  1. Uh...the front page says "Pride, Performance, Preservation ... We are a club set out to support the original Classic Datsun Z" Preservation.Original.Classic Not exactly words you'll see at hybridz, is it? Then there's the attitude of some posters who bluntly state "The only Z has an inline 6, blahblahblah." I'm sure most recommendations to visit other sites are made with good intentions, as there's not a lot of helpful info here for ProStreet Zs. If you want to know how to restore your S30 this is where the most relevant accurate info and experience resides. If you want to mod it, go to HybridZ where there's some significantly impressive posting that goes on about myriad topics ranging from turbo, suspension, aero changes, ECU tuning etc that just doesn't happen here. There are some other sites, but they are also-rans when it comes to CZC and HZ.

I'm glad the OP made the introduction because I went to his website and checked out his work. Suhweet work, too in my own humble opinion. Still couldn't find pics of the Z, but that may be me. Like I said in my original post, having rodders interested in the Z is only good news for maintaining the S30 in the classic car community.

Did I read the BendPak site correctly? Says that ML-6 is NLA...bummer because that looked like just the ticket! A portable one for maintenace, and a 4-poster for storage! Edit: maybe not carried by asedeals.com as I found it also at http://www.pricenettools.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=166 after a quick Google search. Whew!
  4. Alan, Thanks for the clarification. BTW, it's my own suspicion that BaT is most likely one individual who uses plural pronouns to add emphasis to what is simply one person's opinion. Some of their other descriptions are similarly awkward or wrong, but at least they are putting it on the site which appears to get a lot of traffic. Any advertising/marketing is good for the Z community as a whole. If you want to educate the BaT moderator(s), they allow commentary on each of their profiled vehicles...I'm sure they'd appreciate what you have to say!
  5. IIRC, the 72-78 driveshaft are the same length, so the R200 should fit OK if you did the modifications relating to diff mount, mustache bar, rear control arm link etc. Do you have the correct halfshafts/flanges/stubs etc? http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=114798 www.modernmotorsports.com www.zbarn.com Should have the info you need (if you didn't already have it. Sorry if it's redundant!)

Looking forward to seeing the pics. Without offending, it's good to see guys with all the muscle car and hot rod experience use their skills with the Z. I had a very hard time finding anyone to do the paint and bodywork on my car, and had to settle on a guy who did an OK job, but not what I was hoping for. I took my car to several reputable local resto/classic shops, but they had a "domestics only" vibe that made me strike them off the list. I hope you enjoyed doing the work, and continue to help out with classic imports as well as domestic muscle and rods/customs.
  7. Can you elaborate a little more? What are the "bits" that make it expensive? What are the specs for British MSA HRC participation? What did BaT get wrong? No, they don't have encyclopedic knowledge (some of their US Z commentary has been off the mark as well), but could you share their errors so we're all smarter? Thanks

Umm..why do you want to replace it? What doesn't work? Is it just aesthetics, grimy tape etc? It took me a few days last winter to remove all the tape, clean adhesive from the wires, check wire continuity/resistance, de-corrode all connections (De-Oxit rocks), solder/heat shrink all splice points and rewrap (Eastwood sells great wire harness tape). I even made my own replica engine ID tag... Vendors sell the correct connectors/plugs for replacement, or you can buy some "junk harnesses" off EBay and scavenge parts from them (that's what I did) Why not put some elbow grease into restoring what you've got instead of throwing money at it?

Sorry...my memory of blue paint names isn't what it used to be...just checked the Honda website, and it's called "Fiji Blue Pearl." They also have a Royal Blue Pearl, but I think it has a little bit of purple or red in the clearcoat, if it's the color I think it is.... BTW, Bonzi Lon, that is quite the nice blue on your car...good choice!

Woo-hoo! I Like that green metallic (#113, AKA Avacado Green Poly)..Like #112 Lime it's a classic 70s color....going back that way, or have you decided? Looking forward to seeing it progress from barn to driveway!

Hard to tell from the pics, but definitely not an original S30 paint color. Maybe Subaru STi (WR Blue Mica), Viper (GTS Blue), Civic (Fiji Blue or Atomic Blue Metallic), 350Z (Daytona Blue Metallic) or even Lotus (Magnetic Blue)... Sounds like a trip to the paint store is what's needed!
  15. http://bringatrailer.com/2008/08/19/24-car-lot-dream-rally-car-collection/ Buy your own collection!

Glad yours ended up there. My final cost was almost double the estimate...I suspect he found out my profession and "took his time," but whatever. It's back and I enjoy it. Unfortunately it needs some touchups already, but I'm not inclined to take it back to the original painter. I'll just deal with it until I can't, then send it to a better paint shop.
  17. ask the guy at the paint counter to mix up a quart of paint according to PPG#....or am I missing something? The Datsun color code and PPG reference numbers are at zhome.com or here: http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/
  18. My painter got samples from two different suppliers who supposedly used the same paint recipe when mixing...two different suppliers, two different colors! Neither matched up with the tool lid underside (which looked pristine) but one was real close, so we went with that. During the course of painting some redos had to be done, and colormatching was chosen over the recipe...even the colormatch had to be redone 3 times before it was the right color. Bottom line (I think) is that both methods are flawed. Do your best due diligence and pick accordingly. If you're painting from scratch, I'd go with the PPG recipe over colormatching faded paint. You could try colormatching an unexposed area, but may not be happy.

One of the best collector classics I left off the list---the Saturn EV-1. Try to find one of those! Although, I bet most of the technology for that car can be found in the Chevy Volt....If you haven't seen "Who Killed the Electric Car?" you should---very intriguing look into the history of the EV-1. Will be interesting to see what happens to the Tesla. Wish there would be a dealer in the SE, but not sure if it'll happen. Love tohave one in the garage next to the Z and the M...

...I, for one, don't appreciate Alan's attitude in this thread. FTFY On topic, I had to review the threads and posts by the member in question. The gallery was only of Betty Page-esque pics, the sig was suggestive, the avatar was suggestive (not much competition for Sexiest Girl on the Site, at least by numbers alone....) and some of her comments appeared to intend to goad some members on (One was stating something to the effect of "I have to go get some clothes on now..." huhwha!? Was this MySpace or a car forum???? One shouldn't start down that road if one doesn't want to see where it goes.... I feel like every newb gets some respectful response to the vast majority of questions, even the ones where clearly "Use the Search Function" needed to be imposed...If no one responds, it seems like it's because the question was dumb/inane/answered elsewhere or spamming/phishing/trolling for some off topic merchandise. http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting comes to mind... We are very polite and respectful on this forum (unlike some other Z Car and automotive forums I visit.) I would encourage everyone to envision sitting across the table from the folks with whom we discuss topics, because I'd like to think that if I ever get a chance to go to a big ZCar event I'd be able to enjoy meeting forum members face to face. It's so easy just to be respectful.

I'll play...sounds like fun! To generate a list like this, one has to evaluate what people have deemed "collectible/desireable" previously. For most, future collectible cars are usually the ones that teenage boys dream of owning when they were in school. Mostly sportscars, muscle cars or luxury brands...not the typical sedan/minivan...Or, they are unique, one-of-a-kind technological marvels, uber-expensive supercars or something else that makes them unique or historical (prototypes, customs from Foosh or Coddington, etc). Some will be "attainable classics" like the GTi or Civic Si since they were cheap enough to own when in school, and evoke positive childhood memories. Others will be like the Hemi Cuda convertible that many dreamed of owning but had no chance....Regardless of whether these cars evoke an emotional response in one particular person, these cars appear to have a substantial following that could generate value/collectibility in the next 20-25 years. In no particular order: Plymouth Prowler Ford Lightning Viper (not sure which of the Limited editions, though--1st gen, Mamba, ACR etc) Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 convertible BMW E30 M3 BMW E28 M5 BMW E24 M6 BMW M Roadster 2004 Subie STi (maybe the 2002 WRX) Callaway, Z06, ZR-1 Corvette Porsche 964 Porsche 951 Limited ed Mustangs (Roush, Hertz etc) Mark IV Toyota Supra (OEM twin turbo 6spd) Ist Gen VW GTi 1st gen Honda Civic Si 1st Gen Honda CRX Si FD Mazda RX-7 Nissan 300ZX TT (or one of the last 100) Ferrari Testarossa Ferrari 308 Dodge SRT-4 Mazda Miata Audi Quattro VW New Beetle Mini CooperS Cadillac CTS-V Pontiac GTO Lotus Elise/Exige Nissan GTR Hummer H2 FJ Cruiser MB G500 Hard to tell which luxury cars will make it. Most of those have stunning loss of value since the cachet of having a luxo car is to have the "latest and greatest." BMW 850i? MB SL500? Supercars/exotics are sorta easy...Lambos, McLaren SLR...Ariel Atom...Koenigsegg (sp?)..Noble?... Not intended to be exhaustive of course, but just riffing off of what I'd expect to see at an antique car show in 2035....

Mark, nudge, nudge...maybe PM me when he'll let another go at MSRP? (fingers crossed)
  23. xray replied to westpak's post in a topic in United States
Is MSRP typical? here in RDU the local Nissan dealer was excited to offer their GTR at MSRP + $25,000. Nice car...not willing to suck up that kind of premium though

My chrome rings fit reasonably well (bought them back in 2005-6), but had to be flexed slightly to mount up properly. Small 1-2mm gap along the underside, but it allows moisture to evaporate without condensing on the inside of the lens. My seller was US-based, but had Japan contacts. They weren't OEM, but were JDM repros.
