The threads are different on each side. Right hand threads and left hand threads. Make sure you are applying pressure in the right direction. I've had them stuck tight before, but I've never had to use a torch to loosen them up. I only use heat as absolute last resort.

And a bow and arrow wil do basically the same thing as an AK47. WD40 is far less effective than PB Blaster or Kroil (or some other products). It is not even in the same league as these products. Try one of these newer products and I doubt you'll ever go back to WD40. $.0250

Alternator noises
I hear what your saying, but if the rotation is being slowed down, your gonna smell burning bearings, and fan belt, and likely here a screech from the belt slipping as well. Complete failure will follow shortly. I wouldn't expect bearing noise to be intermittant either. Either way, once I confirmed one problem or the other in the alt, I wouldn't be mucking about trying to "fix" either. I'd get a new/rebuilt alt, install it and take the car for a nice drive, then have a beer when I get back.

Since power output is fluctuating, I agree with Stephen, I'd suspect the diodes first. Bad bearings shouldn't affect power output until they are almost frozen solid.

....unless your car is being judged under ZCCA rules in the stock class. Dealer installed "options" (except A/C, I believe) will cause a loss in points.

If you want to talk parts cars, I believe what you say, but I look at more cars being driven, and/or shown at shows than I do junkers. (too depressing to look at junkers all day) Here in the Bay Area, CA a single helicoil kit with appropriate tap and drill bit and helicoil insert is over $30 at the Parts store. Off to Blackhawk All Datsun/Nissan Show! TTFN

Wow, you need to look at better cared for examples of Z cars. Sure it's colmmon to have this happen, but to see "most" Z and ZX's with this issue.... Around here you'll spend at very least $30 for the helicoil kit, and the mechanic will almost always keep the bit, he won't even mention it. Agreed.

$1000 to determine what to do is "bullshit". Since it appears that you cannot repair this with your own skills and tools, Step one is to find another shop that won't B.S. you. In some cases a competant shop will need to remove both manifolds, then remove the broken stud, and simply replace the stud, or more probably they will drill out the old stud and install a "heli-coil" (it repairs the threads in the cylinder head) and then install a new stud. Cost will depend on labor rates in your area (which we have no clue of, since you didn't fill out your profile completely), but there shouldn't be anyway it would approach $1000. Step One = Find another shop. (it's worth repeating)

Inspection lid rubber cushion
There are bumpers and cushions. The cushionss go on the lid, the bumpers go in the channel of the opening that the lids fill when closed. Both appear on eBay fairly frequently.

Not all ball joints are the same...
I've never heard of either brand, but I am aware that not all ball joints (and tie-rod ends) are equal. Learned that the hard way too.

Who makes this mirror?
IMO they look cool painted body color, but I'm keeping mine black until I have the whole chassis painted (in about a million years). I stopped at a garage sale 3 weeks ago (first time in about 25 years) and found a brand new "old school" Kraco AM/FM Cassette Stereo kit with Speakers (the box claims it will fit 240-280Z). I asked how much they wanted for it (my parents neighbor), and she gave it to me for nothing. Cool! I know it's not a real high quality unit, but it's new, free, and it should fit my car. 3 out of 4 ain't bad!
