I knew you guys would know this!! Thanks again. Ended up just building a frame from 2 x 6's that I had and some casters I found at a friends shop. I think the wood will be fine, now I'm not sure about the casters. If it breaks I may have my friends hoist longer than I thought. I'm playing Mr Mom for three days while wife has fun in Charleston, can't get an entire hour of car time in, this sucks.

I love TN also, but you UT guys are fanatics!! I should say something like "wait until basketball season". Sounds like you've already begun the de-rusting. I'll be doing at least one floor pan soon. Hey theres one upside to the 5" holes, after you clean them up you it will be easy to shoot anti-rust into the frame rail.(Trying to make you feel good!!!). Keep us posted

Hey TN, looks like you have a good piece to start with. Most of the major "bits" are there. You know this site and man, these guys have shown me how to sniff out all the rust. Just have to know it will take longer than you think and cost more than you think, but it is a lot fun along the way. Let us know how the pans and other rust spots look. I get up that way on business, if I can will stop by and check her out

Thanks man, I'd go with the Eastwood model, but I am afraid it won't get here in time. I'll get the heavier dolly at Northern and maybe beef it with some 2 x 6's. Just need a way to move it after taking it out and get it out of the way. Thanks again

Hey guys, quick question. How much do y'all think the engine and tranny weigh? Pulling it tomorrow and want to put it on cheap furniture dolly from Northern Tool. Just want to make sure it will hold it, if not will have to spend time building something. Thanks
  6. Hey Plutovich had it right. Go ahead and take it to the boiler shop! You can jack around with the home remedy stuff and still won't be as good as the radiator shop. Here in NC, guy will do it for 120$ and will coat the inside also. There is also a balance tube in the top of the tank that you must make sure is clear. They can replace that also

What is ZONC. Sorry if it is a dumb question

My first was a 62 Willys CJ5. Still runs and is now in the space the Z was in the old barn. Dad was pretty smart, couldn't hurt that thing if I tried. If I can learn my wifes camera, I'm going to send some pictures. I hate that camera

44 and have had the Z since '78. Put in the barn in '90, man she deserves to be ripping it down the street again!

Looks great Ed, thanks for the pics and the advice. As said before that gives a lot of us the pump to go out and start cleaning!! Enjoy the show

Seerex is right, that stuff will fix almost anything. If you can get the rad out, a good shop can probably patch the hole more permenantly and fairly cheap

Andrea, welcome to the site. You will love all the info you find here. I have to agree on the 4 bbl. conversion. I have a old buddy who I have worked on Z's with for awhile. He went with the 4 bbl conversion and it has never been "right". It originally came with a 650 cfm carb and it dumped way too much fuel into the cylinders. And he runs a mild cam!! He has since found a 500 cfm Holley that could help but as mentioned above, I am worried about some cylinders running lean. Stay with the carbs you have, they are the best. If you have to change check out the Weber DGV's, they work great also

Hey guys, I'm going through the same thing also. I had (still have) the Craftsman 5 hp compressor, same story. I had some Holiday Inn points and converted them to Home Depot cards and bought the 2 stage from Husky there. It was 799.00, but they dropped it to about 740.00 on sale. The deal is Lowe's, they are dropping the 2 stage Campbell Hausfield compressors and they are selling them off for about 500.00. They had the same scfm setting as the Husky but higher psi. Wish I had seen it before I bought the Husky. These aren't "professional" grade, but they are two stage and give you all the air you need. And another thing, it is much, much quieter than the non-lube bath Sears stuff. That helps if you want to work while baby is sleeping. If you can swing it get the two stage, mperdue advised me on that one and he was right. PS, the Craftsman 175 psi single stage upright is pretty good but will still run on after it runs the tank. Good luck

Sean, what is that color? A buddy of mine has a brown (color 114) 72. It has the tan interior like yours. He is taking it to the paint shop this coming weekend and wants to paint it a BMW blue. Man, I like that green, I'm going to go get him and tell him to check out your color first!!! Thanks

Hey Zthing, if you are close to Charlotte, bring it over and we will cut yours first!! I've got the cut off wheel, the welder and fridge in the garage, bring the metal!

I've heard you guys talk about the floor pan repalcements from Zed Findings. Two questions, 1). Can you order 1 side instead of entire kit, 2) Do they come with seat mounts or do I cut my old ones out and use again. Thanks

Ed I appreciate you bringing this one back. I'm filling in time with bunch of cleaning and polishing and didn't want to buy new lenses!!! I thnk the new ones are made of gold. Your lights look great and thanks Enrique for the original info

Advice will taken, those areas will get a lot of wear underneath the mats, so that answers that!!! Looks like some sort of BC/CC it is!

Thanks BD, thats why I love reading this site instead of doing my paperwork!!! I like the idea of an activated base coat, that would be perfect. I wanted the interior "right" but didn't want to do a lot of paint prep in there(after priming). My mechanicals were done a while back so paint is now or never. Normal rust areas except rockers and driver floor pan(great shape, can't believe!) Nobody believes it will ever live again, except for my two year old who will be the only person allowed in it when done. I like to fire it up and drive it around the neighborhood with no fenders or hatch, well, until I took the gas tank and differential out this past weekend!! Just good to see others going through the same stuff and get great tips. I know I'll have some more questions as this gets closer to paint day

Way to go Ken, I'm not as far as you but right behind. Just got all stripped except for dash. I am going to pull engine this weekend. Couple of questions. Whats the trick to getting out the front and rear windows. I have a glass friend that says it will probably break!! Don't want to do that. Also are you painting the floor pans and rear deck with color or leaving it primer. I have thought about both, no reason for color but....... Also are you painting the engine compartment and under hood? How do feel about painting. I can spray primer but am a little worried. Of course if I F#$% it up then I just take it to the man anyway(after sanding the paint off!!)Great threads at good time to keep me psyched up!!! Wish I was driving instead of wrenching, buddy down the street with a 72 240 keeps driving by my house at full tilt when he knows I am under the car! Thanks again

Hey Yukon, thanks for the "real life advice". Its always a struggle between getting it back to the street or going too deep into resto. I want it to be right but I also want to get back in it before I pass into the great Z car boneyard!! One day I will get my pics posted!! Thanks again

Thanks for the tip. I wondered about how to get the POR into tight spots. The only thing that concerns me is that POR wants a surface that is "prepared". I have stripped the interior of the car and can look into the area above the liner and can see some surface rust that is starting, kind of runs with the seams. Believe it or not, my rocker panels are in good shape, but same deal, I can see surface rust on the interior of the rocker looking through the holes on the inside. Any ideas here? Will a media blasting guy have a flexible hose or something that will get down in those areas without cutting holes?
