I have an extra cable from a parted car if you are interested. Skipzcar@aol.com
  2. Peninsula Metal Finishing here in Orlando. It's not cad. It's yellow zinc chromate.

Have you checked the mode door actuator? It's on the left side of the heater box. Two vacuum hoses. One to open and one to close.
  4. I've done that swap. Your 82 L28 is nearly identical to the 78 L 28. Wire the 82 as though it were a 78 and it should work fine. If it will run on starting fluid then it sounds like a fuel starvation problem. Start checking fuel related items. Fuel pump, pressure regulator, filter, etc.
  5. John is right. You'll never regret buying a bigger trailer. You'll use the extra space.

One can only guess why only one tower has a shim. The only thing that really matters is if the cam can be rotated freely. It may be a bit more work but I'd back off all of the rockers and check to see if the cam is binding or not. It's important that the cam not bind in its bores as binding will destroy the cam towers in very short order.
  7. You should also check the cold start valve. I that is stuck open you get a constant flow of fuel.
  8. If your preference is ride quality you better stick with the rubber bushings. I changed all of them in my 78 and I'm pleased.
  9. I couldn't agree more. E your posts are very thoughtful. There is one more possible fix. There is a solid insert, not the wire type like heli-coil, that's made by Pioneer. It uses standard taps and drills and comes with a locking medium applied to it. I don't know how thick the plate is but it might be worth a try.
  10. I too am in Orlando. I may be able to help with the AC you're looking for. You can contact me direct at: Skipzcar@aol.com.
  11. Did you disconnect the linkages?
  12. On the heater/AC box under the dash there is a vacuum motor that controls the flap in the box. This device is on the left side of the heater/AC box and is clearly visible. It has two vacuum lines. It's proper name is "Mode door actuator". Check there first. Check the vacuum lines. Sometimes the actuator will stick do to age and a small nudge on the lever will break it loose. All of the vacuum lines should be replaced. The're old. I tried the 'cut the ends off ' trick and within days the ends would split again. A spool of that small hose is really cheap.

Great stories. Your first car stickes in your memory just like your first "you know". My first was a 53 Hudson Hornet. I had to give it to my best friend in high school because I wrecked his 51 Studebaker. We still laugh about climbing out of the windows. I turned the car over. A very large feed truck came along shortly and with a chain wraped around the Stude pulled it back onto its wheels and we drove it away. My first keeper was a 49 Merc coupe. BOY...I wish I still had that one!! And a few others. Way too many to remember. My current car is a 81ZX. It's a beater but it runs like it knows if it breaks it's going to the crusher. I also have a 78 Z that's won 1st place three years running at our annual Z Fest here in Orlando. Ahh.. the memories.
  14. Steve, squirt a little WD40 or whatever on them and grab them with a pair of channel locks. You can use the curved part of the jaws for leverage.

A picture would help. Of the spring, even a broken one.
  16. An easy way to check the blower itself is to run a hot wire straight to the motor. If the motor runs then you can start to check other areas. Wiring connectors. switch, etc.

Bryan.... Just kidding. Thirty year old bushings do deteriorate. I replaced mine with factory rubber bushings. I didn't want to add to the already stiff ride. "I'm never serious unless I should be."

SPINDLE PIN PULLER!!!!! This tool has been mentioned at least a bizillion times on this site. I just don't understand why some people have to do it the hard way. I sell these tools for the cost of one spindle pin. You use the right tool for the job and the spindle pin job is no harder than changing spark plugs. Check the classifieds.

Is it possible that someone removed the rivots and replaced them with nuts and bolts? I have a 75 280 that I'm parting. I'll check the spindle. If it's the same I'll let you know.
  23. I have a set from a 78 2+2 in excellent condition. If you don't find what you're looking for email me direct at Skipzcar@aol.com.

The problem could be in the sending unit in the tank. Or in the wiring from the tank unit to the gauge.
  25. I had a ZX that didn't have AC. To change the alt you will need to lower the sway bar.
