What is this?
Yes, as victor stated, the apparatus looks much like what one can find in an adult "book" store, kinda like a garter, of sorts.

What is this?
That's what I suspected, but I wasn't sure where it attached. Thanks, Moonpup!

In need of Z
Welcome! If you update your profille, so other members know in what area you are living, it would be easier to give you pointers. Also, the members for the most part are an awesome group of individuals who may just accompany you to your next Z viewing. That said, I have found Craigslist to be a good resource for parts and even whole cars, look at these: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/163465878.html http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/163213437.html http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/162168628.html Actually, don't look at the last one, I might be interested in that one!!

Throttle Linkage
Thanks, BeanDip, I have adjusted the slop out of the linkage, which helped a LOT, but there is a small bind as I have described. I believe it's in the firewall spindle mount, since the rod has about 1/8 inch of play (the "bearing" hole is larger than the rod end). I need to find a new seat or bearing to keep it tight.
-
Throttle Linkage
Sweet, thanks! I almost forgot about that box of throttle stuff I had....
-
Throttle Linkage
I tried silicon lube, everywhere, but the bind is still there. The rod that that sits in the "grommet" (for lack of a better word) at the firewall is about 1/8 inch loose. I am brainstorming a way to force a skate wheel bearing, or something to decrease the play/friction.

Throttle Linkage
ROFL You guys are too much! Mountain Gote, is your linkage like mine, where you can push on the accelerator pedal about 25% down, then feel a bind, and if you push harder, all the sudden it frees up and you get an explosive acceleration? (scares the wizz out of my wife every time!!) I still haven't found a way to smooth that out without changing parts that connects to the firewall.

Gasoline Prices, and your Z
Yes, thank you for that, Mike. That's the kind of behavior I have witnessed on the mountain roads where I live. Somebody (there's always the idiot in front of me) equates slow driving to safe driving, frustrating everyone involved. People pass wherever they can, safe or not, endangering everybody. Why can't people understand that when there is at least 5 vehicles behind them, in CA, they are officially hindering traffic, and pull the F*&%! over??? I am all for driving safe, but I am not going to drive 40-45 on a road (that is ACTUALLY POSTED as a 55 zone) just because it is curvy. And, if there are people that want to go faster than I do at that particular time, who am I to deny them that pleasure? If they happen to run off the road after they pass me, I might wave to them as I go by...(hasn't happened yet, though).:cheeky:

Gasoline Prices, and your Z
I would also like to know where you get that number. The numbers haven't changed in CA since 2002, but I don't know if they have for other states: http://www.gaspricewatch.com/usgastaxes.asp In CA, Fed taxes are only $0.18 per gallon. The state tacks on almost $0.51per gallon: http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/statistics/gas_taxes_by_state_2002.html So, from a $3.36 price, the government (state and fed) get $0.69, it costs $1.25 to refine it, so out of the $1.42 left, the company pays for distribution, salaries, health benefits, and retirement plans and don't forget about exploration for more oil. I guess the stock price helps out a LOT with the last one...

Gasoline Prices, and your Z
I disagree. This is a result of "peak demand" as percieved by the station dictating the price. It's common in CA for stations to stick it to consumers. May I ask where you learned that number? According to Popular Mechanics, I believe it was the February 2006 issue (I will research that one) the actual COST of refining a gallon of regular from crude is $1.25. That's a much bigger difference than 8%. It's not a question of $10-20 a week going to kill me, it's the reasoning that over my lifetime, using your numbers, I will be paying something like ($20X52weeksX50years) $52000 MORE than I have to, as well as my wife, as well as EVERY DRIVER in the nation. If that's not gouging, I guess I don't know what is. I, for one, have MANY other things I could do with that extra $52000!!

Need a "Crash Course"
With SUs you want to test the airflow while the car is warmed up. I am not sure if it's the same for Webbs.

choke cable, replace or repair???
All three of the choke cables wrapped around the pivot stud, for lack of a proper name. The other ends looked the same, with the boots, or just a nekkid cable.
-
choke cable, replace or repair???
I have several pairs of choke cables, with 3 different base plates (the part that attaches to the console). I am not sure which plate went with which year, maybe someone with that knowledge will step up. Here they are:

How long have you had your Z?
My wife found my car in the local paper in 2004. I got it from the 2nd owner after he had let it sit in his side yard for 12+ years. With the help of my bro-in-law (JMortensen), we got it started with less than 10 hours of work. Not bad for $500!! She's (the car) is looking and running better than I am for being 2 years older than me!

Fan shroud for a '77
WOW! Mine aren't that shiney, but I do have that style. How did you make that thing look so wet?
-
choke cable, replace or repair???
Hmm.. I have a couple of sets, I will try to see what the differences are between them.

Parts ordering
Yes, Eric is an upstanding guy!

choke cable, replace or repair???
Sounds like the cable snapped, since the lever still moves and the other cable still actuates the other choke. The cables are easy to find (at least around here).

Series I metal fan - how bad is it really?
I have a shroud that looks exactly like that!!! I am not sure if I have a bottom piece for that... I will rummage around and see what I can find.

Fan shroud for a '77
Hello, Bob, My car didn't have a shroud when I bought it, but I installed a radiator from an automatic ZX (I don't know which year) and used a plastic fan with it's own clutch (again, I don't know which year), and a fan shroud I happened to pick up in a bulk buy. I guess long answer short...as long as the shroud mounts line up with the radiator holes, you are good to go. [edit] is there something wrong with the timestamp? My watch reads 12:59PM...???

Series I metal fan - how bad is it really?
I have changed out the original metal fan with a newer (I am not sure what year, since it came with my 2 truckloads of parts) "high draw" (written on one of the blades) plastic fan with clutch. I also installed a ZX radiator and 2-piece shroud- they all fit together well. IIRC, there is about 1" between the rad. and the end of the fan. The temp guage hasn't read past mid-way since! Arne: Please PM me if you are still interested in a 2 piece shroud. ZSaint: Please PM me if you still need the bottom piece of the shroud.

Difference between Flat top pistons
From the link provided by Cozy Z Cole, I would have to assume that you would only have to swap out the head in order to have flat top pistons on a regular (non F4) block.

JC Whitney door seals
Thanks, Goose, that's really good to know, especially since I procured my 1 piece Precision set, but not had a chance to get it on the car with all the rains we are having in Northern Cali. Bummer it's supposed to rain for every day in the 10 day forcast!!!
