240Z Resto - 01/1970 Car
To give credit,that photo is the same photo shown on the PMB Performance site. http://www.pmbperformance.com/other-brakes/240Z_Calipers.html I had them do the front calipers on my 73 after reading a thread by "conedodger" (Rob Sime) on this forum and they do absolutely beautiful work. (Porsche owners are usually pretty finicky about looks) I don't think they could be done better anywhere. The plating is sacrificial zinc that protects the caliper according to their description of the process they use for restoration. Not inexpensive, but I don't worry about my brakes. Jim D. "Zup"

New Carpet Question for 240z
The only place I know of where the carpets are pre-cut for the metal tabs and have the snaps already installed for the firewall is Chester and Herod: www.autockckms.com They were the original suppliers of carpeting for the 240z. Back when they were first introduced into the US market with rubber mats NOT carpet Chester and Herod was selected as the provider for these cars to satisfy the demand for carpeting. They have the original patterns and after purchasing a set for my 73 240Z I found that I was satisfied and happy to have the original suppliers carpets in my restoration. The base carpet set is loop type and many would say is not very high quality. Nonetheless it is very close to the original, which wasn't very high quality either. If you want to upgrade the quality you can get wool---but it is considerably more expensive. If you give them a call talk to "Jim". Somewhat related----- This topic stirred me into cleaning an old original inspection light I have. In the process I noticed this glyph on one of the mounting tabs. It has the text "NILES" on a banner on a globe held by a crab! Does anyone know if this crab is culturally symbolic???

Cataloging 240z factory manufacture paint marks
Dan, Here's a photo of the original paint marking on the transmission that I masked off to save on my 7/70----there was no way that this marking was going to be bead blasted away to oblivion. (please pardon the glaringly blue oil pan---a big mistake on my part when I did it and it will be corrected) Hope this helps you a little on this topic. Your absolutely fantastic car has helped me immeasurably-----I find myself burrowing into every photo you post to see more and more the painstaking and uncompromising level of restoration you have accomplished. When I am looking for what is "correct" I go to your car, followed by Kats magnificent documentation, every time. There are simply no finer examples. Jim D. "Zup"

Need Flexplate Source
The photo on the left is the plate found between the .manual transmission and the engine block. No experience with the one on the right soooo---I dunno about it. Site--- Did your photos get reversed or are you have difficulty with the morning coffee/ wake-up routine??

Courtesy Nissan changed!?
Sad and bad news folks if this is the case! The bookmark I have used for years no longer works the way it used to for www.Courtesyparts.com -- The website has changed and no longer has a tab for the 240/280/280zx. These cars are not even mentioned. Model years now only go back to 1984. Parts still show up when you search, but now it seems you will have to have the part number for even minor replacement parts like wipers and oil filters. Seems as though one our oldest friends is leaving us. Someone tell me this is just a bad dream I am having--- Jim D. "Zup"

My 73 240Z
Here's a thread from 2009 that gives a little more insight into the placement of the timing indicator plates on the 240Z. Early cars (70/71/early 72)---right side Later cars (late 72/73)---left side http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/30515-timing-indicator-plate-location/ The plate you purchased is for the earlier cars, sourcing a 73 plate is not easy but they are out there. My 73 240Z
Hi nomuken--- For comparison with your photo, here is a photo of my 73 240Z engine which shows the timing tab and 2 groove pulley. (taken in preparation for ZCON 2015) I think you have the wrong type timing tab for your 73. It is differently shaped from those intended for the earlier cars, and one of the tab mounting bosses in your timing cover appears to have a broken bolt. I am not sure if your pulley is original or not, but it does look somewhat different on the block side of the pulley groove. 1972 240z Restoration Thread
So that's how you keep your java warm in Scotia! Sounds pretty darn sweet for waking-up from a three year slumber----nothing really surprises me anymore from these cars---they just love to run. A good source seat covers would be from Mike McGinnis at Banzai Motorworks. www.zzxdatsun.com He uses the same suppliers that were used for the Vintage Z program cars that were restored by Nissan, so they must be pretty close in authenticity. Mike is picky when it comes down to Z car stuff so you could trust him to provide good goods. Jay Ataka at www.jdm-car-parts.com offers covers (that I believe are made in Japan) and surely they are well made. Jay knows his stuff when it comes to reproduction items. His are actually broken down into 70/71 and 72/73 styles. The earlier70/71 covers accommodate the round seatback adjustment knob configuration, whereas the 72/73 version is adapted for the leverrecliner mechanism found on the later cars. I intend to use Jay's covers on my 7/70 car when it comes time to do them, primarily for this differentiating feature. Jim D. "Zup"

How I refinished the horns in my '73 240Z
Careless-- Here's a little more discussion on the horns. The first post contains a link to an additional earlier discussion regarding them. Seller "nikkibid 1972" on E-Bay has sold gasket and screw sets in the past. Contacting him may be helpful if you don't make your own. Hi All: Attached is Zilver's score sheet from ZCON 2015 held in Memphis this summer. Don't know if this is "par for the course" judging at an international event, but here it is. Sparse on ways to improve. Short nice comments, but there is a feeling the judging was superficial at best-----maybe it was just too dogamn hot to spend time writing. I need help with a Dime wagon
Hi Charles! I've found it best to call them first thing in the morning (~ 7:30 a.m. CDT) with the part numbers at the ready. They'll do a quick inquiry to their system and can usually tell with some certainty whether or not the part/s is/are available. Sometimes, if it is an extensive list, they will call back with that information rather than endure a long hold. At times I've tried to order parts that aren't readily available using their internet storefront, but I've had long waits only to find the part wasn't available using that method. Rebuilding new brake calipers
"Conedodger" posted a thread about restored brake calipers for our 240's--- www.pmbperformance.com Core business is Porche and Ferrari brakes---but they love the Z'z too! Not cheap, but they are fantastically well done. Porterfield pads and shoes. New caliper pistons. Look like new and perform as well. Very happy with the set I received from them--highly recommended---your brakes aren't a good place to save money! Jim D. "Zup"

[2015] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
Thank you Jim for another very enjoyable outing with the Z'z! The weather was warm in stark contrast to the sweltering temps and humidity in Memphis. A very nice drive over to the show--- For a moment we thought Cliff had shown up in his non-Datsun entry----a Duster! We thought sure it would win this coveted one of a kind trophy for it's meticulous attention to detail. Alas, it was not Cliff's entry but an Arkie cousin's prized piece of Detroit history. Jim S. explaining the transition of 240z to 280z to one of many respectful, very complimentary participants for the only 2 Japanese sports car entries at the event. We were totally surrounded by American ground pounding muscle and a century of Big Three production. A few more photos--- A 100 point '55 Ford Fairlane that was a big winner--- Suicide doors anyone?--- Early times--- Fast times--- "Too much time on my hands"--- Good times for sure Jim!!--- That's All Folks!
