SU's are far superior (IMO) to the 4 barrel's out there. They give great mileage and performance. I love mine and am very impressed with there performance. I have various engine mods and the SU's are stock and keep up with the modifications I have with no problem at all. If you have surface rust you will most likely have interneral rust too. You might find rust on the floor boards when you get into the interior. Look at the batery tray and the hatch rear area too including the spare tire well and check the frame rails. It is great to hear you have an older Z. They are great cars and with love thay can continue to be great for a long time. They are also able to take a beating and survive very nicely as long as you take care of them.

What type of noise? The wheel offset must be very negative to get rubbing with 185's. You should be able to run 225's on 0 offset wheels (15") with out rubbing. I have 205/60/14 with a -12 offset and they do not rub. Is it the same color as the picture of my car in my avitar? If so I hope your body guy is wrong 'cause I was hoping to paint mine one day.

People use the zx master cyl. when they change their brakes over to larger ones but I have not heard about the booster being used. The larger mas. cyl. gives a better feel the smaller one gives a very firm feel.
  4. I run 206/60/14 on 14x7 with a -12 offset and do not have a rubbing problem. IMO the Yokohama ES 100 is the tire to go with in the 205/60 size, it is the most performance available with out going to a race tire. If you change to a 15" wheel the tire choices are much better.
  5. I drove a lot of dirt roads. I really learned a bunch about throttle lift and weight dianamics in a car. That was with my old car a `90 Saab 900 but I applied the same stuff to the Z and it is working great + all the stuff Jmortensen said.

I do not have caps on my slotted mags and think they look great.

When you are not doing a restoration that is exact or if you want parts better than oem (suspension ect...).
  8. I agree. Seat of the pants HP can often be infuenced by the wish of more HP. Real number do not lie and I do not think the difference can be felt between the stock and not stock set ups and if it does make more power at all then I bet it is no more than 2 HP which will not be felt with the a$$ dyno.
  9. I just finished watching the Ztherapy video and installing new carbs. One thing I learned is the stock air box with the integrated air horns flows as good or better than the aftermarket horns. They tested different types of brands including the ones MSA sells and found the stock unit to be superior. Bambikiller240 is correct. Regardless what you do use some type of horn or you will loose power. I use the stock unite and make plenty of power and will not ever change my set up because I do not think I will gain anything but better looks. If your intake backfires you do not have the carbs set up right and you could eventually have an engine compartment fire, problem with the SU's. the type of filter and horns should not cause that problem the tune of the carbs is the problem. Call Ztherapy and ask them some questions about the flow and tune of the carbs and try watching their video, it is worth it.
  10. I love my 920 gold 240. The color is very unique and vintage. You just do not see new car with colors like that and it looks so "correct" on the older Z's. I agree with zhead240, do not worry about the popularity of the color just go with what you want. Of course I am a little biased toward 920 gold.

I did a little front tire lifting this weekend.
  12. I went to Helena raced and came back. I drove 80-85 most of the way and had some small runs too 105-110 with my Z buddy over the pass between here and Helena plus the racing and I averaged 23 MPG. Not bad for the amount of lead footing I did. I have an 83 5 speed and a 3.9 diff. In town with out driving like a jack a$$ I get around 21 and on the road under the same driving conditions at a steady 75 I get 28-30. My friends Z is stroked (3.1) and has tripples with 12.5:1 compression and I can stay with him to 60. After that I get left behind but I think that is not bad for a L28/E31 combo with stock SU's. I might be wrong but I think I am making about 225 HP at the fly wheel. With the right tweeking and money in your pocket I bet you could get 250 HP at the flywheel with SU's on an L28. I definatly will stay with SU's. I do not think you can install tripples and set them up in 1.5 hours, or at least I know I can't. I think both are easy to keep in tune once they are set up but the set up time is less for SU's. Tripples have there place but for street cars and cars thet stay below 7k I think Su's are fine.
  13. Hey, thanks for all the post and words of encouragement, you guys are great!
  14. So for the last 4 years I was living with a woman (in sin of course) and she decided to leave the relation ship. She moved out in the beginning of March. She left me, the relationship, her dog, and all the friends we shared as a couple, she has no contact with any of us. On top of that 2 weeks after moving out she was in a new relationship with another guy. I am now cool with all of that but not LEAVING the dog. When I met her she had a big black Lab/Great Perrinies (spelling) cross (as seen in my gallery), now that dog is mine. I love the dog and have been living with her for the last 4 years. I would never let her go. My problem lies in the fact my X left her. I can deal with being left but dogs are innocent animals along for a ride through life that we provide them. Too walk out on her after 5 years of being together is horrible. So I am a little ticked off and venting at the moment. I made my X agree in writting that she (Shara, the dog) has been given to me so the X does not come to me in a year and try and take her back. Now I come home every day to 2 wonderfull dogs and a great black and white kitty. I was feeling empty now I realize I am full. As I stopped felling sorry for my self (although I am doing that a little here) life started to fall into place quite nicely. I have had an SU problem since I bought my Z a little over a year ago. I got new Ztherapy SU's and the car is increadible. The old SU's were so bad they were hiding the potential of the motor. I am making more power than I thought possible with the new Ztherapy carbs. More power is great and the desicision to get the carbs was a good one but the differential in the car is on its way out. But yesterday I got a call from a fellow Zer, he wanted me to go to a race in Helena MT (125 miles away). I said the diff in the car would blow befor I made it there. So he gave my a nearly perminate loan of his R190 LSD with 3:9 gearing. WOW, THIS JUST FELL INTO MY LAP, NEW DOG, NEW CARBS AND NOW A NISMO R190 LSD. LIFE IS GREAT HOW COULD I POSSIBLE FEEEL BAD WHEN THINGS ARE SO GOOD. To top it all off I have some of the best friend the world could offer and I keep meeting single women from 30 - 40 years old. Perfect I am 35! So in the end I lost one thing but gained too many things to list. The loss was not so bad anyway, we had been on a roller coaster for the last 2 years and it was time to call it quits. LIFE IS GOOD AND I HOPE EVERYONE ELSE'S CAN BE AS GOOD AS MINE IS TURING OUT TO BE.
  15. Yesterday I got a call from a Z friend asking if I wanted to goto Helena MT for an autox. Helena just happens to have the best autox area I have ever seen, it is a 6 acre lot with a 1.3 mile road course attached to it. It is used for the Highwy patrol as a training ground, all the pavement is in great shape and it is glass smoothe. So I went today and raced and the SU's performed perfectly. NO MORE CUTTING OUT AROUND RIGHT HAND CORNERS, LIFE IS GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME. I had originally told my friend I could not go due to my diff bearings being so bad, so he said if I pulled his 3.9 R190 with LSD from another race car that was wrecked I could use it as long as I like. So yesterday I pulled the diff, yanked my r200 4.38 and put in the R190. Much better gearing for my car and motor and the clutch packs are in better shape too, it really hooks up. So in the last 4 days I went from a Z with horrible carbs and a noisy, too low, oversized (R200) diff to a Z with new killer SU's and a Nismo R190 diff with the right gearing. The change has been drastic and all for the better. My friend used to race my car on occasion before I bought it from one of his friends. I let him drive the car and he could not believe the power difference. He has a 3.1 stroker with 12.5:1 commpression that runs on 112 occtane and races in Emod. His car is fast probably around 300 HP. I can keep up with him through 1 and 2 then he starts to pull away in 3rd. So I am getting the same 0-60 times as his car but in the 1/4 he would kill me, that is where the strokers shine. Befor the Ztherapy SU's I could not even dream of staying with him to 60. I really think the old SU's were masking what the motor had in it. I am making power to nearly 7K, before it stoped at 5700. I used to think the E31 head was stock now I think it must have bigger valves and a larger cam and possibly some porting. So life is good and I recomend Ztherapy SU's to anyone considering triples or having troubles with there present SU's. Oh yea the service was great too!
  16. Sounds good to me. I will let you know how they work on the next race which is the 31st of this month. Chickenwafer, I had 4 bolt SU's originally so that is what I got from Ztherapy. I believe if you have 3 bolts for cores then you will get 3 bolt SU's from them unless you work something out with them. I'm sure bruce knows the answer better than I. The carbs are modified a little, they incorperate roller bearings and other innovations that the originals did not have. They reengineer them onto a better more reliable carb. They are not ported or anything like that though. I highly recomend them. I had the option to go with a Mikuni tripple set up (used) for nearly the same price, I am so glad I went with the Ztherapy instead, baisically they are like having brand new carbs.
  17. Wll I guess mine is correct for the year then. I like having things like that correct even though the suspension and motor are not period correct.
  18. I have a series II (1-`71) but I do not have a locking door. The gas door has a latck that turns a tab so it does not come open but no lock. I allways thought it was stock but I guess not. Now I would like to have a locking door.
  19. I just go my Ztherapy SU's in the mail yesterday and put them in today. It only took about 1.5 hours to get them in and tuned. I watched the video last night which was a big help. I took the car out and it feels like a hole new motor. The motor now pulls to 6500K+ or so where as before it started to loose power at 5500 or so. The power through out the power band has increased noticably. The old SU's must have been in bad shape. I hit 2nd and the car spun the tires and launched forward like never befor, usually the tires barely spin, just a chirp. It feels like I gained 25HP, that could be more than reality but it feels great. The idel is much smoother and it sits right around 850. I'v allways assumed the car had a stock E31 cam in it but it sure pulls hard higher in the revs now like mabey a stage 2 or something or mabey it is the SM needles; I just do not know. The idel has allways been a little lumpy, I just though it was the carbs and the stae of tune, mabey it is a bigger cam. I am happy with the carbs though. Now I get to see how they do on the autox course. The old ones cut out around every right hand corner. If these don't do that then I will be so happy.
  20. They are not as popular as the 2 seaters but if you like it then that should not matter. I have a 240z and love it and would not trade it for the world (well mabey an F430) but I have allways wanted a first year 2+2. I think they would be great cars for road trips, fold the seats and have some exta room for lots of stuff or mabey the dog, ect... They are heavier but if you get the motor to produce 250HP it will still be a fast car.

http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=14833&cat=500&page=1 Well as you can see from the picture my car is very 70's and I love it. I am shooting for a 70's racer look in the future with flares and such. But the suspension and engine/drivetrain will be updated to modern stuff (l28 block/e31 head and l28crank will remain forever.) as time goes by to stay competitive on the autox course.
  22. I think they look great, do it!
  23. When can a Z loose its Zness. IMO they stop being a Z when a big chunk of American iron is placed under the hood. IMO the inline 6 is the heart of the Z, no v-8's or 6's or turboed 4's and rotery power plants. I do prefer a N/A engine too, a 3.2 litre stroker is ok with me as well. The IRS should remain nissan, no Corvette stuff. Why not buy a Corvette instead of putting an entire Corvette drive train into a Z body that must be highly modified just to make it all fit? I guess it is a compliment that people choose to make a Corvette looke like a Z though.
  24. Technically all Nissan cars that are calld Z's are just that a Z car. However, I am only interested in owning an older Z like a series I 240.The z's past 1978 just do not do much for me. I have a series II from 1-`71 but I would love to get a low vin `70 one day. Probably the only car I would get rid of the Z for is a Lotus Elise. To me it is a modern day Z. It is light no frills and handels great, a true sports car; however it is not like the Z in price at 45K but it is like an original Z in price when compared to a 911 or any of it other compitition. I would love to see Nissan produce a 240 again wheather it is a retro or not, just following the original Z's recipie for as sports car like the Elise. Back to the topic, I think all Nissan Z's deserve to be called a Z and I am glad to see the Z name alive and I hope it stays that way for ever. I really like having a car that belongs at the top of a long family tree (well it is not as long as some cars but over time it will get there). Having new Z's out there helps spark interest in the older ones that most of us own, there is nothing wrong with a little good publicity.

I just ordered ZTherapy SU's to replace my SU's that are going on over 20 years untouched. I am planning on doing some head work on the car this winter. I have an L28 with and E31 head and will be running stock SU's with SM needles (so I guess that part is not stock). As far as I can tell the pistons are dished (I have never had the head off and the person that owned the car before took that knowledge to the grave). I would like to know what the limit of the SU's are. In other words how far can I go on the head work before I surpass the SU's abilities. I would like to go with a cam about the equivalent of the MSA stage 3, port and polish the head and go to larger valves and raise the compression to 10:1 or so. So the motor should stay at or below 7K when autocrossed or any other time it is driven hard. Do you think the stock SU's are capible of that or should I not go as far with the head? I really could not get a straight answer from the ZTherapy guys. Are they capible of making 225-250 HP with an L28? I do not want to go to tripples, I just like the SU's (can't give a good reason, I just do). Thanks for any help.
