lets dust off this post again (gas prices just went up, so its the flavor of the week). I am VERY curious about this... Gas is now 1.08/liter where I live (Canada) and I am very curious as to the merits of adding acetone to gasoline. My brother (a '57 chevy owner) and is a 47 year old senior chemical engineer with an oil company told me about this on the weekend. I never heard of it before. The argument is that the acetone lowers the flashpoint of gasoline and makes your engine waste less fuel. (burns more efficiently). people can call BS if they want to, but I am more curious to get responses from those who have ACTUALLY TRIED THIS. I have done some reading and what i have found: 1. if the wrong measurement is used, it might actually decrease your gas mileage. 2. you need to use the right brand of acetone - for purity reasons. It should be from a beauty shop supply shop. not the stuff you get from walmart. 3. it does eat paint, so don't pour it on the side of your car. 4. the acetone is diluted so much that it will not harm the plastic components of your fuel system. In my brothers opinion, anything that will increase gas mileage in your fuel would be frowned upon by the refineries because they would sell 25% less fuel. Whereas adding ethanol to fuel reduces gas mileage so its a boon to the oil industry. comments? I am also curious as to how you ensure your acetone is fully mixed with the fuel. (from those who have done it)
  2. got any fenders?

correction, its a '71 911 targa with a S engine put in it in 1986. Apparently the engine was built to put out over 200 HP. Im thinking Im going to need at least a 280zx turbo engine and 5 speed swap. plus handling upgrades...

OK My brother, a fairly well off close to retirement engineer, and 1957 chev owner, who talked me into buying and dragging home my 72z, just bought a 1972 Porche 911 (with a 5 speed) restoration project. My own restoration project hasn't even started yet even tho I have owned the car for about 3 years now (kids in elementary and highschool). so... what do I need to do to my z to keep pace? I don't want him to have a better car than me.

slot cars were a bit of a diversion for me after I sold my first Z car. Then my brother a 57 chev nut convinced me that instead of dumping my money into toy cars, I should get another z. So I did. now I am into slot cars (mostly SCX F-1) and have a z restoration project. :-)

that is too cool. I am also into slotcars and z's. what scale is that resin body? 1/24? there is a 1/32 slotcar available... SCX, I believe. It is based on a 260z but close enough for me.

You mention bad luck with Tabco, I have had very good service from a company called mill supply for steel body panels.

This too happened to me with my 1972 ford cortina back in highschool. The plastic break light swith was crushed and needed replacing. Once replaced it was fine. way to call it zipperman

I hate to drag this one up again but I will. Sorry y'all. I have jack stands for the rear and steel ramps (good new ones) for the front. I was just thinking yesterday that this probably isnt a very safe setup, as there is the potential for the car to roll back (because of the ramps) and knock the rear jack stands over . Is this possible?

Maybe I am biased but I always thought the Nissan crowd (us) was not a very good target audience for a "paper" magazine. I think we are better targetted to more leading edge media like cyberspace. We have excellent resources on the internet, and most of what a magazine rack could/would offer can be found elsewhere. I always considered early Datsun collectors to be years ahead of their time... whereas the chevy/ford group haven't or can't access the type page we are on right now.
  11. How hard is it to get title for an old car? my guess is not hard. I live in Canada, and have some rental properties. I have had cars abandoned on my properties and the rule here at least is that after a certain period that a car has been abandoned on your property, you can apply for title through the governement. once you have that title, its pretty hard to deny.

Thanks guys, my impression was that it doesnt seem like the actual clutch but the hydraulics. I will look at that first since it is an easier/cheaper fix.

...and on a related note, a guy at one of my rental properties left me title to his 1980zx 2+2 said it wouldnt work. I put a battery in it and started it up after a bit of fiddling with the ground wires. He said it needed a clutch, I pressed the clutch in and it just stayed there (at the floor after I attempted to let it out), I was able to engage it in reverse but after that no luck. I wonder if it is a worn out clutch, or something else clutch related. ...any clutch experts out there?
  14. 1972zed replied to SMUSICMANS's post in a topic in Help Me !!
I bought a 240z clutch kit off e-bay, and need to replace my 240z clutch. I know a kid, just got his journeymans and wants 150 to do it. I will probably let him. :-)

  16. sorry, is the 81 5 speed any better than the 1980?
  17. Is the 81 5 speed any better than the 81?
  18. I just "inherited" a 1980zx non turbo. Is there anything good about this car's drive train to update my 1972 240z? or should I just junk it.
  19. I had the same stalling problem with my 85 Nissan 720 truck. My vacuum hoses all had cracked/leaky ends. I actually put duct tap around them and stuck them back on with limited success. Then last summer I was out at a wrecking yard buying an alternator and strarter. I found a wrecked 720 with good hoses. I took every hose I could find. Replaced my old ones and now it runs like a top. This truck has not seen a Canadian December for 5 years but is now my daily commute. total cost? well you know when you go to a pick your part you always have to stuff a few xtras in your tool box.
  20. found a 1982 zx at a bone yard. I assume the starter and alternator would fit a 1980. Will the rear quarter windows fit? anyone?
  21. My nepehws buddy has a 1980zx. It needs a starter and an alternator (probably a battery too). He is pretty young so I volunteered to help him out on the cheap. I have replaced the starter and alternator several times on my 72 z and 1985 Nissan 720 pickup. The alternators and starters appear to be interchangalbe between the truck and 72 z. Although im not sure about the Alternator as there may be issues with output. BUt at least the holes line up. And I did take a starter off my z and put it on the truck at one point. I am heading to the boneyard this weekend to find him an alternator and starter. My question is, if I cannot find a 1980280zx what cars/trucks and years am I able to pull a starter and alternator out of for the 1980zx. I dont believe it is turbocharged and Id be surprised if it has air. Though I dont know but will check. AND is it as easy to change the alt and starter on a zx as it is in the 72z and '85 720 truck? which are both a snap.

Ok went out to look for jackstands. Found some 3 ton stands. Are they adequate? Place I went to sell 2 ton, 3 ton and 12 ton. The 12 ton ones seemed pretty overdone. the 3 ton ones give you 16.6" clearance. Is that enough room to do the clutch job?

Its sad how the media is now taking sides on this. I just watch a Fox newscaster interview Jesse Jackson, but then turn the tables and attack local Democrat governors and mayors and Jesse himself and defending the president. But on the other channels (CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS) they are blaming the federal government. On Fox they were actually saying this whole mess is a blessing in disguise and that the city will be renewed and rebuilt by entropreneurs and be a better city. They interviewed the owner of the basketball franchise who said it is a good opportunity to bring the casinos inland. While CNN et al. focus on the human tragedy. It really reinforces the left/right divide in America.
