Hybrid Turbo Upgrade on my ZX

Final Install
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
Again, this is recent so you can see how it looks after a couple of years. This has worked really well for me, with no issues so far. -
Downpipe
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
Another view of the downpipe to show a little more detail. This worked out really well - just be sure to check that your wastegate isn't going to hit the block. There isn't alot of room in there. And buy fittings from VW sites - not Japanese sites - you will pay 1/4 the price. -
Downpipe
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
This downpipe was made by Doug Smith of Fairlady Motors. This is a recent picture (about 2 years of use). The TiAl wastegate is not really visible there, but it is stuck underneath. I went for their "Hybrid" wastegate - smaller hole with bigger diaphram. Despite the common misconceptions - the higher the boost the smaller the bypass you want. -
Turbo Installed
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
Here is the Turbo mounted on the exhaust manifold. Note the limited space between the turbo and the heat sheild. However, nothing other than the spacer was required special (other than downpipe/wastegate). I have stubbed out the water for later. Water hookup is easy from the cold-start valve. -
T4 Spacer
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
I had this guy machined for me from mild steel. I gave the man the gasket, and said I want another one about 1/2 and inch thick, and $30 later, I had one. I don't recall the exact specs on it, but it is close to that size. -
The tools of the trade

To remove the old exhaust manifold studs, I suggest these guys -
New Studs
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
The new studs will accomodate the spacer. A spacer is required to mount the turbo - the T4 housing will come into contact with the manifold/head shield. -
Stock Exhaust-Turbo Studs
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
These guys were a pain to get off for me. It was accomplished with a pair of vice grips, a can of MAP gas, and some Liquid Wrench, and alot of cussing. -
Turbine Comp
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
Note that the "standard" T3 turbine housing does not match the stock T3 Nissan turbo. This means your stock wastegate won't work - not that you would want to try to use it. It won't be able to give you the boost you want due to the flapper style. -
Compressor Comp
From the album: Turbo Upgrade
Subtle but identifiable differences -
Exhaust and Stock Turbo Exposed

Notes: 12mm bolts on manifold. Use the head sheild to guide you. -

Driver's Side Engine view
A dual air temp sensor that I installed shows that the inlet air (out of turbo) at 16 psi is about 275 F, while the outlet is 140 F. I haven't seen it get over 140 F. Normal "down the highway" is 150 F out of the turbo, and 90 F out of the IC. I have no idea how that compares to an air/air, because no one seems to know what an air/air setup actually does. Everyone assumes they are the best and no one seems to have real numbers. If you have some, let me know! That is the smallest air/liquid that Spearco makes.

Z with Hummer
That is my buddy Matt's Hummer. It is a H1 wagon, but civilian. It looks like nothing you have ever seen because he actualy offroads with it! The day these photos were taken was the first day it had been washed in 4 years.
