tower, and maneuver the front edge of the panel under the quarter window panel, then carefully roll the panel up into place. You will have to bend / compress the panel a bit to clear the hatch strut mounting bracket, but it should flex enough. Hope that helps. Cheers,

So after 22yrs of just listening to my engine / exhaust and occasionally the radio through my cassette deck and 4" door speakers, I decided to upgrade to a modern audio system. This winter I had removed my interior and installed sound deadening (B-Quiet) and new carpet underlay (and Honda S2000 seats), so things had already been quieted down. I had never installed an audio system before, so I did a lot of research and decided on the following components (all parts purchased through Amazon.com, specs can be seen at Crutchfield links below): Pioneer DEH-80PRS for my head unit. My center stack had already been cut by previous owner to accommodate the cassette deck, so no further modification was required. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_13080PR...eh-80&skipvs=T My car already had 4" speakers in the doors (panels already cut), so I slightly enlarged the holes and replaced them with JBL MS-52Cs (5 1/4" components with crossovers). The previous owner had drilled holes in the doors for wiring (no grommets) and had merely placed the door speaker wires under the weather stripping (severely bent and insulation worn). I drilled through the body (took me a few days to work up the courage) at the near edge of the kick panels, installed grommets and placed heat shrink over the door speaker wires. I got the speakers installed in the doors, stepped back and realized, "Doh!" that my window cranks now hit the speakers, so I picked up some shorter billet aluminum cranks (they're OK). I mounted the crossovers on the kick panels and for now I have the tweeters sitting in the corners of the dash. I'm considering cutting the metal panel between the windshield and dash and flush-mounting the tweeters there. Anybody mounted tweeters in that metal panel? Pictures? http://www.crutchfield.com/p_109MS52...52C.html?tp=97 I didn't want to take up a ton of space in the hatch, wanted tight not booming bass and did not want to pull the sound stage to the rear by installing 6x9s in a taillight panel, so I decided upon a pair of JL Audio 6W3V3-4 6.5" subwoofers. I designed wedge enclosures using Sketch Up (a great free 3D drawing tool) and built the enclosures out of 3/4" mdf to the recommended sealed enclosure volume (Note: The following site has great information for designing speaker enclosures - Speaker Enclosure Volume Calculator). As a bonus I convinced the wife I needed to buy a router to cut the holes in the enclosures (Porter-Cable 2-1/4 HP VS Router Kit, Model 895PK). I glued and screwed the enclosures together; siliconed the corners and carpeted them. The enclosures are mounted by two L-brackets: one to a tail light panel mounting hole in which I cut threads and one to a hole I drilled and threaded in the rear of the wheel arches. They are very securely mounted and don't take up too much space. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1366W3V...-4.html?tp=111 I installed an Alpine PDX-F6 mounted vertically behind the passenger seat. The amp is rated @ 150 Watts RMS x4 channels (mine was tested and certified @ 173 Watts RMS per channel). http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500PDXF...ne-PDX-F6.html I'm no audiophile but I am extremely pleased with the results. I'm still fiddling with the head unit and the crossover points / slopes but the sound quality is awesome, the bass is tight and I have no problem hearing my music when cruising at 65mph with the windows down (I have lots of power!).

http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/wheels-tires-brakes-s30/23629-sportmax-002-15x8-konig-rewind-16x7.html#post326055 Post #36 has the details regarding my upgrade from 14x6 Iron Cross wheels to 16x7 Konig Rewinds with 205/50R-16 Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec tires. Note my 240Z has been lowered with Suspension Techniques Sport Springs, lowers the car approximately 1.5" over stock. I have had no issues with rubbing and this wheel tire combination fills the wheel arches nicely. This was the best performance ugrade I have made to my Z.

I decided to head up to Katie's again this morning. I got to see my first Bugatti Veyron in the flesh! Token Z pic at the end

Thanks Carl. Katie's is awesome! Every Saturday between 0630 and 0900 one to two hundred awesome cars and probably more than 600 people, show up. I've been there about five times and have seen every car I had on my wall as a teenager. They get the exotics, classics, muscle cars, hot rods, customs and imports. This link has some pics from last Saturday. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/open-zcar-discussion/49975-katies-cars-coffee-great-falls-va.html
