  1. There's nothing bad of odd about a stock open diff. If you've never spun the rear tires on your Z in a corner, then you'll never know the benefits of a LSD. If you want the car to be more stable in a corner and allow earlier and more throttle exiting, then a LSD is of great benefit. Its the single best thing you can do for the handling of a S30. If you're not a cornering kind of guy, no need to spend the money on the diff.
  2. Yes. You'll also need to ground the starter to the engine and have a small wire to send 12v to the starter solenoid to trigger the starter. And make sure the engine is on a stand or securely mounted to something.
  3. As Zed said, you need to spin the engine with the starter.
  4. I've seen auctions where the reserve is set high and the seller colludes with a buyer to drive up the bids. If their fish take the bait the reserve is dropped at the last minute and the colluding buyer stops bidding, leaving the fish with the highest bid. I'm not saying that's what happened here. The same little game happens at the big muscle car auctions.
  5. You are seeing 90 to 110 psi on a compression test? You should be in the 150 to 175 psi range.
  6. Anywhere from 10 to 30%. The numbers are not directly comparable. Some of the better chassis dynos are very repeatable but none approach the accuracy of an engine dyno that is certified to either the SAE, JIN, or DIN specs.
  7. 208 hp at the crank is attainable with a stock internals L24, 9.5 to 1 CR, running SU carbs. 200hp with Weber 45s and a good cam on a N42/N42 combo is easy. My BSP N42/N42 L28 build made 181 hp at the wheels with SUs and a stock cam. You can even keep the dished pistons. This formula has been discussed for 15 years over on Hybridz. Its nothing new or nothing special.
  8. Although aluminum has better thermal conductivity then brass or steel, what makes one radiator more efficient than another, regardless of material used, is surface area exposed to air. More tubes, more fins means better heat transfer. Material choice is a lesser consideration unless weight is a concern.
  9. Maybe Nissan thought getting some air flow around the muffler was good idea?
  10. And if you did that in back you would completely screw yourself. Read the entire strut thread in the faq on hybridz.
  11. The mag wheels are not rare. The center cap itself is not rare but the "D" decal is something I haven't seen before. So you might have a rare decal.
  12. Oil is not needed. Modern shock oils can handle much higher working temps then what was used 20 years ago. I just put grease on the shock body so it will come out easier 10 years from now.
  13. Do not add marvel mystery oil, or any oil to your fuel. You're actually reducing the octane of the fuel and adding combustion by products that increase carbon build up.
  14. About 6 years ago I offered a complete undercar fastener kit (yellow zinc-chromate, all new parts) sourced from Wurth. Class 8.8 and 10.9 fasteners as appropriate for the application. No takers. I was told it was too expensive by everyone interested who felt $250 was the most anyone should charge for nuts and bolts.
  15. In most cases you don't need to replace the bearings in an R180 or R200. They are pretty sturdy and if the diff has had the fluid changed a couple times in its lifetime the bearings are probably still good.
  16. It could be something that exists on all S30s. I just don't remember.
  17. Side window glass is specific to each side of the car. The passenger (right) side glass is etched on the inside. The driver's (left) side is etched on the outside.
  18. Noticed something on 502. The lettering on the glass on the passenger 1/4 window and the door glass is backwards. Is this unique to this car or something that happened on some of the other 1969 cars?
  19. I never had the car in my shop, it was about 8,000 miles away. I do have a pic of the diff I built: https://www.facebook.com/143989191670/photos/pb.143989191670.-2207520000.1407770794./10151061129031671/?type=3&theater Alan would know better then me but a US example is the Frissell IMSA 260Z.
  20. You will not notice a difference through the seat of your pants. If you want to do it face the open part of the gap towards the intake valve.
  21. FYI... the yellow SR20DET 240Z sold for about $50K to a buyer in the UAE. I built him a new differential, a new suspension, and sold him a OSG clutch system because what was on the car was improperly installed/setup. It looked good but drove like crap. The most expensive S30 has sold north of $250K. None of the cars listed here will break the $100K mark.
