New differential for the toy!
seerex, Actually I think I may have gained top end with the 4.10 gears because now I may be able to pull up to or close to redline in 5th gear. With the 3.90 gears I don't think I would have been able to even get near redline with the horse power I have....approximately 160 HP. I don't think I've ever had my Z much over 100 mph anyway. It's a street car and my interest lies in attacking twisty roads, not top end speeds. Anyway, I'm happy with the results!

New differential for the toy!
Santa brought me a new (well, mostly new) differential for my 240Z. I was running a 3.90 open diff and now have gone to a 4.10 with LSD. Basically took an R200 4.10 open unit (used of course, but in very good condition) and installed new bearing/seal and a limited slip unit. Spent new years day installing the beast! After the install was completed, I took the car for a drive. Oh yes! With the late model 280ZX tranny, 4.10 gearing, and 24" rear tire diameter....the car seems to be geared just right. So at 3000 rpm, I'm going approximately 75 mph (calculated). Anyway, I am pleased with the upgrade and will not miss having the inside rear tire cut loose, when coming out of twisty corners aggressively. Also, I now have an R200 3.90 (open) differential for sale. Its is excellent condition, nice gloss black paint with a polished out cover. I have been running SWEPCO 201 gear lube in the diff. So what do you guys and gals think of the upgrade?

R200 Lsd
Yah guys, its just a matter of changing out the carrier (the part the ring gear bolts to). Now of course you have to install new bearings and install the ring gear on the LSD carrier! And, recheck your tolerances. This goes for most differentials however, I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule. Regarding gear lube....it is highly recommended (by a lot of racers) to use SWEPCO 201. It even has a GL5 and MT1 rating....this means is compatible with clutch type LSD. You don't have to add limited slip additives to the lube, as you would with regular gear lube. Just some food for thought!

R200 Lsd
Ed, Are you surprised that a clutch type LSD carrier will bolt right in? Is there something that makes you think it won't? This LSD upgrade is a pretty common deal. If I had more $$$ to throw at it, I would have prefered a Quaife unit! A Quaife will bolt right in as well. I believe even the viscous LSD bolts right in.

R200 Lsd
Vicky, thanks for the congrats! Yah, I suppose I owe myself a Christmas present.....besides, who in the world would buy me a LSD as a present? As a bachelor I have to fend for myself you know! ZHeadV8, your absolutely correct!!! It will be interesting to see how much additional push I will get through the corners with the LSD!

R200 Lsd
FYI, I just ordered a new clutch type LSD for my R200. I ordered it from Precision Gear p/n (LOM59-12) (ph# 734 946 0524) at $602.95....I should have it 12/22/04. Since this LSD carrier is for a 12mm bolt set-up, I ask them about using spacers to fill the gap when installing it on an R200 with 10mm bolts. I was told they are not necessary! They have done a number of race cars without the spacers and have had no issues. They said that the clamping force of the bolts is what secures the ring gear to the carrier and that the 1mm radial gap is nothing to be concerned about....the ring gear will not move if the bolts are properly torqued. However, if you do decide to use spacers, be very sure they are not too long! If they are you will be torqueing the bolts against the spacer and not the carrier....this will be a problem. The guy at Precision Gear (Tim) seamed very informed, was pleasant and very helpful! Anyway, I will finally have a LSD for my 240Z....I was getting so tired of the inside tire cutting loose coming out of tight corners. I should have it in for the new year!!!

Shifter Thread Issue
It sounds like you have done some homework! I would say, unless you have the tools and skills to fabricate one yourself, go with the guy who will custom make one for you. While your at it, maybe ask people here if they are interested in one of these thread reducers for their shifter. I don't know of anyone who sales a unit like you describe, but maybe someone here can help out with a contact. Good luck.

What are my stats????
Chris, I'm guessing your relatively new to the site.....welcome! Regarding your question of performance....to make a SWAG on the performance of your Z, one would need to know number of details....engine mods/state of tune, transmission model, differential gearing, tire size, etc., etc. Also, you want to know how your Z will run! OK, run where...at a drag strip, auto-X, road course? Anyway, the more information you can provide, the better your chances are for a reply....and learn to use the search function on this site. Again welcome aboard Chris.

WTB: electric plug for key ignition
Chee, it will help if you can provide a little information on your Z....like; what year is the car!

can I turbo?
Vicky, If I'm not mistaken, Jim Cook Racing still sells a supercharger kit for the L6 engine. One of the Z car club presidents back east has a nicely installed unit on his 240Z. From what I can remember from my conversation with this gentelman, it works quit well. He did add that he had to run larger fuel lines from the tank to the engine bay. Other than that he said it is a good package and performs well.

Sputtering/won't rev past 3500rpm...
Sounds like you have some work cut out for yourself! I would check, clean, and or replace all the fuel system filters and screens, as required. It sounds like you just have some sort of restriction or blockage in the fuel delivery. Anything below 3500 rpm does not require much fuel.....however, when putting the throttle down for more power, the engine starves for fuel. Also check the fuel pump output after doing the filters and screens. When was the last time you did a tune-up? Hope this assists you in some way. P.S. Rust in old Z gas tanks is not uncommon. Sometimes when it is pretty bad, rush flakes can actually block off or plug up the tank outlet. Best to just clean out the tank at this point.

Saddest Day
Mark, for gawd's sake, put the 71 Z in storage or something. Get another car somehow to fulfill your mom's wishes, but don't part with the Z. Trust me, if you get rid of it now you will be kicking yourself in the :tapemouth later on!!! You may not be able to even find a 71 Z in the years ahead. Just some experience talking! Tom

L24 L26 L28 Dyno results
Interesting statement Justin!!?? What inspires you to suggest that American dynos are more or less than anyone elses dyno? Maybe we just have healthier engines.....most likely not. Besides, we're jacking up Mr. Camouflage's thread.

Voltage Regulator on the fritz?
Gav, Do yourself a favor and install your IR altrenator! As I remember, you will also need to install a diode in the circuit, do a search for details, otherwise when you go to turn the engine off it will continue to run! How do I know this......you guessed it, it happened to me when I install an IR alternator. The diode can be purchased at most electronics stores. And if you haven't already done so, convert to an electronic ignition as well. Just do it!

Wanted R200 Lsd Carrier
I have an R200 out of a 81 - 83 280ZX (open w/3.90). I'm looking to purchase a LSD carrier (Kaaz, Cuzco, Precision Gear...). Ideally, if someone has an R200 out of a 85 or 86 200SX Turbo (automatic-4.11) this would be perfect. Other alternatives will be considered. I live in SoCal. Please PM me. Tom (240ZX)

rb26 turnkey setup
How many miles are logged on the engine, what sort of service did it receive, and how hard was it used? Do you have a compression test readout? Very interested!

Yet another tire/wheel question

why dont z's get carbon fiber?
Greatwhite, Just to make a clearification........carbon fiber and kevlar are two different animals. Some manufactures use kevlar weave for the internal layers and then use carbon fiber weave for the external layer (for visual effect) to keep costs down. True CF race parts are usually all CF, are thinner by comparison, and lighter than the CF/kevlar mix street parts. Just some food for thought!

why dont z's get carbon fiber?
Come on Vicky, you know our toys (cars) are never really done, even if they appear to be! If you want CF parts, buy CF parts! I know with mine, which has been done and a driver for a little over two year now, I may just get the bug to turn it into the car I originally wanted at the start of the redo.....a 300+HP SBF w/5 spd, necessary chassis mods, fuel cell, Quaife diff, CV type drive axles, rollbar, and maybe paint job!!? I quess all it takes is time/money. Probably another $10K by the time its said and done. I do know one thing for sure....if I had that kind of HP I would certainly be using it. This would likely translate into EXHIBITION OF SPEED citations. Would doing this catagorize me as a future HYBRIDZ guy? Hummmm.....would you all frown and send me away or would I still be a welcome CLASSIC ZCAR CLUB member. (this should get some responces)

Zcarcreations Stainless Steel bolt kits opinions
Mark, When I was going through my 240 I purchased the SS bolt kit for the engine and was more than pleased with the purchase. Actually, I was surprised how well it was packaged including details about what goes where! I don't think you will be disappointed with their product. Tom
