HELP!!! (painting problems)
I had ziebart on the panels when i started. I grinded it off with wire wheels. There was a film so I removed that with turpentine and mineral spirits. Then i cleaned the tough spots with dupont metal prep (blue stuff) then put por15 on it. That was over the weekend... then today I cleaned the main areas with the metal prep again and sprayed a few layers of the etching primer. I painted right over the por15 and it stuck... Im not going to do any body panels with por 15. Im just doing the engine bay and wheel wells where i cant reach rust. Then when im done cleaning everything, its going to the body shop where it will be shot with the normal primer and body work will start. Please let me know how im doin

HELP!!! (painting problems)
I had my z sandblasted and now im cleaning up what sandblasting didnt take off and then im painting it with an etching primer and por 15. First off, is it ok to use etching primer from a rattle can. Also is por 15 ok to cover up rust that i cant get rid of in cracks and corners and stuff? Im first cleaning the metal with metal prep and then im spraying on a few layers of the etching primer. Im not using a painting booth. What happens if I spray the etching primer over some rust or flash rust? Because there was some rust that I couldnt get off and when I cleaned with the metal prep, and some areas turned yellow which I think is flash rust. Im just worried if I leave it the way I did it now, the rust might come back through to haunt me. Should i sand down the etch coat and double check if all the rust is off? Thanks for any help, Im really concerned about the way im doing this. Btw the areas I have done so far is the very front, wheel wells, and under fender areas. Im going to do the engine bay tomorrow.

my resto =)
Unfortunatly the body is at the sandblaster right now waiting to be done on monday so there is no way I could work on getting the ziebart off. What im going to do is that when it gets back im going to scrape off the rest and sand down whatever rust is underneath. The bottom is also getting sandblasted but im not too worried about the ziebart there because the floors and rockers are being replaced. For wheels im not too sure what I want to do yet. Thinking about going pretty wide but I dont know. And for the interior, I have pretty big plans but nothing too crazy. Ill just leave it at that for now =) lets just say this is my parents buisness... www.awe1.com

Some of you may know about my restoration of my 71 240z. It was my dads and he gave it to me to restore. Last week I finished stripping it and It went to the shop to have the engine, tranny, and exhaust removed. Also all of the lines and stuff were remove. Right now it is waiting to be sandblasted for monday. The guy said the sand he uses is really fine so it will be ok. I got some other parts back from the blaster and realized blasting wont take off ziebart =( so I have been cleaning up those parts by heating up the paint with a torch and scraping it off and using a wire wheel with my drill and dremel. When the car is back from sandblasting, I will clean up like I did will the other parts and take off all of the ziebart that wasnt taken off during sandblasting. Then, the body shop with shoot it will a rust stopping primer and body work will start. Unfortunatly I dont know how to do body work so I have to pay for someone to do it. Since it would be really expensive he will probably be using quite a bit of bondo =( As long as it looks good, ill be happy. I plan on getting it painted gunmetal with a front air dam, and side skirts, with chrome bumpers. While the body work is getting done, I am going to clean up the engine and getting it looking good while its out. I think im going to get all the small pieces such as the door strikers and brackets zinc plated. I might be getting steel braided brake and fuel lines so if I decide to upgrade stuff I just have to change the fittings instead of the full lines. I cant wait until its done. I left out a lot of stuff that im gunna do so I might update later. Feel free to post comments, questions, or suggestions for stuff to do. I think im doing the restoration right by totally stipping, blasting, and stuff. Im not too happy that bondo will probably be used but there is nothing that I can do about it. Other than that, It should be great.

It Was a Calif car
left my house yesterday and is getting the engine, tranny, exhaust, and lines taken out. Then going to sandblaster / media blaster. After that, its going to the body shop. Then im reassembling the rest and then im a very happy guy =). Thinking about getting the exhaust upgraded with the headers and either 2 or 2.5 inch exhaust with ansa tips, better air cleaners, possibly a 4.11 r200 diff. I had my carbs rebuilt. Then Im getting some sound stuff... like a sub sunk into the wheel well. Racing seats with harnesses so im held in good, dynomatting the interior, aftermarket steering wheel and shift knob, front lip and rear spoiler. Im putting foglights behind the grill. Thinking about going with supra gunmetal for the color but a deep yellow has been on my mind. I think the gunmetal would look meaner and I wouldnt get tired of it.
