    JSM, For the amount of metal that you cut out, you may not need to modify your shifter. As Psdenno mentioned, you may want to try shifting with your console in place. As you can see in the picture below, I didn't cut out much of the metal and before my shifter was modified, it would pop out of both 2nd and 4th gears when the console was in place. After the shifter was modified, it shifted great with absolutely no issues.

    JSM, You may also need to have your 5-speed shifter modified as well. That's what I had to do with my former 8/71 a few years ago when the original 'Type A' transmission went bad and I replaced it with a low mileage 'Type B' 4-speed out of a '72 that I had in the garage. My body & paint guy modified the type B shifter so that it would work better in the '71. I have attached the pictures.

    $70K? Wow! I remember seeing one in 2004 when my son and I visited Peak Nissan in nearby Littleton, CO. It was originally purchased in 1996 or 1997 by a gentleman in Florida and Peak Nissan had it on their showroom floor. Asking price back then was $30K. Here are a few pictures that my son took of the car. By the way, Chris, I would love to buy a copy as well.

    Thanks for clarifying things, Carl. I should have said that my Series III console and not Series II console on my 12/71 240Z had the blank plug where the coming seat belt warning light was planned to go. You also mentioned that Nissan's records indicate that HLS30-62001 as the beginning of the horizontal defroster lines. So my thinking is that perhaps my former 240Z's (HLS30-59523) rear hatch glass with vertical defroster lines was broken at some point before I bought the car in September 1978 and was replaced with a new a piece of hatch glass with horizontal defroster lines.

    Motorman7, Your friends' car is an early '72 model Series III car built with in late 1971. I find the early Series III cars to be interesting. I like the vertical defroster lines on the early Series III cars: Sept thru Nov of '71? My very first Z that I bought when I was in college was an early '72 (HLS30-59523), but it had the horizontal defroster lines since it was built in 12/71. However, it still had the older, non-retractable seat belts, as well as a blank plastic plug in its Series II console fuse box cover where the seat belt light was later installed in the '72 models starting in 1/72. My son and I used to have HLS30-64733, built in 1/71 and it had the retractable seat belts with the seat belt light and the annoying buzzer that was still operational when we bought the car in 2004.     Great story, Madkaw! The uni-body looks pretty solid on the '71. I hope you restore the car and don't cut it up for body parts. Worst case sell it to someone who will restore it.

    Being a 240Z guy, I don't pay enough attention to the later Zs, so this is the first time that I have ever heard of the Shiro Special Edition, very cool, Mike! The only thing that I'm not so crazy about are the white wheels, but overall a very nice car.

    So you are the one who beat me to the punch on this car! I texted Shawn the seller on Saturday, asking if the car was still available and he texted me back a little later and said: "Hey Steve, sorry but I just sold the Datsun". Looks to be a great find, Oemz. Congrats! I've owned two 904 White 240Zs, a '72 and a '71. The '71 had the blue interior that I bought out of Phoenix back in 2007 and then refreshed. I love both the white/blue combo and the blue/blue combo on the '70 and '71 240Zs! On the '70 and '71 white and blue 240Zs, the blue interiors were far less common than the black interiors.
