Lachlan, re the F54 thing - there are two stories out there, some say the F54 is the best block to use as this is the later type etc, well I have both F54's and N42's and the research I have done does not show the F54 as a better block. Most of this F54 stuff comes from the US where they got the L28 before we (as in AUS/NZ and JDM) did. I believe there might be two types of N42 out there, the first one, ie the ones used in the 280z = US spec, and then the later units used in the 280zx before the F54. If you are planning to stick with a stock bore size then the F54 is a good choice. If however you want to build a big bore L28 use the later N42 block as these too are a siamesed cylindered block but the water galleries are not as large = bore bigger (I believe others have done sonic testing on both blocks and can confirm that the N42 have more meat for over boring). I believe the water galleries were changed for extra cooling in turbo applications (given the F54 was the turbo block also) I have also found that most of the Japanese build 3.0 and 3.1 use the N42 blocks so this might also suggest they are better suited to this application. I once found a Japanese site that would build a 3.0 on a F54 but stated that block filling was required (got lost in the translation but I think this was again talking about the water galleries and the lack of cylinder wall after a 3mm over bore) also escort (a piston make in Japan see http://www.escort-jp.com/) only shows a 88mm piston for the F54 block....hmm all this starts to tell me that the F54 is not a good as it is cracked up to be (well this is my research and opinion) So while other are hunting down F54's go an pick up a few N42 for cheap while you can if the L28 is the path you want to go. Just my 2c on the F54/N42 thing - again sorry for the slight hi-jack. Lachlan if money was not an issue I would track down a S20 and build the almost perfect GT-R replica however given the thread question we can assume that will not happen (S20 do come up on yahoo.co.jp from time to time but more $$ than you and I would want to spend unless we won lotto but then we would just purchase a real KPGC110 and be done with it ) and as you know there are a lot of JDM GT-X with the L28 treatment and a few with the RB20/25 and triple carbs. Re the RB2xDE (not the DET's) from what I have been told by an engine builder locally you can't get a lot more over the standard output without spending a truck load of $$ which does not justify the gains. This engine builder said if you want power from a RB it must be a DET not a DE. So it comes down to this - what do YOU want? Lots of power? a DOHC? Turbo or N/A. So if you want DOHC then you have just one (Nissan that is) in-line 6 and that is the RB series. If you want power then how much $$ have you got and what is the best bang for your buck (don't forget any engineering that might be required if repower is the choice). Then if talking N/A what type old school carbs or EFI. You have a lot of choices - I know I have been though them all myself. Whatever you do I am sure you will be happy and the quality will be great just like the work you have done on your car todate.

Re the NAPS intake thing - if I was going to keep this I was going to install a 65mm TB to replace the twin butterfly setup and remove/weld up the EGR. There are a few non EGR intakes here in NZ (NZ new cars only as the JDM have the EGR) as we did not have any polution control requirements until just recently (not sure if we have any standards at all just that all new cars now have it fitted standard not sure if this is a local legal requirement or just because that is the way they come - anyone else from NZ confirm?)
  3. NZeder posted a post in a topic in 240K Skyline
I no longer have my NAPS manifold - but as others have stated the plenium is larger and the twin butterfly thing. My NAPS manifold came from a L28 - I have not seen a NAPS on a L20aE yet (which means I have not looked hard enough). Re the quesiton about my ignition plans - I have 6 L20ET/L28E CAS dizzies (Yes the later L28E fitted to 280zx JDM have CAS systems - my NAPS engine has one but the dizzy is empty just a rotor as the CAS is a pick mounted to the block with a toothed wheel behind the front pully/balancer all Nissan kit) so I plan to use this setup to begin with. I am going with EFI Hardware Triple Throttle Bodies (from Speedtech in VIC I believe) for a bit of the old school look but with modern tech + I love the sounds triples make and I have not seen too many setup's like this here in NZ on a Zed (I know there are of 1 race car L6 engines getting built but this will have 50mm triple TB and be one hell of a 3.1 stroker going into a HS130/280zx 2 seater) I do like the idea of a RB with triple's be it carbs of TBs. Here in NZ like OZ there are lots of VL's RB30 around and they can be picked up from nil to a few hundred dollars. However I personally would not put this into a S30 - however we are not talking about a S30 now are we as Lachlan has a C110 which has a different body/weight layout so the extra weight in a RB might not be an issue. Whatever you decide Lachlan I would love to see it say a in-line 6. Given how your cars looks externally don't do a SR20 or V8 (again this is just my opinion) it will spoil all the good work in making a GTR rep on the outside. If you want a SR20 or V8 conversion get a 510 for SR20 conversion and a C330 for the V8 (I thing a Nissan V8 in a 260C would be very cool but to be the badest 260c with a V8 it would have to be the 2 door hardtop version ) Cheers Mike

Lachlan I like you thought long and hard about what I was going to do with my RS30 with regard to what would grace the engine bay. Idea's I researched (all including costing out the project) 1. Nissan V8 - both 4.1 and 4.5 (my understanding is that the 4.1 is slightly narrower and would fit better but if you want the 4.5 you can stroke the 4.1 to 4.5) 2. Next I had a good hard look (for 12months) at building a quad rotor or a 26B (2 x 13B on a custom shaft) for a 500+ HP NA engine. When I win the lotto I might do this but not in a Zed maybe something else 3. RB engine looked into - both DET and DE. Personally I like NA (well never owned a Turbo so can't really comment but they go like hell ) so this left just one other option 4. L6 3.1, 3.0, 2.9, or just a 2.8 (did not want a 4 cylinder as IMHO both the Zed and Skylines were first inline 6 and that is they way they should say - don't get me wrong I like the 300zx/350z and R35's but Nissan designed the original cars with inline 6 so it should have one it in) Anyway I have gone the L28 path as you know. My reasons - easy just drops in (worked or not easy install I can do that myself) - weight no weight change unlike a RB engine install = I am not automotive design engineer so I assume Nissan got it right 30+ years ago and I assume many of us agree otherwise we would not love the cars so much. - it has the old school feel + I love the sound of a L6 when rev'n - legally we can only drive at a maximum of 100km/h here in NZ (60mgh) so having a DET would = loss of license and maybe even the car. - my car will be a road car first and might just go around the track once and a while = 3.1 out (love the idea but gave my LD28 away so I would not be tempted to keep thinking this way). - I have triple TB for the engine so result = old school with a touch of the new (the IT guy in me wants to play with EFI and a mega-squirt) so that is were I got to in the end - I will be putting in a stock L28 that I have to begin with while I get used to the mega-squirt etc (plus to iron out any bugs etc after a complete rewire of the car) then I will use either the other F54 I have and put my worked E88 on with a set of L24 rods and custom forged flat-top at 87mm or build the N42 I have as a 3.0 with Kameari rods and pistons so my opinion if it counts go L6 Cheers Mike

Not a problem know the feeling also you don't need to stress about making a set - I have decided to sell the ones I have already (only just made the call in the last day or so after a chat to the bro) Sorry for the hi-jack....as you were
  6. Having purchased 2 sets of the Z31 Turbo half-shafts in NZ (again given NZ and OZ spec cars are most of the time the same) I can confirm they are 4 bolt with the non-turbo using the 6 bolt tri-pod half-shafts. I think what they are talking about is the fact that the turbo shafts use a 5 bearing CV joint (only 4 bolts hold it to the flange) the 6 bolt (2 x 3 sets) have a tri/three bearing CV setup. From the back ends I have looked at (including R30/R31, C31 = Laurel ie all early 80's) you can also find the 4 bolt/5 bearing CV shafts in the R30 turbos. Most of others have the tri-pod. So this matches the US info (in the Z31 space that is as they did not get the Skylines/Laurels/Lepards etc)

Alan, Thanks for info on the Mercedes-patented design/License. I thought it was interesting how the RB torque plate was the same - that info helps explain why. It was a shame Nissan dropped the IL6 (In-Line 6) as no doubt a lot of Skyline enthusiast will agree that the current Skyline R35, with the V6 is just not the same as the R34 and those before it. Just a personal thing I guess but I do love the sound of a IL6 on song. I guess this is why I like S30 family of cars, even Dad's L20aE powered Fairlady (now that it has my old headers and exhaust on) sound great. Shame Dr Shinichiro Sakurai and his team did not make it so we could put an RB head on the our L6 bottom ends water and oil paths the same also

I see someone mentioned the L4 rocker cover that had "Datsun OHC" on it - I have seen these here in NZ, I think I might have one. I know that I have one that has "Datsun 1600 OHC" next time I visit the garage were this is stored I will take a pic and post it here. Re the comment on the L20A with the small main bearing supports - I know that from 79 onwards the L20aE (ie EFI) used the smaller big end journals and rods much like the L24E you got in the USA for the Maxima - again Nissan using the same rods in the L20a and L24 like they did in the earlier engines, difference stroke and bore. These smaller journaled cranks/rods are common as mud here in NZ, these can be found in a number of JDM imports with the L20E and the L20ET (to be correct that should read L20aE and L20aET). Alan/Carl others can anyone shed some light on the Mercedes comment - I know it has been discussed before but I have been told that Nissan paid Mercedes a license fee much like Mikuni did when it licensed its carb technology from Solex (they then evolved the product to a number of different carbs designs - I guess much like Engine builders do aka the Nissan A Series engine was a licensed copy of the Austin OHV engine that was improved on by Nissan) Has anyone else heard that an RB torque plate can be bolted onto a L6 block? I have been told that if your engine builder does not have a torque plate for your L6 boring then ask them if they an RB unit as it will work also :surprised
  9. Well here in NZ we have 240z/260z that are Australia spec, some JDM spec and some imported from UK and other parts of Asia/Pacific. Most don't have the side indicators in the rear (and no holes for such), the lower indicators (below the headlight buckets) are mixed depends on the original market (some euro clear lenses other with the orange lenses), again depends on the market they were originally for but some don't have the side indicators or holes for them - much like what Mr Camouflage has already stated.

Hey link did not work for me If you are looking for the same units as me let me know what you findout. I am looking for the stock front turn/park lenses found on our (NZ/AU RHD 260z) these are a clear lense (like the ones too intence resto list but with an extra bit so a spliter can be installed to split the turn from park sections). These front turn/park lights have a orange lense cover on the turn half of the light. Here is pic of what I am talking about ( however these are sold out ) Nissan part numbers come back as NLA (both locally and in Japan) 1 = is complete light = sold out 2 = lense I am looking for - see the extra line compared to #3 3 = lense like these too intense resto are now reproducing (NLA)
  11. Not sure about the 240K stuff. As you know downunder we did not get the 280ZXT, however there are a few 280ZX (1982-1983) I have seen that were fitted with the tri-pod CV rear ends like the 280ZXT (these use the 6 bolts to hold the half-shaft to the comp flange). The 280z 27 spline stubs can be found on the later 260z (both 2 seater and 2+2). If you have a shop like Stuart Wilkins then I would talk to the guys there of the options. Other Nissans that I have seen that have the same rear end setup as the 280ZXT is the Nissan Laurel C31 (JDM import here in NZ) also have a look at the R30's with the IRS I believe some of these might have same setup as the Z31 Turbo (ie 4 bolt CV units = stronger I am lead to believe) Cheers Mike

I am with Alan on this one. Here in NZ we have a lot of JDM imports so we have S30,S31, skylines, etc plus we had a Prince assemble plant back in the day so we have some NZ new Prince Gloria's, then Skyline GTB both badged as Prince and later the new owner Nissan. There are few of the Super Six here also. And having seen under a few of the engine bays you can't ignore that these engines were the step stone to the L20a/L24/L16 = L series line of engines. I think you are kidding your self if you thing the L16 was a clean sheet of paper and the that 6 cylinder was not designed at the same time - remember that Nissan had the 2+2 shape almost sorted before the 2 seater that was released in the Export Markets as the 240z yet we did not see this for another 4 years. So I could be said that Nissan did the same with the L6 - designed and complete at the same time as the first L4 were released. Also if you think the L16 was a clean sheet then you must also have to think that the Z20/Z22/Z24 were a clean sheet (so therefore the L20B) as these differ from the original L4 in height and cross flow (except the L20B) but these engines were an evolution from the earlier L13/L14/L16/L18 designs. So with this in mind and looking at the picture Alan has provided you can clearly see the same principles in work when looking at this early L20 and comparing this to the L20a/L24/L26/L28's that were to follow. If you have seen any of these early engine in the flesh you know what I am talking about. We also have a number of different market cars that have been imported over the years (talking just the S30 series now but this does include other models/makes) we have Fairlady Z (S30 both L and S version), Fairlady Z (S31 both L and S version), Australian spec 240z/260z, JDM Fairlady 240z (aka the ZG), UK/Europe spec 240z/260z, US spec LHD 240z/260z and 280z. The list goes on. So here I think of the S30 as the family not just the 240z that was released to the US in 69. If you think like that then you fall under the "US we are the world mentality" which is just wrong.
  13. did you ask you local nissan parts dealer to check with Japan, just because they have no listing locally does not mean the parts are not available, I always get them to check with Japan sometimes they come back and say yes we can get it. Re the question about L24 rods. I believe the L20a rods are the same as the L24 rods the piston pin height is different to match the stroke. Yep I can confirm that I just looked up my S30 parts catalog (Japan Local Market catalog) both the L20a and L24 have the same part number for the rods.
  14. wow badged as a Skyline as well - is that stock badging or were they sold as 240k's
  15. The parts catalog I have is (all taken from the cover) Datsun Parts Catalog model S30 series r-drive dec. 1979 finial issue pub. No C-0010R export parts department Nissan Motor Co., ltd Tokyo, Japan Regards Mike
  16. Steve looking through my parts catalog (S30 R-Drive Export model's ie 240z/260z) I see the part number you have listed for op doors mirrors were for up to July 73. 96301-E4100 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE RH (EUROPE) 96302-E4100 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE LH (EUROPE) 96302-E8800 ASSY-BACK MIRROR DOOR OUTSIDE RH (FOR AUSTR) Then futher back in the book there are again for the up to July 73 (aka 240z) there are the following part number for fender mirrors. (under the front fender section) 96301-E4100 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE RH (BLACK) OP 96302-E4100 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE LH (BLACK) OP So I guess we can say that 96301-E4100 and 96302-E4100 are the black bullit fender mirrors (a bit confussing have the same part number listed in the fender mirror section and then in the door mirror section). Moving on to the 260z or from Aug 73 (again still 2 seater models - will get to the 2+2 next) The following part numbers are shown (all listed a options) 96301-E4100 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE RH (BLACK) up 07/76 96302-E4100 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE LH (BLACK) up 07/76 96301-E3400 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE RH up 07/76 96302-E3400 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE LH up 07/76 (I assume these are not the black but the chrome fendor mirrors - can anyone confirm) then from 08/76 96301-E4600 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE RH 96302-E4600 ASSY-BACK MIRROR OUTSIDE LH (assume these are like the ones fitted to my Zed original - see pic up in this thread) Then futher in again under door mirror 96302-E8800 ASSY-BACK MIRROR DOOR OUTSIDE (OP. AUSTRALIA) 96301-E8800 ASSY-BACK MIRROR DOOR OUTSIDE (OP. AUSTRALIA) replacing 96302-E8800 (can some confirm if these mirrors can be mounted on either side and just turn the mirror 180 degress to get it to work?

S31 = usually a EFI L20e power Fairlady Z. My Dad has one. S31 is the same body as the 260z RS30 the GS31 is the same body as the GRS30 260z 2+2. Alan will know the fully story but I believe there were a few 260z sold in Japan but Nissan quickly recalled those that had no sold and retro fitted the EFI L20e engine to over come changes in the polution laws of the day the chassis were restamped S31. At the same time all new production units were getting the L20e fitted and the S31 chassis numbering. I am sure other on here will also talk about the 240k (export name) C110 and the C111 I don't know a lot about these Skyline range but I would guess if Nissan was following a patten then the C111 skylines should have been fitted with EFI L20e engines were as the C110 were L20a (bare in mind this is home market not the export market) There are a few S31 and GS31 here in NZ most have been incorrectly registered as 260z (and people call them that) I guess this is attempt to reduce the confussion between the export model and the JDM (if you will) model. Hope some of this helps with the S31 question
  18. Bloody Nelson has all the toys you know that ZG he has - it used to be in Auckland and I believe he only paid around $15K (NZD) for it only if I was living in NZ at the time I would have picked it up (bloody work taking me to OZ for a few years)

Went to school with a Paul King not so bad (unless your sciense teacher is Malaysian - sounds like pork king) but his older brother was Wayne. My Dad works with a Wayne also last name Kerr. At a former job we had a Charles Parley (yep he even call himself Charlie). My current job we have Chris Shaw = C.Shaw. I wonder if his brother is Rocky or maybe his sister is Sandy

Being a Kiwi - and self-confessed bike nut I have seen it (some month's ago now, got released here a while back). Also we recently had a doc'o on the TV about the movie and the man himself. I hope this is going to part of the DVD edition went it is released as I would purchase the DVD just for the doc'o. The doc'o has some of the footage from one of the visit Burt made to the salt-flats. You can see a trailer on http://www.worldsfastestindian.com/ A good book on the man One Good Run: The Legend of Burt Munro And the cool thing about what Burt did = Burt Munro's 1967 world record remains unbroken. Records * In 1962 he set world record of 178.97 mph (288 km/h) with his engine bored out to 51 cu.in. (850cc). * In 1963 a connecting rod broke while he was traveling at an estimated 195 mph (313 km/h). * In 1966 his engine was displacing 56 cu.in. (920cc), but Burt was unhappy with some loss in top speed, and completely rebuilt it again. * In 1967 his engine was bored out to 58 cu.in. (950cc) and he set a class record of 183.58 mph (295.44 km/h). To qualify he made a one-way run of 190.07 mph (305.89 km/h), the fastest ever officially recorded speed on an Indian. From a popular New Zealand Motorcycle magazine Burt is quoted as saying:- "At the Salt in 1967 we were going like a bomb. Then she got the wobbles just over half way through the run. To slow her down I sat up. The wind tore my goggles off and the blast forced my eyeballs back into my head - couldn't see a thing. We were so far off the black line that we missed a steel marker stake by inches. I put her down - a few scratches all round but nothing much else". At the time Burt was traveling at close to 206 mph (331 km/h). The film about his accomplishments was made in 2005 called The World's Fastest Indian starring Anthony Hopkins and directed by Roger Donaldson.

I think this is from a L20a or L20e engine. I believe the blocks for the L6 version of the 2000cc are Y70 block casting. I know the head of the turbos are 05L - I will have a look at Dad's L20e power Fairlady next time I visit. So if it is from a L20a/e then I would assume small ports

Having a second look at the mirrors - they look very much like the factory ones Dad had on his 1974 Mit GTO-GSR that me purchased new in Singapore (long sold - shame the GSR models are very hard to find these days)

I guess they should not be walking on the road then - or is that driving on the footpath. The mirrors will look good, different with the holes in the legs but still will look the part.
  24. I have not seen a 240z/260z with under fender covers - is this a US market thing only? (note I did not state 280z as we never got those here) I have also seen a number of Fairlady Z (aka 200z or S30/S31) again no under fender covers.....hmm will check the part catalog I have RHD export models.....looking....no pic or partnumber for a under fender cover in the 240z 260z 2 seater or 260z 2+2 body sections.

Michael don't surpose the parts car has a good panel? If not get the insurance company to purchase you that 240K on Trademe another whole parts car 8) Have to tried Nissan to see if the panel is ex Japan? I thought I would not get a new (zed mind you) bonnet but I did it cost plenty but it is new Nissan
