Anyone have a CAD drawing of an S30?
Hi 26th-Z, You mentioned you could provide a copy of the 2D ACAD drawing you did to those who wanted it. (.dwg or .dxf is fine) Could you send me a copy to my email address? Many Thanks. Hi mdbrandy, As mentioned before, I've looked into doing a 3D solid/surface model of an HS30 in the past; there's a company here in Sydney that I know (I'm a self employed mech eng working with industrial design firms) that can do EXACTLY what you're after; check their website: New Dawn 3D -> http://www.nd3d.com/ I'll give 'em a call next week and see if I can't call in a few favours. I'm pretty sure their scanner can handle things as large as a car. As my car has a front air dam and rear spoiler (check my Avatar) it may not be the best subject for a "baseline" scan, but I'm sure I could get one of the guys in our club (Z Car Club of Sydney) with a HS30 std body to offer it up for scanning! If not maybe a model might be an alternative (eg 1/24th scale Fujimi plastic model). Wadayathink? Will let you know how I go. Mark

Anyone have a CAD drawing of an S30?
I think it'll be great if you get the CFD analysis of an S30 done! I have been tempted to solid model a 240Z for ages for just this purpose, but since I had no contacts in the industry prepared to do the CFD on a contra-deal never put the effort in. Perhaps Mr Camouflage in Perth can help you with the 3D model. Check out his comment in this thread from a while back, where he mentioned he was working on a 3D model, and had used it to create an animated GIF for his avatar. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7405 Mark

Rick.. Click on the following link http://carfiche.com/fiche/s30/index.pl?2:g:6 Item # 12 is the threaded hex spacer. Item # 11 is the wing head bolt. For item #15 you can use std M8 screws. You'll need 2 of each of these. Unbrako is a brand name. Your bolt guy in Rocky should know them. M8 socket head cap screws from Unbrako also come in black, which look better than stainless on the orange air cleaner box. Also check if you've got the gaskets (item #10) glued onto the air cleaner box...otherwise you'll need to get these from Warren too. He has the same Nissan microfiche on CD-ROM, so just quote him the partnumbers (if you can read them) Good Luck! Mark

New Z owner
Remedy...I can second a recommendation for CSC in Burwood. First had dealings with them when I had to get new jets/needles for the 1.5" SUs I set up on my first Datsun (1600) back in the mid 80's. Ask for a guy called Alan Jackson...what he don't know ain't worth knowing! Their website is www.carburettorservice.com.au SUMidel are also really helpful, but generally they're into the real SU's (British type) not Hitachi SUs. Mark

Rick...glad to hear you got an air cleaner box from a Sydneysider. Brett's a good bloke, I used to see him often at the Syd Z Car Club monthly meetings before he headed O/S to US. I also know Warren pretty well too (I helped him judge the 280ZX, Z31 and Z32 std class at the Nationals over Easter)...if by any chance he cannot source the bolts you need you can always use long socket head cap screws (Unbrako) instead. (I have been looking for the same bolt for a while now too...but the Unbrako works just fine...see attached thumbnail). If you can't source these Unbrakos in the vicinity of your "Capricorean paradise", I'd be happy to pick up a couple more of these bolts next time I'm out and about and send 'em up to you...both Blackwoods and Coventry Fasteners are just a couple of kms from my place. But do you have the threaded hex spacer these go into? That's harder to source! Mark

Rick...forgot to ask one question. Does your car have A/C? One of the main reasons for buying the orange car with sunroof was I learnt from the previous 240Z I had 15 years ago that they get really hot during a Sydney summer. As 240's never came with A/C I figured the sunroof might cool me down a bit (bloody forgot that 15 years ago I had hair on top; so now I'm cooler but getting wicked cranium tans whenever I forget my cap!). Must be bloody hot in Yeppoon! If you have A/C how does the sunroof handle the sealing issue? Mark

Thanks Dogma420...I'll keep my eyes open for cars with these sunroofs here in Oz and try and determine if one will fit! But frankly, I'm kinda resigned to keeping the Coenen sunroof, as it is arguably an "original" feature of the car! Rick...sounds like your 260Z and my 240Z were quite similar originally! Mine was originally an Auto with tan interior too; body colour was #113 Metallic Green. She's now Chrysler Vitamin C Orange (that great Valiant Charger orange from back in the 70's...check out my Avatar!) and the ineritor trim is also now 100% black. Used a plastic/vinyl spray paint from SEM to do the trick! After about a year of putting up with the Auto tranny band/clutch slipping more and more in 2nd, along with excessive backlash from the std 3.5 R180 diff, I swapped over to an early model 280ZX/Skyline 5-speed and 3.9 diff. The engine has been thanking me for it ever since - better fuel econ, more RWHP etc.! Anyway, thanks heaps for your heads up re the possible windscreen rust probs. Will keep you posted on how we go with the custom headlining fitout. Am sure I'll learn some more tricks about how to improve the Coenen sunroof too, and will pass them on to you. Take care guys! G'Day Rick, Great minds think alike mate! I also use a type of piping in the sealing of the sunroof. It's a "C" section neoprene extrusion which I bought from a Sydney Coy called "Grippy Rubber Products" (specialist manufacturers in early model auto rubbers in Syd). I "clip" the section into the roof hole (NB: piping not shown in the photo) and used a neoprene contact cement for sealing SCUBA wetsuits to join the ends. On the sliding roof section I bonded felt to the rubber sealing gasket, which reduces the rubber-rubber friction problems when opening/closing. Grippy told me the non-UV stalised rubber will probably degrade over time, but I've got no idea how long, as I've had to replace it already (on the freeway coming back from the Z Car Nationals in Goulburn over Easter I had to close the sunroof, and the seal flew off !) If you want photos of my design, I can email them to you. BTW, I notice your Z seems to have the original vinyl trim on the sunroof. Mine has dodgy material and have booked her in to have a custom vinyl headliner made up. If you "Precious" has original headliner perhaps you could email me some shots of how the dealer sovled trim details in areas around the rear drain pipes, sunvisor mounts etc! In exchange would be happy to send a copy of the 1950 Coenen patent (in English) I downloaded! Not real helpful, but the diagrams are interesting. Cheers Mark

Hi Rick, I have also been searching for ANYTHING related to a Coenen sunroof for a while, which I have in a '73 240Z I bought in SA 18 months ago. Photo is attached...does yours look like this? Usual problems with it (leaks in heavy rain and whenever i wash the car), but I've managed to solve most problems by installing some decent drainage using std water reticulation hosing parts you get from the garden shop! Have decided to keep it as the car is fairly neat and rust free in the roof, and the previous owner reckoned it was installed as a dealer option in 73.. Did you manage to get hold of the original manufacturer in Germany? Mark
