The hardest part to find
Many, many thanks to Bryan and Jim for making this part of "unobtainium" obtainable. :classic: It is perfect in every way! I am very happy and will gladly tell anyone that asks of Mr. Martin's skill at reproduction parts. Nothing to hide here, just as close as it get's to "original". 240Z fuel pumps - How many different OEMs?
Hey Arne-- I wondered that also when I removed the cap and saw the lettering as I was packaging it to send it to you. Some background info. to help with the sorting of this latest Z puzzle: That Ampco cap (doesn't sound Japanese, does it? ) came from a very original, one owner, 48,700+ mile 1973 240Z that I recently purchased. Nothing was missing on this car and it had complete documentation of the mileage with service records. The car came with dual Webers installed, but included in a box were all the dreaded Hitachi flat top carb parts. Every nut, bolt, washer and hose is there. The previous owners wife was given the car as a gift when she graduated from college in '73. This car had the "disease" (common in the 73 model) and I was told by the PO that they replaced the flat top carbs with the Webers. The fuel pump was replaced as well. (part of the shotgun approach to the cure) It was in another box and the rest of the pump looks damn near new, so I am 99.9% certain that it is the original. If you want a Kyosan Denki cap I am sure that I have it on one of my parts cars over at my mechanic's yard. I don't know about the Nikki--but I'll have a look soon. Jim D. "Zup"

paint around the radiator support
Thanks Mike for the quick post of that link---it was exactly what I was looking for but couldn't find under a search for "radiator core support"---my search skills are not good I know! :stupid: I am pretty sure that the same treatment was given to the end of the frame rail horn on the outside side of the core support area, as well as the inner back edges of the door openings where the series of holes occurs as it goes down toward the inner rocker panels. The vinyl dogleg trim panels would cover this from view if they are in place. Anyway, thanks a bunch. I have taken Buttercup to an excellent shop and am doing the full repaint--the engine bay being done first. The previous paint shop's work just wasn't what I could live with-- so off with it. The color wasn't correct for a 919 Yellow. It was several shades too dark and wasn't properly prepped---sanding marks still visible on close inspection. I think this shop has it nailed as to the right shade of yellow and their prep work is very, very good. I'm excited!! Jim D. "Zup"

paint around the radiator support
Hey guys, Sorry I haven't stayed in touch much----work is trying to kill me. I do have a question for you though if you don't mind. Seems there was a discussion about keeping the blackend out portion of the radiator support. What I mean is--- during build (or a repaint) what was black instead of body color there, what kind of paint was used (flat black?), how do you think it was applied, and why was it done that way? Seems to me it is similar to the black applied around the door openings. Do you think it is the same? Anyone have any pictures of this they could post? The paint shop is finishing up the engine bay in preparation for the drive train, and brake, fuel line install. Any input regarding this aspect of how the engine bay was originally finished would be a great help. I'd like to get it right. TIA Jim D. "Zup"

Rae "the dean of automotive historians". One of my most cherished possessions, my copy includes a "Dear Fellow Employee" letter that is dated November of 1981, with the hand signature of Tetsuo Arakawa, President of Nissan Motor Corporation in U.S.A. It was not intended for me, but is a telling of the attitudes of Nissan U.S.A., and a great read of factual automotive history. Highly recommended. Jim D. "Zup"

nuts and bolts sources?
Hey David and all interested-- An excellent source for these engine bolts---exhaust studs, intake studs, water pump, thermostat, timing cover, fuel pump, etc. is Eiji Hosomi at www.datsunspirit.com I just ordered them from him at the suggestion by Zero Z on this site. There is a thread that was running about sourcing these fasteners and I'm sure you can dredge up as it is recent. The fasteners I received were bagged and tagged for where they go and are about 90% original nissan type with the proper plating grade and head type and include lockwashers and nuts. As a one stop place to get them I could not be happier. He even includes a new plated timing indicator plate! Eiji told me on the phone that he has several (many) of these bagged and tagged and ready to go for anyone that needs them. Eiji himself is a wonderful fella to talk to and a valued resource/source for us Z'ers. Ask here on the forum with anyone that has dealt with him and you will get the same answer. Highly recommended if you want no hassles or disapointments and the quality and pricing for them is very reasonable. Just to mention I think we should do business as often as possible with these individual Z part merchants that help keep our cars running. Without them "in business" we are in for a difficult time indeed in the coming years, as it is hard enough to find good sources now for correct reasonably priced replacement parts. Gauging interest in engine bolts
for 2 complete sets. Kudos to you for taking on something that is definately needed to counter the dreaded "Reddats" that are preying on the Z community. To them it is not about the cars----it is about the money. I too have been stung by his scheme of overpriced shipping and once bitten forever shy. Discover various "date",use cross-reference method
I can confirm this as well. The stamping is 0 5 on the door latches for my 7/70. Also noted that the clamshell striker on the jamb is stamped 0 5 Y located on the outside face down where the slider for the door dovetail covers it. I don't know what the Y designates, but it is an original yellow car. Coincidence?? On the side---do you guys cars have the small formed rubber cover still intact that cushions the leading latch knob as it hits the striker? Both of the latches on my car still have them---the drivers side is more worn and has a hole right where it contacts the striker. I managed to find one good one on the 10/70 parts car passenger side and figured out how to remove it in good condition. I will eventually replace the one on the drivers side of the 7/70 with it. I was also struck by the door dovetails on the 7/70. They are handed right and left. By this I mean the ramp or sloped portion of the dovetail is only on one side which makes it fit only the right or left door by the way it slopes. I compared it to dovetails from the 72 and 73 cars and they have dovetails that slope both ways from the center---making them interchangable from either side. I love these little points----stuff ya just don't see talked about much anywhere but here! :classic: Jim D. "Zup"

You are the BEST! I'm always amazed at the quality of your work and am blessed to have made your aquaintance. Very happy with the switches. I keep turning the knobs and pretending they are installed in the 7/70----weird---I know. I sometimes have reservations about what I have done/ or had done on the 7/70, but not Electrically thanks to you Dave. All my thanks! Jim D. Buying new carbs, Ztherapry or....
Got a new set of ZTherapy 3 screws installed onto my 73 DD Saturday. The ones I took off were ZTherapy rebuilds from 1998 (previous owner's work) They still looked nice but were leaking vacuum for sure---never could get the mix or the idle right. The new one's are like night and day! Really perked the old girl up----don't know if it'll help milage much but drivability and throttle response is definately there! :devious: I'm one very satisfied customer!! :laugh: Highly recommended!!! Maybe 26th-Z will post up here and give us some additional insights. 240 carpets -- What features are important to you?
I know what I want and what it looks like! Thanks Arne for posting the poll---it's sure to be helpful. I think finding the snap halves shouldn't be a problem and the underpadding will work itself out as well. Bryan (LBO370) PM'ed me today with encouraging news!! He has several carpet samples and thinks the serging of the cut-outs is no problem. He's working up a sample piece from the pattern I sent him, but he asked "Do you really think there is much demand?" Well crew? I trust Bryan's judgement explicitly. Pictures of the sample will be available as soon as it can be done I am sure, but in the meantime--- List interest. I'm in for 2 sets made to order. Let's get a tally going of who's up for this. Loop pile carpet, any recent purchases? (2008)
Don't think that my lack of posting has resulted from a lack of interest! Bryan has the sample, but it will take some time to get it together----patience is a virtue. I will let everyone know just as soon as possible. I purchased a set of new loop carpets from DAT240ZG (Bryan Holmberg) over the weekend that he purchased new from LES at CDM. Upon inspection, the best thing about it was that it was new and black. Anyone with a sewing machine that would handle heavy fabric could have done it. The carpet behind the seats is flat---doesn't even have the "gore" cut and resewn so that it fits the contour of the area it covers--so it just kinda bunches up ---absolutely NOT good enough. Not even rear notches for the straps! Floor sweep lint underpadding flimsily glued to the carpet. I am surprised that they cut a notch for the accelerator pedal! Good enough to freshen the DD '73, but a lame joke for the 7/70. I'm guessing here. but for those willing to wait and spend a little more for quality and attention to even basic details, we WILL come up with a set that will blow the socks off of what is currently available. Bryan Owens craftsmanship is proven. Quality carpet is not rare earth. The process isn't rocket science. X-RAY---let this jell a bit longer. I will send you patterns so you can source with your contacts as you wish, but it will take a little while, as I'm not retired! BPILATI---I appreciate all of your info. about the origins of the carpets. It has helped to make sense (?!?) of this perplexing problem. Thanks! ARNE---Your comments continue to bolster my arguement that we are REALLY in need of something better. If there are only 5000 or so Z'z left then it is up to us 240Z owners to get this done. We are the carriers of the flame---it is up to us to get it right---the people that are currently doing these carpets just haven't.
