EFI Performance without running seperate system....
I agree that it is not luxury, I would say that the only thing luxury about it at the time would have been the E.F.I., other than that?? like Zrush said, "bare bones sports car"

Check out this little piece of art...
I sketched this from looking at my 77 280Z through the window yesterday while not having much to do, however, I made it look more like what I would want it to look like when I finish the body work... ENJOY

What sort of music do YOU have on while out Z'ing?
I am just curious as to what everyones' musical taste comes to while they are out enjoying that which is known as the Z. Myself, I listen to a little bit of everything, but I like the seventies feel of the car, therefore I find myself listening to alot of classic rock... for example: Three Dog Night, BTO, AC/DC and a little OZZY with BS.... the list goes on! -ZzZap

FS : 1 Sparco Milano Suede Seat - Black (lost my job)
I'm glad to have my job at the Country Club in the golf division, lots of great discounts on all the merchandise in the shop and free lessons and help, plus 50% off Oakley sunglasses, can't beat it! the only downside is that it only pays 5.50 + tips... and considering its off season... I'm hurtin right now myself, and my parts car just took the rest of my cash... there goes my ZX dizzy swap!

EFI Performance without running seperate system....
Is there any way I could get more performance out of my EFI without running something like Megasquirt??? In order to get the kind of power Im wanting (170-180 rwhp), I have been told I can't without dumping loads of money into a new injection system... and replacing the restrictive stock intake manifold... Any ideas? thanks. SU Carbs are still lingering in my mind....

Fuel Injection cleaner + my car = running great!
After I went through most of the EFI (checking areas that could have produced the symptoms of surgeing)... I cleaned connections (TPS AFM thermotime and CSV and water temp) Checked out the AFM and cleaned it up, purchased a new cap and rotor, new plugs and wires and ignition coil. And also adjust the TPS. And to no avail.... One of the things I did not think about and regretfully overlooked was the injectors... what if there were particles perhaps blocking injectors, causing fuel blockage which could cause surges... I went to the store and bought 2 bottles of prestone FI cleaner and put 1 in before getting some nice 93 octane... and WALA, drove the car for about 30 mins with no surgeing at all! Im very happy right now, I cannot begin to explain... Thanks for all of your help guys, and to all of the Z community!

I've decided to switch to SU carbs!
You guys are right... Considering that my car is EFI I should just deal with it and work out the kinks.... I still like the idea of SU's, but I believe that would be more of a side project perhaps something in the future?... I spoke with a mechanic friend of mine last night, he has worked on many Datsuns since 1980 and he reccommended that I go through the system, one section at a time, and re-work it, perhaps get a better fuel rail and replace several things... So I have accepted EFI as my option... I'm wondering... Are their any EFI performance references that I could take a look at? I have thought about buying the book "How to modify your Datsun OHC engine"... Ive heard it was a good reference, but it doesnt mention EFI.. Also, I have a 78 280Z 2+2 parts car, would it be safe to use EFI parts off of it? Just curious.. the only reason I got it to begin with was so I could steal the fenders and hood. thanks guys -Jared

I've decided to switch to SU carbs!
I'm gonna add another comment... I am a College Student, I work 2 jobs..(one at our Country Club in the golf division and I am a part-time substitute teacher)... I do not pull in money like those of you with FULL-TIME paying jobs.... My situation... the EFI in my 1977 280Z is very "out of whack". It has been tampered with and rigged without attention to perfection..... In order for myself to go through the ENTIRE system... I need one thing... $$$. EFI replacement parts are expensive.. (and in order to do a good job redoing the EFI, I would need to buy good new parts...). Lets face it, money is something I do not have. Why carb my 280Z?? its simple... well.. Yes it is simple! I would consider switching to carbs a "bang for your buck" method... why? because not only does this set me up for more less expensive performance but it is simpler to maintain IMO.. I have read the pros and cons for this switch, and I have recieved much NEG feedback... but the PROS I get from the few that actually supported my idea were great... I'm looking for budget performance... and I believe in SU carbs.... Therefore I want to undertake the project... I'm still getting NEG responses... and I really want to do this...

Having EFI problems...(Engine surges and missing at idle)
Well, I had taken switching to carbs a serious consideration, but I believe I'm going to try to cope with the EFI (considering I have a 78 parts car with many usable parts). Well, the whole reason around my frustration with EFI is how strange it has been acting.... Here's the story.... I have had the car for a month now. When I first got it back home, it ran fine... no surges, no cutting out, no missing... Only thing I really noticed is that it was set to idle higher and was running richer and I smelled fumes while decelling(only when the window was open). I idled it down to 1000RPM and it helped the gas consumption alot. About a week later, I had been making a run the Nissan dealership for some hoses I needed, and on my way home the damn thing just quit on me.... It cooled off and started back up and ran fine.... I was on my way home from work one night after that and it started surgeing and it quit on me.... The next day I test drove it again and it was still surgeing... I checked the wires (they were cheap and cracked), so given the situation, I took it upon myself to order NGK B6Es-11 plugs and NE61 wires. I replaced the AFM hoses and the car ran like a dream afterwards... the AFM hoses were rotted before and I thought that maybe that was the whole problem all along. I continued with the tune up... I got my plugs and wires and installed them to the appropriate gap.... I had the wrong firing order taken from a reference, it cranked and ran, but it sputterd and back fired.. .I thought the gap might be wrong so I gapped them to the max limit for my 280Z and they did the same thing... I found the right firing order and it fired up... I test drove it and it ran like hell at first, then it decided to surge just after 3000RPM.... I tracked it down to several things... incorrectly adjusted TPS... I tinkerd with it for several days and it still surged.... I bought a new ignition coil(the MSD blaster 2) and a new fuel filter... A buddy of mine was filldeing with the fuel filter and I told him not to take it off, we had to depressureize, he kept on and the thing just exploded gas in his face, it was actually pretty funny (comic relief )... well , since it was atuomatically depressurized for us, we installed the new filter.. its tight now with no leaks, a brown liquid poored out of it however (rusty tank?). The car still surges.... Another thought crossed my mind... Dizzy cap and rotor? perhaps when I had the firing order set wrong... the dizzy rotor (an old wore out one anys) could have pushed its limits and really decided not to function properly... This has been where my hunting has stoped, given the symptons and possible solutions, Ive come to these conclusions... 1. Particles from gas tank are the in the fuel pump and or injectors (requires some cleaning and fuel injection cleaner, and a cleaned and treated gas tank.) 2.Dizzy cap and rotor, old parts that are wore out...( I await them in the mail, both Bosch parts) If you guys have any input whatsoever, It would be much apprecitated... -ZZZap

I've decided to switch to SU carbs!
I've gotten mixed reviews from everyone, not only here but also on hybridZ... I'm confused as what to do.... I need guidence. I've had a few people tell me it was the greatest thing they could have ever done to their 280s... and others say don't do it... Oh and GA does an emissions team, but the focus of it is in and around Atlanta. I think California is the only state where it is strictly enforced.

I've decided to switch to SU carbs!
I've been gathering alot of info from various places on the net... and after many posts and collecting of feedback, I've decided on a carb swap for my 77 280Z... I feel that I will be much happier in the end. I'm going for an N42 Head.... L24 intake and linkage, and SU's... This is the setup I hope to accomplish. I know there will be a few things I'll have to rearrange and configure. I am seeking a completel list of what I will need, if anyone might know of where I can find a comprehensive one, please let me know

What all would I need to switch my 280Z to SU twin carbs?
Any setup suggestions or whatnot? I may consider switching in the future (my efi is very quirky). thanks

Makes sure to check and double check your firing order, it is 1-5-3-6-2-4 I had a bad problem with this earlier today.

Slight hesitation just after 3000 RPM...
After installling the new plugs and plug wires today and finally getting my 77 280Z running (running excellent I might add) My father and I noticed a hesitation(cut-out) just after the tach hits 3000 RPMs, does anyone know what might be causing this?? I though that maybe it is something within the distributor (I.E. the cap and rotor) or perhaps in the coil. Any opinions? *Note* this did not happen before today...

Installed new plugs and wires! car ideling LOW and not running right!
I finally got it! I got the firing order down, the ones I used as a reference were incorrect, I relocated two wires and now my engine fires and starts right up, idles and runs lbetter than ever! B6ES-11 traditional plugs, and NE61 Premium wires, all NGK, all works great and smooth, thanks for the help guys
