Well, I went and looked at the car and the best thing about it is the very low VIN (#1032) and matching engine (#4056) from 1/70 !!! The car was repainted at some point in time, perhaps about 10 years ago or so (poor job with overspray in many areas). The bumpers are in pretty good shape, the front one being almost flawless. Rear tail lights are in good shape, with just a little discoloration on the chrome pieces. The original black interior isn't too bad, with the exception of the cracked dash (no surprise there) both seats are original and have small tears. The headliner is pristine as well as the rear plastic interior panels, the console and the ash tray/lighter piece. Although, the rear defogger switch was gone. It has Keystone slotted dealer-optioned wheels that are in decent shape. The car shows no signs of ever being in an accident, except for a very small dent in the rear. Now for the rust: I checked under the battery and the metal is a little thin, but no holes. There is some rust in the engine compartment located at the base of each strut tower. The right front fender is rusted out at the bottom as well as the right rocker panel. The bottom of the left front fender is bubbled as well as the tops of both rear fenders. The floor pans are rusted through under both seats, but not in the floor areas. The driver's side being worse than the passenger's side (about the size of a baseball on the passenger's side and about the size of a cantelope on the driver's side). As I mentioned before the floors in front of the seats are solid. The spare tire area is solid, with no rust. This car has average rust of an early Z, not as solid as some, but not too bad. As mentioned on Craig's List, the car hasn't been started in 2 years. I understand that the fuel pump was clogged and the gas tank needs to be boiled. Has the "2400" valve cover and seems to be almost all original except for an older after-market AM/FM cassette player and a 5 speed tranny. It is not an A/C car. Overall, I would say that this car is a good candidate for a restoration, primarily since it is such a low VIN with its original engine and all the ID tags are there and clean. Let me know if you have any questions.

Since it's only about 20 minutes away from my house, I will call and set up a time to take a look at the car tomorrow and let you guys know what I find.

Yeah, it was a great day, thanks for inviting me, Darrel. Bill, I'm sorry that you couldn't make it, perhaps another time. Darrel, actually, Dan had a camera, but I didn't bring one...... Oh, by the way, I think the low-profile tires look pretty good on my '71, expecially since the car is lowered 1 inch.
-
My '71 came with a key lock for the gas door. I have heard that this was a dealer option on the 70 & 71 models and not stock (and that the non-locking chrome knob that 26th Z talked about & showed pics was stock), is this true?

lonetreesteve replied to 7T1240's topic in Open Discussions
Gary, I know an excellent Nissan/Datsun mechanic who specializes in Zcars. His name is Bob Bush and his shop is called Fortunate WheelZ. He is located at 11190 West Alameda Parkway, Lakewood, CO 80226 (very close to Golden). He can be reached at 303-798-9822. Bob prefers if you bring the car by his shop for inspection, just call him to set up an appt. He is closed on weekends. -

Carl, Thanks for the information and help. Like you suggested, I used the barrell clips instead of the nuts (I had some clips left over after installing the other emblems). Also as you and Will suggested, I used a strong silicone adhesive on the metal emblem and pegs. The emblem looks great, thanks again! Darrel, The '71 should be ready; the '72 probably won't be fininshed until March. Do you have more info on the show at Tynan's?
-
Thanks for all the great information guys, I really appreciate it. Carl, Assuming that if we install without the nuts and considereing that our '71 has the much heavier metal hood emblem versus the plastic one on our '72, is the 3M emblem adhesive strong enough to hold down the metal emblem? I would think that the silicon adhesive that Will suggested would only be strong enough for the plastic emblem. However, if I find another nut, I think it would be a good idea to add the silicon to hold everything together so the nuts don't rattle loose and I would also be able to remove the emblem down the road without damaging the paint.
-
My son and I almost have our '71 complete, but we are missing one of the very small, flat nuts that holds the metal hood emblem down. We have looked everywhere for a replacement and have come up empty! Does anyone know where I we can find one or does anyone have a spare by any chance?

Red Dog, I guess you didn't read through the entire thread -he wants to buy one ready to go and doesn't want to deal with restoring a car.

Living in Arizona, you should be able to find a nice rust-free 240Z. By contacting the local Z-Car Clubs in Arizona that Victor provided, that should be a big help. Here are some examples of some nicely restored 240Zs, like some of the other members have stated in this thread, be prepared to spend a good amount of $$$ for a solid 240. Good luck and let us know when you find one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-Datsun-240Z-1971-Fully-Restored-240-Z_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ020QQitemZ300017696133QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-Datsun-240z-ground-up-restored_W0QQitemZ220015587218QQihZ012QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240z-fairlady-z-look_W0QQitemZ230016349990QQihZ013QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/73-Datsun-240Z-FULLY-RESTORED-SHOW-CAR-LOADED-MUST-SELL_W0QQitemZ280018396611QQihZ018QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The first one would make a great project for an SCCA race car. Last one is a right-hand drive car in the UK with no reserve. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-240-Z-Rare-240-Z-full-SCCA-legal-GT2-cage-280Z-Motor-more_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ007QQitemZ170009528942QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-1972-Datsun-240-Z-to-restore-1974-260-Datsun-for-parts_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ018QQitemZ280008511360QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-Datsun-240-Z-race-drag-parts-collector-No-Reserve_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6783QQihZ007QQitemZ170007674389QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1973-Datsun-240Z-turbocharged_W0QQitemZ220008364523QQihZ012QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-280Z-Parts-Car_W0QQitemZ140009992817QQihZ004QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/979-Datsun-280Z-PROJECT_W0QQitemZ120009442583QQihZ002QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1976-Datsun-280Z-2-2-Runs-Drives-Excellent-Classic_W0QQitemZ250009009125QQihZ015QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/1973-DATSUN-240Z-99p-START-PRICE-NO-RESERVE_W0QQitemZ190010245611QQihZ009QQcategoryZ122147QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem -
Why So Many Project/Parts Zcars For Sale?

Zbane, I realize that you live in North Carolina, but it's only at $66.79 (at the time of this post with only a little over 2 days left). You could probably buy this car for under $400.00....wouldn't that be worth a trip to Utah? -

The first one, located in Arizona, looks to be pretty solid (floor pans look good, etc) and a good candidate for restoration: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-Datsun-240z-parts-car-Arizona-Shell-240-z-auto_W0QQitemZ280006492006QQihZ018QQcategoryZ6783QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1973-datsun-240z-car_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6755QQihZ009QQitemZ190006516658QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-240Z-Datsun-Nissan-240z-Dont-pass-over-this-auction_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ015QQitemZ250005339185QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-240Z-1971-Datsun-240Z-6-cyl-manual-RUNS-NV-NO-RESERVE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ006QQitemZ160006214710QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-240z-sand-blasted-72-240z-with-extras-great-project-car_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ018QQitemZ280006203456QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-DATSUN-240Z-1972-CLASSIC-RUNS-RESTORE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ015QQitemZ250006729988QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1976-Datsun-Nissan-280Z-car-parts-Z-series-runs_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6763QQihZ013QQitemZ230005304115QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z280-2Door_W0QQitemZ320004420133QQihZ011QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-280Z-Chevy-v8-convertion-JTR_W0QQitemZ120007128424QQihZ002QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem -

Fairlady Z Up For Auction on Ebay!
lonetreesteve replied to lonetreesteve's topic in Open Discussions
It's still at the $9,600.00 figure with 29 bids and over 4 days left at the time of this post. I didn't realize the demand (and value) was so high for these! Early "D" Hub Caps Going For Record Price!
lonetreesteve replied to lonetreesteve's topic in Wheels & Brakes
The set of D's my son and I sold back in January (see earlier post in this thread) were an extra set. We put another set of D's on our '71 that are in about the same condition as the one's we sold on Ebay and they look great on the Orange 918 car! Of course, we are trying to restore our two 240s as close to original as possible. -
Seems like a great deal for someone in NoCal. Heck, that works out to be only $600.00 apiece. I'll bet you could get them both for an even thousand!

Early "D" Hub Caps Going For Record Price!
lonetreesteve replied to lonetreesteve's topic in Wheels & Brakes
Last January my son and I sold a nice set on Ebay, not as nice as the subject, but still in great shape and we got $620.00 for them (see pics). Arne, I still think it would be a good idea to try to ride some of the frenzy that's going on right now. Just set a reserve that you can live with and go for it. Might as well, while things are hot right now! -
Early "D" Hub Caps Going For Record Price!
lonetreesteve replied to lonetreesteve's topic in Wheels & Brakes
Arne, Be careful.....Ebay has some very strict rules about soliciting to other Ebay members. If I were you I would list them as soon as possible and there is enough time left (about 2 days at the time of this posting) on the other set for the people who have been out bid to bid on yours. Good luck! -
Early "D" Hub Caps Going For Record Price!
lonetreesteve replied to lonetreesteve's topic in Wheels & Brakes
Arne, If you cleaned your hub caps up a bit they could probably fetch a good amount of $ on Ebay! -
I keep a pretty close eye on these when go up for auction on Ebay and if I remember correctly, about a year ago or so a set went for a little over $1,200.00. The general member consensus was that they sold for a record price. Well, here's a set that has already surpased that $1,200.00 milestone: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=270003260875&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT
