Hope this helps---really don't know if I understand completely the issue you are having. Jim D. "Zup"

Ha! Jim K.--- You are so right on all counts---- Photos don't do them justice---what you can't see in the headlamps is the huge area of yellow zinc/cadmium plate metal that forms the buckets---like gold--complete with Japanese characters (Kanji-???)--the largest expanse of this type of material and finish on these cars. I did hold the turn signals up to the sunlight and basked in the sparkle from the facets before I took the photo. It was damn near intoxicating! You should be an authority on this coming Winter thing----(uuggghh already!) Jim A.---- Thanks Jim! I take 2 baby aspirin a day as prophylaxis already! I'll be there at ZCON '15 to meet you in person and shake your hand. Hope to personally meet and greet as many from this forum as possible while there----another blessing of opportunity for this Z nut. Buttercup has a long way to go to be ready for ZCON Memphis----it is possible but not likely. I have almost everything I need but truly correct fasteners and a ton of time and money. Jim K. (ZKars) is helping me with that in a future pleasant surprise sort of way that I will let him announce when he is ready. Believe me--his project is something to anticipate! I certainly don't know about a stock class win---there are some absolutely gorgeous cars out there that have been impeccably gone through by persons much more knowledgeable than me. Buttercup will feature some very rare parts, and will be as accurate as I know to do with information gleaned from members of this forum, but she came to me in parts-- completely disassembled. Quite a disadvantage from cars that we purchased by original owners and faithfully kept. Zup's Zilver (Silver '73--6/73 build date HLS30-167424) will make the journey for sure if Buttercup doesn't. If Branson Z Fest knew anything about stock class Zilver will be presentable--- with the exception of the round tops and removed smog pump paraphernalia. I'm planning on the entire show from day one to the end as it may be my last. I didn't get into these cars for show-- it has just sort of happened because I was fortunate to find really nice examples that were advertised for sale from right here in the classifieds that deserved restoration/preservation. I've always loved the lines of the Z and when it came to a project car I wasn't going to do another Corvette or Camaro or Cuda or Mustang--all of my friends have them and they are wonderful, beautiful, powerful cars from my childhood--they are just not for me. I remembered the Z from my early college days and it filled the bill completely. Classic lines and surprisingly strong performance from such a simple no frills package. I contend that they are still the most inexpensive (not cheap) true sports car of all time to restore and I love 'em enough to take on 2 and try to do justice to their heritage. siteunseen--- I'd still keep the flashlights around if I were you. These dome lights are bright enough to attract moths and millers but that's about it---not exactly high intensity if you know what I mean--- O.K.---end of ramble--- Jim D. "Zup"

In preparation for re-assembly of "Buttercup"---1970 (7/70 build date) HLS30-07032 919 Yellow 240Z. :classic: Fully restored side markers. NOS headlight assemblies with original Koito bulbs, NOS turn signal assemblies, NOS license plate lamp, NOS Dome lamp, NOS Inspection lamp. Years of searching and collecting for this----had to share a photo of them-----I'm excited! Jim D. 'Zup"
  4. His website indicates that it is plug and play for his system. Reading the installation instructions and the parts information, the early 240Z is listed among the applications.
  5. New OE Fits Nissan Datsun 240Z 260z 280z 510 Clutch Master | eBay I have purchased from Carmella555555 in the past and have nothing but very satisfactory experiences to report. This is a 5/8" bore Nabco clutch master cylinder and will not interfere with your washer bottle.

Hi Dan and thank you! Yes, carpet will be from "Chester & Herod"! https://www.facebook.com/chesterandherod1924/timeline?ref=page_internal Here's a quote from their website--- "Datsun 240z carpet 1970 in Hollywood One of our most exciting moments came in 1970, when the owner created floor mats for the Datsun (then secret) 240z car. After making the carpet, he was is promptly asked to keep his mouth shut. Only 5 people in the country knew about the 240z." I figure if these people were the selected shop to install carpet into the just released 240Z-- (which originally for the earliest cars, came with rubber mats only--RE: Arne and Mike B.)--then it should be exactly what I need. We had a significant discussion of jute and carpet on the forum several years ago. I am just now getting closer to it. As for the jute-- I purchased it from "The Roadster Factory"---Carpet: Carpet Underfelt Kits And Underfelt Material, TR2, TR3, TR4, TR4a, TR250, TR6 :(page 38) This stuff appears nearly identical to the original jute under-padding found in our Z'z, and is sold as replacement for British cars of the same vintage. (I.E. Triumph, Spitfire, MG and the like) I purchased the roll goods rather than precut, as the shapes necessary for the Z cars differ. When time comes for the install of the jute I will post up photos and patterns taken from the remnants of originals I have collected over the years. All of this is meant as a resource, of sorts, for anyone wishing to fit their Z with original materials. Jim D. "Zup"

Carl, I'll never be able to contribute as much as you have done to further the knowledge of these cars we love so much. Without this website and the posts by members here, we would all be at a loss. Many, many Thanks to You Sir! Jim D. "Zup"

Thanks Chas! Should be easier for you to get. It is made by Wurth--a German automotive parts and accessories supplier/manufacturer. It has to be imported to get it to the states. I dare say it will be less costly than Murder mat for you.

After 8 years of fits and starts restoring "Buttercup", a 7/70 build date 240Z (#7032) it has come down to the interior, which was completely stripped and the old tar mat removed. While "Murdermat", "Fatmat", and the like are what are commonly used as upgrade/replacement--- I wanted the original deal--- as close to the factory fitment as possible. After lots of net searching I finally found what I thought would be as near the original asphaltic mat as I was apt to find. I bought the mat from AutoAtlanta FOR PORSCHE: WU890100, WU8 901 00 - READY TO SHIP - (WURTH FLOOR PAN TAR SOUND DEADENING INSULATING KIT) , a purveyor of restoration parts for Porsche autos: I used a roll of rosin paper to trace the original floor mat outlines---- from the interior of another '70 240Z I had purchased as a parts car---- and cut out the patterns , traced it again and cut the new mat out with scissors. Here's how that looks: Next I proceeded to install the mat using a heat gun and a couple of hand tools to shape the mat to the sheet metal contours of the floor pans, transmission tunnel and rear hatch floor: The mat has an adhesive and a release paper and when heated can be formed easily to the contours of the metal. It took several hours to create the patterns and do the install. I deviated from installing the mat on bare metal by painting all of the interior first, but the mat will be painted the body color as was done originally with a complete re-spray of the interior . All in all I am satisfied with the product and offer this to assist to anyone wanting to do the same in the restoration of their Z. Paint should follow in the next few days and I will post up a few photos when that has been completed. Jim D. "Zup"

This reminds me of the quest for the center chrome trim strips for the tail lights----that took about 5 years for it to happen, but it did thanks to member Randy Lewis, aka "Randalla", and they turned out perfect! I am interested in finding a source for the fabrication of these strips as well, Hardway. The 70-72 types for the front and rear bumpers and over-riders are readily available, but the 73 versions are not. Steve Nix (nix240z) has done fantastic reproduction work on all the other rubber bits for our cars, but has told me he is limited in the size of the pieces he can reproduce. The rubber on my 73 is in really good condition currently, but they are already 40+ years old and eventually WILL need to be replaced. If DIY can be done and look acceptable I'm for it---and I don't doubt your abilities, as I have seen your posts and the great attention to detail that you achieve--but I'm inclined to think that a rubber fabrication company with the proper equipment could do the job for considerably less than the Ebay prices. I haven't researched for fabricators---maybe some members will have suggestions or leads. Maybe interest can be drummed up as regards a "Group Buy" that would reduce the cost and make these available again for all who need them at "reasonable" pricing. Here's hoping that this thread starts something, and thanks to you for bringing it up! Jim D. "Zup"

  16. Go here and pay the price--- Datsun 240Z 1972 73 Choke Cable Lever Mounting Bracket | eBay These are made by Art Singer ---a member here---and are the easiest permanent fix for your problem. I have a 73 Z I did this to and believe me it is worth every penny. Choke lever action--- once the cable is lubricated (do it while you have everything apart)-- is effortless--- smooth as silk! An added benefit is you can remove your console very quickly and easily anytime you need to without the choke cable mount in the stock mounting pins. I made one years ago, but Art's are very well made and it come complete with everything you need. Jim D. "Zup"

I think of you often Arne, and miss the once seemingly endless stream of knowledgeable and thoughtful posts you provided or enhanced. Your blog " Living Z Life" inspired me to switch from a "refresh" to a "restore" for my 7/70--- a project still ongoing---and has helped immensely. Happy Trails to you and the 911. Jim D. "Zup" Life

Carl Beck's website--- the Z Car Home Page ---lists WHITE for the 72 and earlier model years in the US and Canada. BEIGE was offered in 73 and the listing shows an asterisk for the Canadian interior colors with the notation that "Beige was just off white". I have no personal experience with white interior colors, but would hazard the opinion that they were all of the same color/shade. Jim D. "Zup"

Very good advice you've given here Dan! midman--- I just installed new panels this last weekend. Here is what I did. Articulate the clips to match the panel holes and the holes in the door before applying sufficient pressure to drive the clip into the cup. I mean these clips must be lined up correctly before applying pressure or you risk damaging the vinyl from the head of the clip, as there is only a thin layer of non-woven batting between the clip head in the door panel hole and the backside of the vinyl. Install the door panel from the lock knob portion of the panel forward to the front of the window frame in a hinging motion using firm downward pressure with the window rolled slightly up so you can see it from the top of the door. Once you have the top of the panel securely pressed into position work down from the top to the bottom of the panel. Crouch on your knees and/or lay on your back as required and pivot the clips in the door panel hole so that you can visually determine that the clip lines up with the cup in the door. Use the rubber butt end of a hammer centered over the clip as you push firmly to drive the clip into the cup. It took me a little while to get the hang of it, but all went smoothly, and the new panels look great! As Dan said---not meaning to overstate the obvious--- just passing along my recent experience Best of luck---you deserve it after fighting with the dash! Jim D. "Zup"

I bought one from Courtesy Nissan around 9 years ago. It is still in the original shipping box---never removed---and stored inside the house in the horizontal position. Your post has me a little worried that mine may have issues that I had never given a thought about. I may unbox it this weekend and give it the once over to see. If I do, I'll post up some photos. Ventured guess--- 1. Warped glove box door inner panel from 40 years of the glove box light and spring assembly pushing against the inner panel. It sets a bend into the glove box door that usually creates a gap that is widest near the switch. 2. A mounting tab on either the dash or the control panel (or both) is bent or otherwise misaligned as it appears the gap closes down and is closer to fitting properly to the left side of the control panel. Dang, I sure hope you can adjust it out---NOS dashes are a very rare and quite expensive item now, and I am sure the rest of your Z is very nice or you wouldn't have made the plunge for one when you purchased it! May the Z gods be with you! Jim D. "Zup"
