I had neglected to read the previous post before the pics and the details you mentioned. The gbox sounds like a second gear synchro to me very common as second get's the biggest workout. You could use GM Lube sold by holden for the box apparently it's good for the synchro's but to rebuild your looking at $600 - $2000 depending on how much detail you'd like to go into. The steering is very heavy in these cars but if it seems excessive I think replacing the ball joints and tie rod ends could help immensely. It could also be a stuffed steering rack ~$400 to replace that if you do it yourself. Those carbs will probably be the main reason for the car taking a while to warm up and run decently. At your age you do not wanna be fixing it every 10 mins especially if you are still studying or planning to. While the owner has a good set of parts to accompany the car you should be looking at the car more than it's sum of parts. Another thing I have to ask is do you really want a 2+2? Have you seen a 2 seater in person? I only ask because until I'd seen a 2 seater I had wanted a 2+2 I bought a 240z originally that required a bit of rust repair and while I regret selling it the reason for me doing so was $$$ I was trying to study and restore a car on a shoe string budget. Now I could have given it a half arse job on the paint but if your anything like I am and I believe do it once do it properly then your gonna spend big $$$ on fixing things. Anyway i have another 240z which i paid a decent amount of money for but I'd rather not disclose because I feel the car is worth alot more than I paid for it. This one however was a 2 owner car and I am the 3rd. It's been very well maintained and I can tell you it's a blast to drive. I have enjoyed it more than any other car I have owned to date. So my round about point is get something that costs a bit more but is in very good condition. For 6K you should be able to find a 2+2 that is in absolutely immaculate condition with no rust you will end up saving alot of money that way. As one of the others mentioned engines and gbox's go fairly cheap so mechanical things are cheap and easy. :classic:

IMHO if he wants more than $2000 don't even bother. The rust is fairly good considering what I've seen but honestly it's just another 2+2 not like there's a shortage of them going around. good ones yes but pay around $6k and you have yourself a great car. Depends if ur gonna race the car or not I guess. If so then it's not bad but if u want a clean street machine you'll be spending a bit of money tidying her up. The bog in the rear 1/4's is scary and you'd probably need to weld in new 1/4 panels as it's most like the result of an accident rather than rust. How is under the car the end of the chassis rails? infront of the rear wheels at the sill area have a poke around there they all get it there. The spare tyre area is another good 1 for rust causing fumes to get in. THe motor has the $^!# carbs but they there stock on a L26 in a 2+2 so can't really cry about that. At least it's fairly original that's a good thing you won't be hunting for too many spares. The bonnet don't look so bad so if you buy it and you want the vented bonnet maybe we can make a deal ;-).

In the forum where we have been posting pictures of ourselves I think someone commented that I either need an art consultant or am an art consultant. If the later I'd like to consult these ladies on the color scheme they've used and how I might improve it . Can't wait to see it at home the PC at Uni here is too dark

Jeff if your seriously that disappointed with the L-Engine could you at least do yourself a favour and try a set of side draft carbs first. I know you like the idea of a V8 and the whole downdraft carb business but you owe it to yourself to get a decent set of early SU's(Hitachi ones). Slap them back on get it professionally tuned at a Dyno(Rolling Road) and then make up your mind. :classic: Its just a suggestion anyway.

At first I thought I'd post a serious pic then I had a look through the collection of photo's I had and thought well nobody else has so I posted this 1. It was about 4:30 in the morning I had been up doing study for exams coming up and my friends 1 2 and 3 jimmy cans were on the table to help make study more fun hence the funny colored tongue and the wacked out look . I've also got another photo of me in the gallery i've had it there a while it's a bit more serious ;-).

I'm looking into a FI kit using a webber manifold that way I get six throttle boddies the mods will be very similar to your motor and I will be using a 76 degree camshaft. I am hoping to extract 180 rwhp or 130rwkw. Either that or stick with the SU's and see what comes of that.:classic:

You should be able to locate software to set up a forum for your club guys. Shouldn't be too difficult I'm coming up to Holidays as of Monday I may be able to help you out and maybe we can make it a sister club of the Classic Z forums. All you need to do is really pay for a domain name.

Any idea if non vented bonnets are the same price as the vented ones new?

I would also like to know this, I love simmons rims in both FR17's and B45's. I think the best place to find second hand ones is ozdat.com from time to time you see them for sale in their. At the moment I'm happy with the Superlites i got though. If I find a set of Simmons and I have the money I'll consider changing then.:classic:

Ok due to the fact that Z's go for values that are rarely consistent, it's hard to put an exact figure on what you'd get for it. I took a look at your photo's and I think photos are a great way of getting a good feel for a car but like all things you need to see it in person to make a real decision. The paint while red as you say isn't perfect and things like color coated window frames and bumpers will cost you in the originality department. I realise as you say it's not an original car, but previous examples have been shown to fetch higher prices the more original they are. This is mainly because the Z is becoming a rare breed of car in Australia and so many were changed and modified. The engine bay is looking good and clean too this is definately a plus for the car and the interior is fresh looking too so that is a bonus. I would usually consider a car like this to be priced around 6k however many people will more than likely offer you less than this. I've seen alot of well restored Z's modified or not go for a low price$$$ so as I say it's really hard to pin point a figure you could get alot more than 6 or you could get nothing over 4k. The body looks straight which is always good and rust isn't visible from the outside another bonus. I spose it depends where exactly the rust is and how bad. Dunno if that helps.

what are the door handles like the passenger one on mine is a bit loose is it in good working order and chrome still good? does it have any diamond stich material for the strut towers transmission tunnel etc.??? :classic:

I know exactly what it's like to have your car damaged as does Carl. I agree with Smokey you do have to be careful with the vintage machines. It's not easy to find someone who can repair it properly I had mine reveresed into recently and a bonnet + paint is gonna cost me around $2000 at the end I'm guessing because I just haven't been happy with the initial $1000 I outlayed on it. I'm gonna try get a friend to help me fix the old bonnet with a dolly and hammer and patience then get it painted by a friend who works at a body shop. Anyway I'm a bit off topic but my point is that a friend asked me the other day why I haven't been driving my car, my reply cause it's classic have to look after it and his attitude is it's a car drive it, having said that he outlayed $30k AUD on a new Intergra Type R to have a couple weeks later an old lady hit the side . I think if I were you I'd get another 1/4 panel welded in but you run the risk of someone not welding it in correctly. If the bonnet is damaged it might be cheaper to find a straight one than it is to try fix that. Maybe now you could go with 240z bumpers as oppose to finding 280z ones. They look nicer but you might be going for originality. Thanks for all the input guys, some great ideas in there. I just bought some heat shrink today so all I need now is time. I finish up school in approx a week or so and that will be it then holidays yay. So I will be able to have a play around then . I will try get some photo's together of the final result. I think it's a 10" sub btw. At the moment it's a package I bought together as time and money dictates I'll probably find the ultimate set up. Just want some music in the car haven't had a good stereo in a Z ever, always spending money on things I think are more important but I think it's good to make it comftable when your not feeling like racing everywhere .

Yep I was already thinking of making a MSA style copy for my speakers after I saw the price of the MSA one then convert to AUD$ forget it. I think your right i was gonna put the amp under the passenger side . For the subwoofer I'm thinking about the spare tyre well more and more .

Unfortunately I'm not in the US of A and MSA might be a bit more expensive than what I was looking to spend. I have thought about getting rid of the spare tyre but I'm a bit worried if I ever need to get home on a spare somewhere. There really isn't much room. And yes your correct fitting the new stereo through the existing slot will be tight and I don't wanna cut away at the centre heater cluster even a little. Same thing in the movie the big hit, With Mark Whalberg when he drives his yellow think it was a pontiac firebird. He busts out of his garage with it and then some time during the chase the car get's beat up as hell but in the next scene it's brand new. Obviously the order of the shots. . I think if i get time one day I'll try compile a list of Z car in movies. I'm frustrated though I saw a Z in a movie once a 280z with those peanut racing rims and it was going through a drive through somewhere but can't remember the name of the movie but I do remember hearing that Z engine .
