These things are exceptionally reliable. Parts are cheap and the work isn't overly technical. Rust is the thing to worry about...expensive and time consuming to fix.

...no worries on the noob factor... Go have a look at zhome.com (a web-site run by one of the stalwarts here). It has an excellent buying a z-car section. The big issue on these is rust. In Tucson, not as much of a problem as up here in Toronto, but a problem nonetheless... Use the search function liberally on the forums here and you will find a trove of info. I would suggest finding a Z car specialist and having them give the car a good run through. It will be money well spent. Good luck with the potential acquisition.

Time for a new DD
Interestingly, the Audi A5 was a quattro and was awesome...very nimble... And I really hadn't thought about the inline 6 vs. V6. Better harmonics, smoother power application...hmmm...good point. I'm likely only going to get a 36 month lease, so maintenance likely won't be a major factor. I will only be out of warranty (based on mileage) for a short period at the tail end (likely the 3rd year) and most of these vehicles are well-built. Not sure I can talk myself into a Ford...and SHO in Canada is not that cheap...$47,529 with $2,500 delivery discount (compared at $38,595 in the US)...unless the dealer's going to really move, it's still quite expensive compared to the competition (lines up with the G35 for performance and bells & whistles)...

Time for a new DD
OK, my lease is coming up on my C230 Sport Sedan and time for a new daily driver. The options are: 1. 2010 Mercedes C300 - 228 hp / 6 speed manual / RWD 2. 2010 BMW 328i - 230 hp / 6 speed manual / RWD 3. 2009 Infinity G37X Sedan AWD Sport - 328 hp / 7 speed automatic 4. 2010 Subaru WRX STi Outlier was the Audi A5 with the 2.0T engine. Loved the test drive but the lease rates from Audi are idiotic, so no go. Some key considerations: - I live in Canada - RWD is not an impediment as I am a Canadian and I'm always shod in snow tires in the winter. - I'm performance oriented, but I'm a reasonably senior corporate guy (the Subaru is a bit of a square peg so to speak). Thoughts, opinions, etc?

Sorry to hear about your dad...not the way we wish people to enter the game, but welcome to the world of Datsun's nonetheless. Wow...body looks really good...must have missed the clothespin accessories at Black Dragon though... When you have specific questions, search the board. There is a wealth of information and the bulk of general questions have already been asked and answered. Not sure a search will turn up anything on clothes pins though... Welcome aboard...

Tips for working with repair shops
Pretty simple. Find a Z specialist. They're out there. They will know how to source parts that are off the grid or the usual suspects for where to grab parts otherwise (motorsport auto/black dragon/etc.). Reach out to your local club and they'll hook you up.

Help In Buying First Z Car
Safety is a relative thing... They don't have airbags or abs, so if that is the definition, your are SOL... As for safety relative to the vehicles of the day, they're probably ok. As stated above, have the frame rails checked out as it could be very scary if they let go. Also check the brake system and look to renew/update to ensure safety. Good luck.

Mystery of the shattered hatch glass...
It would require a mistake on the installation side or possibly some rust developing along the edges of the hatch. A friend of mine had a similar issue on his 300ZX where a small amount of rust put tension on the glass and when he hit a bump, the pane developed a 12 inch crack. If the pressure had built up sufficiently, I suppose the glass could have shattered as in your case.

78 280z problem
Out of my depth a bit but it sounds like a fuel pressure problem more than an injector problem... These cars are prone to issues with the fuel pump or, more than likely, crud build-up in the fuel filter do junk in the tank. I'd go in the following order: 1. Check the fuel filter (or just swap in a new one...cheap and a good idea). 2. Check fuel pressure after the pump (on the 280z you may be clogged before the pump). 3. If fuel pressure is good, search for posts from sblake01...a good amount of information on fuel injection stuff. Good luck.
