The link just worked for me as well. I posted the pic in #10, as did Carl in post #21. Here's how the CL ad ran: "Near mint, original condition 100k miles, excellent history/records, recent service/parts, never wrecked. Metallic blue over black. All accessories are period correct and were Datsun Dealer installed, Webers, factory air-conditioning, Appliance wheels. I installed an Ansa exhaust system and also period correct Uniroyal 205/14†Tiger-Paws. $35,000 firm. Call 503-997-2221, for details on why this particular 240Z is worth $35 Grand and why the classic 240Z is important and valuable to other Datsun 240Z owners. You 240Z folks won’t be disappointed. Ask about article/story on 240Z. 503-997-2221"

If you're going to ask that kind of money, why on earth would you just limit your advertising to the local Craig's List?

I was saddened to hear about Bill Renoad's passing after I read Dave Bond's posting back in June. He was the long time manager of Speedway Auto Wrecking and he was always very fair with me on the parts pricing. I bought a few parts off the blue 280Z with the white stripes shown in Post #6 of this thread (Speedway is also the same place with the pics of the '72 that was eventually crushed on Post #1 ). I went by Speedway today after an appointment I had in Greeley and it was all closed up. I also went to the yard to the west of Speedway -Erie Auto Salvage and bought a set of tail light harnesses out of the green '71 there (I've been looking for a good set for quite a while now). I spoke with the owner Ken Miller and asked him about Speedway and he said that the owner, Mr. Cochran sometimes opens it up on Saturdays, but the yard is still in limbo as Dave Bonds mentioned. Here are a few pics I took with my camera phone today of the green '71 while I was out at Erie Auto Salvage today before the tail light harnesses were pulled:

Bought wheels, need lugs. Thinking of converting.

I bought some nice lug nuts at Pep Boys for 2 of my 240Zs with the 14 inch slotted mags. They are made by Rally -model #90145 and are 12 mm x 1.25 and come in sets of four. -
Very interesting article. Thanks, Motorman. The article states that "They (Maistro) wanted to make sure they got the shapes and details right. It needed to be an unmodified car in very good to excellent condition." From the picture shown in the article, the car really didn't fit the description that they were looking for. It is slightly modified with the aftermarket side moldings, aftermarket wheels, front grill guard (and I would assume that it also has guard attached to its rear bumper as well). I realize that all of these items were "dealer optioned" at the time and the wheels are the classic slotted mags that are considered by a lot of us as "almost stock" and probably the single most forgiven aftermarket item on a 240Z. Thankfully, the finished die cast toy does closely represent what a '71 240Z looked like when it left the factory (if you ignore the bottom side of the toy). Don't get me wrong, it's not even close to the Franklin Mint version, but it looks pretty good for an inexpensive version. I just thought that there had to be a better model available to work from that was more stock. Just my 2 cents.

Places like Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, etc can be great places to find nice interior 240Z pieces because the cars lived such a short life due to the elements. One of the Zs my son and I bought about 6 years ago, the seller included several crates full of parts from a '72 240 that he had purchased and cut up for a donor car while he lived in Wisconsin for a short period of time. The car had a very nice un-cracked dash and a perfect console along with some other nice interior pieces. The odometer in the dash only had a little over 60k on it, but most of the other parts in the crates had quite a bit of rust on them and I'm not really sure why he kept those pieces. It's the exact opposite when buying an old Z in the dry, warm weather states such as SoCal or Arizona- very little rust, but the interiors tend to be pretty shot not only from the many years of use, but also the intense sunlight and the arid climate.

My son and I used to have a '71 918 Orange with black interior and the "D" hubcaps -I'll have to go to the Costco nearby and see if they have a couple of the die cast models there.

Thank you, Julio. My son and I miss the Orange Z since we sold it over 3 years ago.

I prefer the Dupont Chromo-based paints. My son and I used to have a '71 with 918 Orange. It was painted with a 2-stage paint process using Dupont Chromo-base paint and then the clear was applied. Here are a few pictures of the car shortly before we sold it in 2007:

Mike, I don't recall seeing one, but it could have been there and I just didn't see it. If I can find the contact info for the guy I sold the engine to, I'll ask him and post what he tells me in this thread. Steve

Carl, Thank you, I believe you have solved the mystery. As you stated in post #71 and what I had speculated in post #32, it was a replacement engine that was most likely stamped by the dealer.

Already covered in post #87 of this thread a few days ago: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=38906&page=4

Hi Carl, Please see the pictures below. As I mentioned, my son and I sold the engine over 2 years ago; but fortunately, we took a couple pictures of the engine's serial number and the block numbers back in 2004.

Looks like Kats opened up an old thread that hasn't seen any activity in over 5 years. However, it's certainly great to see all the new informative activity! Over 2 years ago, Darrel referred me to a local guy that was restoring his '70 240Z and was looking for an L24. I ended up selling him the engine that was the original subject of this thread. As noted multiple times in this thread, it was definitely an oddball engine (L24-60039 E31 9X04D) that had all the characteristics of an early L24 engine except for the high serial number. After looking at the engines that Carl listed in Post #60 and doing a comparison to the other engines, it couldn't be more clear that my old engine was an early engine that was stamped or mis-stamped with a later serial number.

I realize this is an old thread; however, it's very interesting. So from what Carl and others have been able to determine, there were only about 9000 NISSAN OHC 2400 valve covers manufactured (at least when you're talking about the North American market). That is not very many when you consider probably close to half of covers may not even exist any longer. I remember a couple of years ago, these valve covers in fair condition were selling on Ebay for only around $100.00. Recently, one sold for almost $200.00 on Ebay (see link below). Even in a bad economy, some 240Z parts still seem to rise in value. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110588401592&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

For only $300.00, if one of our members in the NE has some space to store the car, they should seriously consider buying it and get it out of the elements. Even in its poor condition, this car could still be restored. As Zed Head mentioned, most of the car still looks to be intact.

Here's the listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-1970-and-1-1973-Datsun-240Z-/260660212425?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3cb08f32c9#v4-33

Looking at the pics, the car looks very clean and original; however the engine bay could use a little cleaning.

Hi Mike, My body & paint guy, Karl Witchie used a single-stage process using DuPont urethane paint that closely matched the original 904 White on the '72 (below). On my '71 from Arizona, he used the same process. (I plan to have him deliver the '71 very soon so I can get started on the interior and everything else).

Mark, I bought some nice lug nuts at Pep Boys for 2 of my 240Zs with the slotted mags. They are made by Rally -model #90145 and are 12 mm x 1.25 and come in sets of four. The center caps and the 'Z' stickers that go on them can be purchased from MSA. -
Just curious, how much was the chrome strip kit at Pep Boys?
